Mohamed Elneny set to stay at Arsenal despite late interest from Galatasaray

The Egyptian midfielder is wanted by the Turkish side ahead of the September 8 deadline

Arsenal have knocked back an enquiry for Mohamed Elneny who looks set to stay at the club, football.london understands.

Elneny made 41 appearances for the Gunners last season as won the Arsenal Goal of the Season award for his strike against Dundalk in the Europa League group stages.

The 29-year-old was substituted after 33 minutes during Arsenal's behind-closed-doors friendly against Brentford on Thursday, although football.london understands the midfielder was taken off as a precaution after suffering a minor muscular injury.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a fan of Elneny having played with him during his time as a player at Emirates Stadium, but could allow the Egyptian to leave following his recent u-turn on Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Arteta and technical director Edu blocked Maitland-Niles from being loaned out to Everton on transfer deadline day, and the England international has been assured that he is considered an important player for the club going forward.

It's also expected that the 24-year-old will get game time in midfield this season, which will put Elneny further down the pecking order with Thomas Partey and Sambi Lokonga both ahead of him.

football.london understands that two Turkish clubs have expressed an interest in signing Elneny with Galatasaray contacting Arsenal this week.

That enquiry was rebuffed by Arsenal but it's understood the club would be open to letting him leave for the right price.

The transfer window in Turkey closes on Wednesday with fellow Arsenal players Cedric Soares and Sead Kolasinac both being linked with moves to the country in recent weeks.
