Get an AI Overview in Gmail search

Important: This feature is gradually rolling out to Gmail and may not be available to you yet.

In the Gmail search bar, you can ask natural language questions or key phrases to quickly find information within your inbox, such as "When is my flight to Hawaii?" or "Find the latest Cymbal Team Meeting notes." Based on your emails, Gmail then generates an AI Overview that can:

  • Give you the key fact or summarize information directly above your search results.
  • Synthesize information scattered across multiple emails to provide a complete answer.
  • Save you time, so you don't have to open and read through individual messages.

What you need

Important: This feature is only available in the US and in English.

  • For personal Google Accounts: You need one of these eligible Google AI plans:
  • For work or school accounts: You need an eligible Google Workspace plan with access to Gemini Alpha.

Learn how AI Overview in Gmail search answers your questions

  • When you search, Gmail first finds the most relevant emails. An AI Overview is then generated using the information from those emails to provide a direct summary or answer to your question. It leverages your email content to save you time, and eliminates the need to review individual messages.
  • To send feedback about an AI Overview, select Good suggestion or Bad suggestion next to the overview.
  • Your emails are protected by the same security and privacy commitments as the rest of Gmail. To control the use of your data for this and other AI-powered features, update your Google Workspace smart feature settings.
