Unravelling Threads
How Instagram's Twitter Rival is Tangling Up the Book Community
Hey page turners, we’re gathered here today for me to complain ⚔️🌶️
Cast your minds back to the launch of Threads. The first 72-ish hours where it felt like we were all in a massive bookish community group chat. The vibes were immaculate, people were kind, we were all excited to become Thriends.
And now…
Disrespectfully, BookThreads feels like a dumpster fire more than not to the point where I’ve turned off notifications and removed the app from my Lock Screen to limit my use of Threads because it just… annoys me.
I could set a limit in my settings for a time limit on the app as I know some people find external influences helpful; I do not, I do what I want as you’ll learn about me, lol.
I don’t know about every one else, but it feels like there is some kind of discourse on Threads every other day
should you get a kindle coloursoft? kobo? boox? iPad?
are ARC readers employees?
authors behaving badly
you can’t read that many books
you’re not reading enough books
you shouldn’t buy that many books
support authors!
use the library!
don’t use the library, authors deserve to get paid (??)
don’t do *this*
you can’t do *that*
*author* copied SJM because *insert something stupid here*
*this genre* is better than *that genre*
dark romance readers are a plague unleashed on the community
*trope / phrase* is an original thought grown and nurtured by *author*; no one else can use it because that’s plagiarism
*user* can’t read diversely because of *insert something else stupid here*
blah blah blah
It’s infuriating and I think so many of us are exhausted going in circles again and again on the same topics.
Do I think some issues need to be brought to the attention of the online bookish community? Yes, of course I do, and Threads is inherently a good platform for that.
Yes, authors, readers and bookish apps / stores should be called out for their prejudice and micro-aggressions. Yes, authors should be called out if their ARC (etc.) requirements break FTC (or equivalent) guidelines. But not everything needs to be some kind of discourse that we’ve had 100 times over.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but having a platform where authors and readers have more direct contact with each other than on Instagram itself is clearly not the sunshine and rainbows we thought it was going to be.
The same way readers shouldn’t be mentioning authors in their negative reviews, scrolling through Threads and seeing authors continuously vent and complain about their readers or what readers are doing or their 1⭐️ reviews gets old and I don’t hesitate to use the block button. I see so many takes from authors AND readers and immediately think: mmmmmm, this should have gone to the group chat 😬.
I’m autistic (who would’ve thought?) and I have a thing against repetition. If I’ve seen something, I’ve acknowledged and retained it if I wish to or made a note of it somewhere in my ✨system✨. Threads is just repetition for me. The same stupid hot takes again and again and again and for some reason, lots of people act like each one is the first ever mention.
Threads should be called Knots (and not the fun kind 🌡️) because it continuously feels like people do not think before they post and if they did, I’m sure Threads would be the sunshine and rainbows we want it to be in this community because it genuinely has so much potential if people were kinder, got over themselves and let people live.
Fingers crossed BookThreads becomes the community we all deserve in 2025 🤞🏾Happy Threading (?) ☀️🌈

If you don’t already, highly recommend Lady Whistlethreads on here! I’ve stopped keeping up with bookish drama on threads and just read her digest every week 😅
I've been wondering if bookish Threads could be a good place for me... Thanks for your perspective!
