In medical diagnosis, we are often advised, "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras." It is an appeal to consider the common causes of medical problems before the rare ones. However, what constitutes common is often elusive. Even in trusted medical resources, the estimated prevalence of symptoms and disease are hard to come by. Likelihood ratios for clinical findings are hard to use even when available. These are real barriers to the practice of evidence-based medicine--the reason we still rely on heuristics to make clinical judgments.Yet, the data available to make these estimates are growing. This tool aims to put that data into your hands. We have aggregated hundreds of thousands of anonymized patient records to estimate the prevalence of over 800 diseases and calculate likelihood ratios for over 500 symptoms.Please consider this a reference and not a comprehensive checklist. We will be adding to the data set over time, but in no way expect this to be a replacement for your judgment. Please also note that this is a beta version of the tool intended primarily for demonstration purposes.Web version available at http://symcat.com.
