Hamilton 03:09
I got locked out my apartment With no way to break inside Could I sleep upon your doorstep And wait for you to come outside? Find my way, find my way Find my way, find my way When you’d come out, you’d be livid Say “There’s no home for you here” But just to hear your soft inflection Would be home enough for me Find my way, find my way Find my way, find my way

Cashflow 04:15
Well they put you in charge and you thought we were all just subjects to be ruled Well they gave you a job and you said “Ain’t that cool!” 23 years on Earth, you ain’t nothing without your father 23 years on Earth, you ain’t nothing at all Call on the horsemen Call on the executioner Call on the harbinger of death Cause you’re in charge of the business, in charge of the people In charge of being in charge You’re in charge of the image, in charge of the cashflow, man Well they made you the boss and you thought it was just a title to be used To impress everyone who outdid you back in school You can flaunt it around, hang it proudly above your mantle Print out new business cards and hand them to everyone Call on your close friends Call on your co-conspirators Call on those money lenders, man Cause you’re in charge of the business, in charge of the people In charge of being in charge You’re in charge of the image, in charge of the cashflow, man Oh doesn’t your face look good in print! You are someone, you are someone Oh doesn’t your face look good in print! You are no someone, you are no one Call on the actors Call on the entertainers Call on the welcome wagon, man Cause you’re in charge of the business, in charge of the people In charge of being in charge You’re in charge of the image, in charge of the cashflow, man

In the burning nights where we found our other lives Party ‘til we make it alright In the burning nights where we found our other lives Vodka, cigarettes, and respite We are not your one trick ponies for the evening Hardly made it through the winter, we were barely breathing Now everything we wanted to say, we wrapped it up and threw it away Cause it ain’t the same when your soul ain’t worth keeping In the burning nights where we found our other lives Party ‘til we make it alright In the burning nights where we found our other lives Vodka, cigarettes, and respite We are not the ruination of tomorrow We’re just doing what we need to do to ease our sorrow And we could make a living like bank robbers and villains But we don’t wish the world no harm No, we just want to forget who we are In the burning nights where we found our other lives Party ‘til we make it alright In the burning nights where we found our other lives Vodka, cigarettes, and respite And all the boys and girls are filled with rum and Coke And all the boys and girls, they burn that midnight oil And all the boys and girls are filled with rum and Coke And all the boys and girls, they burn that midnight oil That midnight oil, that midnight oil In the burning nights where we found our other lives Party ‘til we make it alright In the burning nights where we found our other lives Vodka, cigarettes, and respite

All Used Up 03:38
There is nothing you could say that’ll take my breath away Imagination starts to fade, growing up got in the way There’s this cramping in my leg, it’s always sore around the bend Getting frail in my young age, oh my bones feel elderly And I’m all used up I am all used up Broken hearts and broke my back, always dodging heart attacks Almost drowned when I was 10, feels like it’s happening again Oh my lungs wasting good air, manufacturing despair When they take me to my grave, there’ll be nothing to bury But I’m all used up I am all used up Ration out these final days, every hour’s one to save Don’t take chances, don’t chase dreams, treat your neighbors humbly Every choice could move your feet, you should stop eating red meat Come on kid, don’t you give up, it’s not too late for ambition But I’m all used up I am all used up
5.
If you hate me, would you let me know? Don’t tell me that you’ll call, don’t tell me that you’ll pop in to say hello If you’re gonna cut that limb, do it fast, don’t do it slow Don’t leave me hanging on like an arm by the bone Don’t leave me bleeding out on that winter snow Making Rorschach patterns on the ground when the blood seeps through my clothes If you love me, would you let me go? Don’t throw me like a boomerang, then walk away and expect me to come home Don’t hit me like a tetherball with a schoolyard’s tired knock This is not a game I want to play, with this rope tied round my jaw So if you hit me one more time, I think I’m gonna pop O, my body was not built to sustain all these tired thoughts Don’t tell me that you’ll call Don’t tell me that you’ll call Don’t tell me that you’ll call then leaving me hanging on

Chemical Hug 05:43
Looked like you had your shit together But everyone said you were a nervous wreck I am too, but I have trouble hiding it So I guess that gives you plus one over me We choked on chlorine by the poolside And listed off the ways that we’ve been fucked By our loved ones and our bodies Well if you hate yours, I’ll offer you my own And I know your anxieties go deeper than they seem When you hugged me, I could feel them on my skin Tried to shake your bones into an early grave A solution to keep all the eyes at bay We fell asleep next to the glow Of a blinking light that was 15 years old Laying cautiously apart Like kids confused on matters of the heart Scared to mend a broken limb For fear we’d break our own and be helpless What a rampage we have lived! The ruined landscape of our bones and skin And I know your plans seem horribly complex So you dropped them to count numbers and break banks If we could escape, I’d take you cross that bridge To a place where we could ditch all those digits But life goes on
7.
I’m sorry but I must decline Your offer to go out tonight I promise that I’m feeling fine I just can’t take the thought of a good time And inside of my punk rock mind It gets so loud, I can not find A sound I recognize as mine The guitars rage like rats on fire You spoke of the medieval crimes Where men would die for wandering eyes They took it as a fatal sign Of impure hearts and selfish kinds Selfish kinds, selfish kinds And all I ever want is quiet and silence And all I ever want is quiet and silence You can break your heart by asking me if I would kill for love and peace But I am not a man of violence And in one small step, I am gone Watch me dissolve like pills dropped into water Feel the warm breeze blow, silent and pure Onto your knees, you old dog The ground is your home I’m sorry but I must decline Your offer to go out tonight I promise that I’m feeling fine I just can’t stand the sound And all I ever want is quiet and silence
8.
Well you showed up for work, and you showed up for birthdays And showed up when you were called And you showed up for weddings, and you showed up for wakes Yeah, you showed up everyone But do you ever get tired? Don’t you ever get tired? Yeah, you showed up for Christmas, and family dinners Every table a place for you Yeah, you showed up for parties every Saturday night Cause what else was there to do? But do you ever get tired? Don’t you ever get tired? Well you showed up for church every Sunday and prayed Underneath those ringing bells And you showed up for every single conversation You knew could not end well But do you ever get tired? Don’t you ever get tired? With the weight of the world on your spine How it weighs down your time

Architects 05:03
Got the floorplan from the architects, they told me to start building it You don’t need prior experience, just make it however you see fit These instructions have a precedence, but lack the proper resonance Still it’s easy to just follow them, flipping pages til the job is done Skipping stones down by the river’s edge, oh our childhoods were all drawn in When it comes to making decisions, there is safety in our indifference Oh the structure’s boxing in your dreams again! Close your eyes, don’t let it in! Oh the structure’s breaking at the seams again! Oh the structure’s getting thin!

Every road to nowhere has gotta have an end It’s gotta lead out to the ocean or loop backwards on itself And every great American highway has a story to be told Drive the car from West Virginia through the heart of Arkansas And every trucker in every rest stop is gonna ask you where you’re going You tell ‘em “I’ll let you know when I get there, cause brother, I don’t know anymore” And all the stories from your grandfather are filled with courage and resolve Are you gonna leave behind a trail of numbers or are you gonna follow his call?

North Star 03:02
Fade out to the depths of space Night sky, watching bright stars die Morse code in lights Morse code in lights Organ grinder’s got no home That man don’t know where to go Don’t know where to go Don’t know where to go North star shining all alone Don’t die, we’re so far from home We’re so far from home We’re so far from home

about

detuned guitars, mispronounced words, muddy mixes
a voice lost in digital noise as the audio levels turn red

there is a misconception that art requires perfection. when we hear a new album, one carefully produced and mixed in an expensive studio, it is often immaculate. not a note is out of place, not a voice out of key. even an album full of outtakes and abandoned songs gets meticulous mixing and mastering to make sure those songs won’t stick out when they land in a shuffling playlist. mistakes can only live on in blooper reels, a punchline to be laughed at once the real movie ends

maybe that’s why we live in a world that’s so intimidated by artistry. we too often are led to believe that the only worthwhile creative expressions are the ones that are so neatly wrapped up in intent, with any warts shaved off. digitally remove that starbucks cup from that scene! fix those awkward controls in your video game remaster! mask your limitations as a singer under auto tuning! there is a self-imposed pressure placed on the act of creation that makes the idea of putting a pencil to paper or picking up a guitar daunting. wouldn’t it just be easier to let a machine guide you around the potholes and get right to the perfection?

i have been writing music under the name duckspeak for two decades now. if you look that name up on a streaming service, you will likely only find a few studio produced albums with clean guitars, time corrected drums, and subtle adjustments to my voice. what you won’t find is 90% of my music. you will not find the music i made in my parent’s computer room as a kid, made with a cheap casio keyboard and a toy guitar that only had two perpetually detuned nylon strings. you won’t find my first albums, a series of college recordings filled with songs that teeter off time and melodies played in an entirely different key. you will barely see the evolution of my voice, the growth in my songwriting, me learning to play instruments in real time. but as much as i hide them away, i know that those ugly moments cannot be separated from my polished work. every mistake, every scrapped song, every experiment, is just as much an act of legitimate expression

bones & skin is not a collection of studio-produced songs that were rewritten and remixed across several rounds of notes. these are songs recorded on iphones and laptops between 2012 and 2022. some were written and recorded in a few hours, then exported just as fast and uploaded to soundcloud. some were hastily thrown together for cover compilations that friends in the nyc music scene used to make from time to time. some feature guitar parts that are painfully out of tune. i have long thought of so many of the songs included here as embarrassing bloopers that would only discredit me

now, in an age where artistic expression is being automated out by people who are so afraid to fail and learn and fail and learn, i feel compelled to proudly share these songs with the world. the first “side” is composed of original songs in various states of disrepair. (one of my personal favorites, chemical hug, is inarguably the worst production on it.) the second is all covers that found me deconstructing perfect songs to try and find the vulnerability underneath the studio sheen. one track is a shoegaze cover of steal my sunshine. idk

i do not expect you to listen to these songs over and over, or even like some of them at all. i am laying it all bare in hopes that it dispels a myth about the artistic process. this too is what it sounds like to try to make something. it’s playing some chords into an iphone. it’s missing a note on the piano and trying to make it sound like you did that on purpose on the fly. it’s confidently mispronouncing the word respite without giving it a second thought (oops)

i hope these songs grant anyone who needs it the confidence needed to fail and learn. do not forfeit your humanity in pursuit of perfection; every stumble is part of the journey
