NUREMBERG, 1945. The eyes of a world desperate for truth, hope and justice turn to a courtroom where the leaders of the defeated Nazi regime sit in the dock. In this revelatory history, Natalie Livingstone sheds new light on the trial of the century, through the stories of extraordinary women whose importance has long been ignored.
Anti-fascist journalist Erika Mann - daughter of Germany's most famous writer - came to Nuremberg seeking a reckoning with a Germany she had fled more than a decade before, while Hungarian countess Ingeborg Kálnoky found herself presiding over a guest house in which perpetrators and survivors of the Nazi's worst crimes lived side by side. Russian interpreter Tatiana Stupnikova would be forced to confront terrifying revelations about her country's recent history, and German writer Ursula von Kardorff, reporting on the trials for domestic audiences, found herself torn between the evidence of the courtroom and a selective memory of her work for the Third Reich. Although she was barred from speaking in court on account of her gender, American lawyer Harriet Zetterberg assembled some of the most important prosecution cases, while British painter Laura Knight produced the most famous image of the courtroom. Rebecca West, the celebrated writer, arrived feeling lost and depleted and hoped the proceedings at Nuremberg might somehow shock her back to life. And Auschwitz survivor and French Resistance fighter Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier's defiant, devastating testimony laid the foundations for the world's awareness of the Holocaust.
Seen through the eyes of these astonishing women, the story of Nuremberg is a monumental human drama full of hope and romance, terror and conflict. It is the story of a search for truth among misinformation, love among ruins and light in overwhelming darkness. Eighty years after the trials, The Nuremberg Women offers a gripping new account of one of the defining events of the twentieth century.

This is a kaleidoscopic eight-life biography with electrifying stories. . . . And like a knife, it brilliantly slices through the machismo, violence and mass horror inflicted by men in the war, in the absence of female influence ― Independent
Natalie Livingstone's deeply researched, unfailingly fascinating book gives the many extraordinary women at or near the centre of the Nuremberg trials their proper, important, and often ignored place in history -- Salman Rushdie
If you think you know all about the Nuremberg trials, you don't; not until you have read Natalie Livingstone's enthralling book, that grave moment seen for the first time through the eyes of women who were very much there and whose stories have been waiting for a narrative as gripping and movingly perceptive as this one -- Simon Schama
A book that is as interesting as it is important. Beautifully written and immaculately researched, Livingstone transforms what we think and know about a terrible moment in history by focusing on a group of remarkable women, their incredible stories and why their example should inspire us all -- Peter Frankopan
A dramatic and compelling read - with her meticulous research and passionate storytelling, Natalie Livingstone paints eight talented and courageous women back into a picture from which they had been erased. The Nuremberg Women is a masterclass in the restoration of sidelined voices - it proves that yet again, the history we learned is only half the tale. Poignantly told and magnificently written, I found it absolutely unputdownable -- HALLIE RUBENHOLD, author of THE FIVE: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper
Perceptive, meticulous and full of humanity, The Nuremberg Women expands our understanding of a critical episode of 20th century history. By focusing on the women who were written out of the story for so long, this book allows us to see through fresh eyes the reality - and significance - of the Nuremberg trials, whose impact is felt to this very day. -- Jonathan Freedland, author of THE ESCAPE ARTIST
Brilliant . . . History erased these women. Natalie is righting that wrong. So fascinating, you've got to get this book in your life -- Chris Evans
Nurnberg as you've never imagined it or seen it portrayed - the story as revealed through the pivotal role played by eight remarkable women, of diverse nationalities and backgrounds, working at the coalface to bring the worst of the Nazi war criminals to justice. Beautifully and passionately written and wrought in riveting detail, The Nuremberg Women reveals the secret history behind the stories of the high profile men so often associated with the 'trial of the century', delivering a hugely timely corrective to the historical record. A book that I will return to again and again -- Damien Lewis, author of THE GREAT TRAIN RAID
Beyond powerful, this deeply researched and moving book is brilliant, unforgettable, vital history. This fascinating, searing book about these women throws open the door onto their essential work and is just gripping. Natalie Livingstone's important scholarship and perceptive, sensitive approach is quite simply revelatory. A landmark book, urgent history for our current age -- Kate Williams
Some of the twentieth century's most fascinating women - Rebecca West, Laura Knight, Erika Mann, Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier - congregated around its greatest reckoning: the Nuremberg trials. In this vivid, gripping and timely re-examination of the trials, Natalie Livingstone restores the women of Nuremberg to their rightful place at the moral and emotional heart of the story. Deeply researched, exquisitely told, Livingstone's account is as pacy as a thriller and as powerful as its rawest testimony: a coruscating portrayal of courage, creativity and resilience in the face of unprecedented horror -- Catherine Ostler, author of DUCHESS COUNTESS
What Livingstone contributes is an engaging and more rounded account of the context in which the trials took place, peopling the proceedings with some of their long-neglected and endlessly interesting female characters ― Literary Review
Untold stories of trailblazing lawyers, Holocaust survivors & writers who brought Nazis to justice ― Daily Mirror & Daily Express
Livingstone is skilful at building a rounded picture of the trials in the course of giving the reader a vivid sense of these women's experiences . . . A book like this, comprised essentially of separate stories, has the potential to seem fragmentary: it is to the author's credit that this is never the case. She works first through the women's involvement with the trials, then comes back around to each of them to reveal their lives in the aftermath. The result is a text that feels remarkably three-dimensional, as the reader gets a different vantage point both on the events in courtroom 600 and the postwar world -- Erica Wagner ― Observer

A Major Addition To The History The Nuremberg Trials
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 May 2026Whilst this book is firmly within the "Feminist Literature" category, it is properly objective, examining the negative aspects of the chosen women as well as the positives. The book falls into 2 parts : Firstly the participation of the women in the main and most famous of the Nuremberg Trials - the trial(s) of the leading Nazis selected for prosecution as a sample of the vastly more numerous possible individuals and attached government department etc - Secondly a brief but revealing biography of each of the women. Woven into the narrative is a critique of the shortfall in the process of the deNazification of West Germany in the following post-war period. Natalie Livingstone takes a comparatively low-key aspect of World War 2 history and presents it in such a way as to transform it into a fascinating, illuminating read. A must for all those interested in the history of World War 2, the book will also reward the more general reader. Brilliant

Impeccable. Exceptional. Eye Opening.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 April 2026I was totally gripped by this book. So much history and impeccably researched. It reads less like a dry historical text and more like a fast-paced thriller that captures the emotional toll and messy reality of the trials.
The Nuremberg Women is a vividly written, timely, and deeply moving restoration of forgotten voices. If you think you already know everything about Nuremberg, you don't, not until you've read this book. Highly recommended and nothing but exceptional!

A badly needed addition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 April 2026Natalie Livingstone's meticulously researched book makes its point very clearly and effectively. The voices, thoughts, reflections and experiences of women at the post-war Nuremberg Trials have been hugely ignored by a world that has preferred to hear men describe the crimes and inequities of men. Her depiction of the eight female subjects in this book add immensely to our understanding of the mid-20th century, illuminating the work previously done by the author, Gitta Sereny, who also attended Nuremberg and wrote with forensic psychological accuracy on Hitler's architect, Albert Speer, his battle with truth, as well as on the mentality of post-war and post-reunification Germans and Germany. My one remaining question for Natalie Livingstone is why she could not bring herself to mention Gitta Sereny and or at least make passing reference to this author's truly seminal work which paved the way for her own important contribution.
