How to fix a broken facebook connection to iGive

I am getting an error when trying to connect iGive to my Facebook account. What should I do?

It can happen from time to time that the connection between iGive and Facebook gets broken. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as changes in Facebook’s settings or policies. If you are experiencing this issue, you can try the following steps to reset the connection between iGive and Facebook.

Disconnect iGive from Facebook

First, make sure you are logged into your Facebook account.

Then, visit the following the link to see a list of apps and websites that you have connected to your Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=business_tools

Look for “iGive” in the list of apps and websites, and click on the “Remove” button next to it. This will disconnect iGive from your Facebook account.

Reconnect iGive to Facebook

Next, visit the iGive website and log into your account.

Go to the “Cause” page by clicking “Cause” in the navigation at the top of the page, and then click on the “Connect Facebook” link. Or you can use this url directly once you are logged in to iGive: https://www.igive.com/causetoolbox/html/facebookoptions.cfm?a=gs.

This will prompt you to log into your Facebook account and grant iGive permission to access your Facebook data.

Follow the steps on Facebook to grant iGive permission, and you should be all set. At the end of the process you will be redirected back to iGive where you will find additional settings about the connection. Adjusting these settings is optional.

iGive supports local communities through the tools we develop. Whether you represent a high school marching band, local animal shelter, theater troupe, breast cancer research organization, or a community food bank — you can fundraise using iGive.

My cause isn’t listed

If you can’t find your cause, it’s easy to add your group to iGive. If you have a 501(c)3 designation from the IRS, please get in touch with our team to learn more about getting started with iGive.

If you are a community group that doesn’t have tax exempt status… or maybe doesn’t even have a bank account, that’s no problem! Register your group by clicking here.

How much money will my cause receive? How soon will we receive the money?

Retailers distribute funds typically within 90 days, which accounts for their return window. If someone returns an item and receives a refund (even if it is a store credit), no donation is processed. Once iGive receives the funds from retailers, we process checks to causes on a monthly basis.

iGive 101 - Shopping to Support Your Cause

How do I shop to support my cause?

First, you’ll need to start your shopping by visiting iGive.com or by having the browser extension installed. Otherwise, retailers won’t know that you want to support your cause with iGive.

If you start shopping directly on a retailer, and have not completed your purchase, you can always leave the retailer’s site, visit iGive.com, and click back to the retailer’s site. In most cases your cart will still have your items in it, and you’ll then be shopping to support your cause.

Where can I shop?

iGive partners with thousands of stores and we’re constantly adding new stores. See the full list of participating stores.

The best way to shop to support your cause is with the iGive browser extension, because you don’t have to keep track of which stores participate. Instead, as you are shopping normally, we’ll remind you to “activate” iGive automatically on participating sites.

If I’m shopping at a participating retailer, what will my cause receive?

Each retailer sets their own percentage of your transaction that they will set aside, on your behalf, for the cause of your choice. We list the current percentage on the store page.

The percentage is then taken from your subtotal after any discounts, and before any sales tax, shipping and handling, or other fees.

Additionally, some retailers set restrictions and exclude certain items from being eligible. For example, it’s common to see items like Gift Cards be excluded. You can find a full list of excluded items/categories when looking at participating stores.

Here is an example receipt to show how to determine what would be donated to your cause:

In this example, $7.00 is the amount eligible and the retailer’s percentage would be applied to that to calculate your donation to the cause.

From the $39.35 total: The $3 toothbrush is already discounted to $2. $25 is removed because it’s an excluded items per the retailer’s restrictions. $6.00 is removed because shipping and other fees are excluded. $1.35 is removed because taxes are excluded.

Can I also use coupon finders, cash back apps, etc?

Generally, no. If you use another site to receive cash back, airline/hotel points, or some other form of reward for shopping at a store, you’ll have to decide whether to use that site or iGive to support your cause for a particular shopping transaction.

How can I tell how much I raised for my cause?

Once you make an eligible purchase, your pending donation will be listed in your iGive account (requires login) typically within two weeks. Some retailers make take additional time to report your purchase back to iGive.

Once the return window for your purchase has closed, typically less than 90 days after your purchase, we’ll send your donation to your cause. The exact timing of when the cause receives your donation may vary based on the cause’s preferences and our agreements with them. For example, if a cause elects to receive a check, your donation may be bundled with other iGive users into a single monthly check.

What if I forgot to start shopping at iGive? Can my previous purchases be eligible for donations?

Unfortunately, you must shop via iGive for the retailer to know that you want to donate to your cause. It’s not possible to retroactively enable iGive on past purchases.

We recommend you utilize the iGive browser extension to make it easy to shop to support your cause every time.

iGive is also not active if you complete your order over the phone or in person, even if you started shopping at iGive.com.

iGive 101 - How to Choose a Cause

iGive helps you give to the cause of your choice. Any worthy cause close to your heart or home. That means your kid’s marching band, a local animal shelter, a theater troupe, breast cancer research, or a community food bank.

You can choose to change your cause as frequently as you’d like, but you can only support one cause per shopping transaction. If you change your cause, that cause will receive the benefit of your next eligible purchase online.

My cause isn’t listed

If you can’t find your cause, let us know! We’ll be happy to add the cause on your behalf. (Causes do not have to have IRS tax-exempt status to be listed on iGive, so your school’s PTA, or other similar organization is likely eligible.)

How much money will my cause receive? How soon will they receive the money?

When you make an eligible purchase at a participating retailer, a percentage of your subtotal (excluding sales tax, shipping & handling, or other fees) will be provided by the retailer to iGive. After a 90-day waiting period (required by retailers in case you return any portion of your purchase), iGive will send the donation, on your behalf, to the cause.

How iGive Works

When you shop through iGive, a portion of your purchase is donated to your chosen cause. This process involves multiple steps and several partners, including online retailers and data processing systems. Here’s a detailed look at how your shopping data is handled:

The Data Journey

Making a Purchase: When you click on an iGive link and make a purchase at one of our partner stores, the store records this transaction. The store then tags this purchase with a unique identifier that links it back to iGive.

Data Transmission: After your purchase, the retailer collects and processes the transaction data. This includes details such as the date of purchase and the amount of the donation. The retailer then transmits this data to iGive, usually in batches. This transmission can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the store’s reporting schedule.

Data Validation: Once iGive receives the data from the retailer, we validate it to ensure accuracy. This involves checking the transaction details against our records to confirm that the purchase was made through an iGive link and that the correct donation amount is attributed to your chosen cause.

Processing and Reporting: After validation, the data is processed and added to your account. This includes updating your total contributions and generating reports that show your impact. This step may also involve reconciling any discrepancies and verifying that the correct amount is credited.

Returns and Reversals: It’s important to note that if you return a purchase, the associated donation will also be reversed. This is because the donation is a percentage of the purchase price, so if the purchase is cancelled or refunded, there is no longer a basis for that donation. If you notice a decrease in your total contributions, it could be due to a returned purchase.

Retailer Reporting Schedules: Each retailer has its own schedule for transmitting data to iGive. Some send data daily, while others may do so weekly or monthly. This variability can affect how quickly your donation appears in your account.

Batch Processing: Retailers often process transactions in batches rather than individually. This means that even if you make a purchase today, it may not be transmitted to iGive until the next scheduled batch.

Data Validation and Reconciliation: Ensuring the accuracy of your data is crucial. This validation process can take time, especially if there are discrepancies or if additional verification is needed.

When you see this on a site, you simply have to click “Activate x% Donation” and start shopping. If you don’t click activate, your purchase will not generate a donation to your cause. Activating allows iGive to notify the retailer ahead of time that you’d like them to set aside a portion of their revenue to be donated to your cause.
