Oxon Hill community remembers 'Desserts by Gerard' owner after his sudden passing

A community is in mourning Wednesday after the owner of a well-known Oxon Hill bakery died unexpectedly following medical complications.

Pastry chef Gerard Huet, who owned and operated a pastry shop alongside his family for 33 years, reportedly died due to complications from a recent open-heart surgery, according to a statement from his family on the business' website.

"Our families are hurting and grieving with you all. Gerard will be a huge loss to us and the community," The family said in a statement.

All morning, people were seen leaving flowers, and balloons in front of the closed store, with letters offering condolences and kind words taped on the door.

"I will miss you, dear friend. Thank you for all your teachings and good advice," one person wrote. "I will always remember you. Rest in peace, my great friend."

Many also took to social media to remember Huet and the bakery.
