Samuel’s Bases-Clearing Walkoff Hit Gives Moberly An Improbable District Championship Win Over Boonville

Moberly was down to its last strike when Nolan Samuel delivered a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the 7th inning for a stunning come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Boonville that sends the Spartans to the state playoffs for the second year in a row. Here’s how it sounded Friday night from General Omar Bradley Field on nemopressbox.com…..

Brad Boyer with the call. Boonville added an insurance run in the top of the 7th to go up 3-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Cade Bohm fell behind 0-2, but came back to work a walk and Drew Smothers followed with a single. Max Richardson laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. After Kaden Abel struck out, Ashton Hunt fell behind 0-2, but also battled to work a walk to load the bases for Samuel, who was named our Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game.

Hunt led off the first inning with a hit and eventually stole home plate to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. That was it until the final at-bat. The Pirates got back-to-back extra base hits in the 2nd to tie the game and chased Moberly starter Cade Bohm in the 4th when two men reached. Mitchell Bruce relieved and issue a walk to load the bases, then got a strikeout for two away, before Chase Chamberlain delivered a hit to push Boonville on top 2-1. Kyler Fanning threw out a second runner trying to score. Fanning was later thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the 6th to keep the Pirates in the lead. Bruce issued a lead-off walk in the 7th and Max Richardson relieved. He gave up an RBI triple to Brody Porter to make it 3-1 Boonville.

Richardson ended up with the win. Porter went the distance and was the hard luck losing pitcher. He held Moberly to three hits until the 7th. The Pirates finish the season with a record of 18-10.

The Spartans win back-to-back district championships and will play Father Tolton for the second year in a row in the state sectionals on Tuesday. That game will be played in Moberly and we will broadcast it on nemopressbox.com. You can hear the broadcast by going to our Game Archive section.
