𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮, an idea so powerful that we fight and die for it. We draw our maps around it; it shapes our politics, and forms the basis of our very core.

It's an idea so pervasive that we've probably never even stopped to notice how complex it is. Because here's the thing—𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄. And even though it might feel like it's been around forever, it's actually newer than you think.

It says that a country is more than just the land drawn into a set of borders. It's actually a giant community that is united by heritage and identity. It says that the people, the land, and the state are all one thing. That thing is called 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

You're not just a person who happens to live in a place called the United States; 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻.

Or Brazilian, or Nepali, or Mexican, or Egyptian, Nigerian, Dutch, Vietnamese, and so on.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀? Those who have left their home to build new in foreign? If an Indonesian migrated to Japan, would they become Japanese? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼? Is it their host, or their old motherland?

The concept of the nation, as powerful as it is, often struggles to accommodate the complexities of human mobility. It's a paradox: we are bound by our 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, yet we are increasingly 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀.

This tension is particularly acute for young people, especially those who are part of the East Asian diaspora in West Coast.

That's what 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 at the School of International Peace in San Francisco aimed to answer. This celebration—best described as a "contemporary festival"—gathers younglings who are looking for a self in the member of spheres they hailed from.
