FAQ changes: August through November

Apologies for being so late with the August changes, and not getting anything else done until the end of October.

* FAQ #14 - Tango and I attempted to better explain what scripting was allowed in entries and what wasn't allowed.
* FAQ #375 - Explains the Popular Entries section of the homepage.
* FAQ #105 - Carrie re-wrote the introductory Abuse FAQ to be more accessible.
* FAQ #379 - The Russian FAQs haven't been changed to reflect our merging of OpenID and other identity account FAQs. When we un-hid FAQ #318 so that Russian Support could continue to use it, something happened to make the entire FAQ disappear. It was then re-created as FAQ #379. For the time being, we're going to have to live with two FAQs with near-identical titles in the FAQ listing.
* FAQ #232 - Rewritten to more generically refer to identity accounts.
* FAQ #231 - Changed from "OpenID commenting" to "Commenting without an LJ account". Explicitly includes information about anonymous commenting.
* FAQ #75 - Information about LJ spoiler added. Now needs to have cut expansion added.
* FAQ #283 - Clarified how to find the ext_number for an identity account.
* FAQ #184 - Removed information about auto-transcription and Ogg Vorbis.

And the big change:
* FAQ #395 - A new FAQ that's meant to act as an introduction and guide to all the specific spam FAQs.

Also, I created an example entry with all of the Like buttons (except give and repost). If you don't mind, clicking on one or two of those buttons would help illustrate how they work when I get to that FAQ later this week.

I don't think I could sum up all the ways in which Support has affected my life, so I'm not going to try. Instead, I'll blow some rust off an old habit and leave you all with a song.

I've read a few of these types of entries over the years, but for some reason I never really thought much about when my time would come, and what I would say to you all when it did. So I'm just going to say it: I'm leaving Support.

This entry is the final destination in a wonderful journey for me. Just over three years ago, I proudly received my first support privs, along with a veritable deluge of Blinkie and Snowflake Cookie v-gifts. Soon I was earning points and sharing my joy with all of you :)

I never really specialised much at that stage, and quickly earned more privs across most categories. Six months later, intrepia blew me away with my first SH, in Entries, a category that has been dear to me ever since. Just a few months later, intrepia invited senza and me to join her in adminning the category.

Entries was a bit of a problem cat at the time, but the three of us cut a swathe through the green, kicking bugs and taking names. We even zeroed out the cat a couple of times! In the process, I earned still more points - it seems I hadn't lost my love for non-round numbers along the way! And of course, by this time I was the one handing out the privs to my fellow volunteers. It seems like it took both a long time and no time at all for me to come full circle.

Volunteering in Support has been hugely positive for me. I've learned any amount of useful technical information, honed my writing and teaching skills, and boosted my confidence. But the most precious treasure I'll take away with me is the wonderful friendships I've found here. Those alone would have made this time worthwhile - and without them, nothing could have. You all rock ♥ Even though I'm in New Zealand, far away from most of you in person and in timezone, the community that we sustained through IRC and LiveJournal communities made me feel every bit as close to you as anyone I know in my offline world. Be strong, rock on :)

Bah! I've tried to write this a gazillion times and it ended up sounding so sappy. So I'll be short and to the point! Life demands I quit LiveJournal Support. I loved it, wish I could continue, but it's not possible. I want to thank a ton of people, but I'm afraid I'll forget half of them. So thanks to everyone that has helped me out in any way or form. And most importantly, many thanks to all those awesome friends I now have out there, thanks to Support.

This must be the shortest goodbye message ever, but I don't want to become all sentimental. So bye and thanks for all the good times, spr0t. I shall certainly miss you. Take care of my canoe, please!

* FAQ #98 - Better explains userpic image restrictions and specifically calls out animated GIF errors.
* FAQ #313 - Explains both new and old-style reposting, gives examples. Still waiting to hear about better or alternative names.
* FAQ #186 - Explains differences between different site schemes, links to screenshots and previews.
* FAQ #50 - Rewritten to cover both wanting to hide from and promote to external search engines. Explains how different settings affect search engine findability.
* FAQ #301 - Re-organized features to follow same order as in hover menu, included screenshots.
* FAQ #283 - Rewritten to apply to all identity accounts.
* FAQ #318 - Merged into #283 and hidden.
* FAQ #314 - Rewritten for all identity accounts.
* FAQ #160 - Updated for current supported browsers.

Changes to reposting FAQ

FAQ #313 has been updated to address both styles of reposting. For the time being we're calling them new-style and original-style reposting until better names have been determined. The FAQ includes links to a couple of example entries in exampleusername so users can see what the feature looks like for real.

FAQ updates, 372 and 286

FAQ 372 has been added for community email. It's roughly translated from the Russian.

FAQ 286 (What are Cyrillic Services?) has been updated into a new format. Not only does it tell you how to join Cyrillic services, but it lists some of the major features and differences, in descending order of their usefulness to the non-Russian audience.

I want to take this format into other categories as well, to act as a short introduction or primer before sending newbies off into the meatier FAQs. There's still a lot of pending changes to get through, but after that I'd like to do another primer FAQ for either comments or userpics (or possibly on how to deal with spam and spammers.)

Changes to FAQs #262 and #288

FAQs 262 and 288 have been updated. The major change to 262 was the table-ization of the who sees what section, along with some minor shuffling of the other information. In 288 I moved the link to the downgrade page up to the top of the FAQ, cleaned up the list of feature changes, and separated and clarified what would affect communities and what only affected personal journals. As always, input on the changes is welcomed and appreciated.

Edit: Added the effect of a paid account on advertising to 131.

I had dabbled in Support, off and on, as early as 2003 (for the invite codes, y'all), but five years ago today I committed myself to trying it again, fully and well. I even read the Support Guide! It was during a period of great upheaval for me, and in Support, I found the sense of confidence, accomplishment, and belonging that was sorely missing from the rest of my life. I will never forget the warmth, kindness, and generosity with which all of you welcomed me into this community -- this family. Seven months later, I was an Entries admin.

Today, I am stepping down. It's been a long time since I've kept that old commitment, of doing this fully and well, and it is time for me to own the truth that my time here has run its course. But I want you to know that I have never lost the respect, affection, and love I have for LiveJournal Support and for those of you who keep it going. And if anyone reading this thinks you may like to give this thing a chance, I believe that it can and will change your life for the better, if you let it.

Five years ago, when I started this journey, I never imagined that it would take me across the country three times; that I would be able to meet friends when I traveled to Florida, DC, and Chicago; that as far away as Greece and Australia were people who I would someday hold dear; that there would be imagined worlds called Tyria and Ur in which I would make real memories. And there is no way, really, to sum up what this experience has been for me or what it has meant for me. I was privileged enough to lead two categories, Entries and ScrapBook, to work alongside some of the best people anywhere as co-admins (legomymalfoy, constantia, and norinel; mayerman and daydreamer; tinyjo and elyssa; and senza and trixieleitz) and as a manager (coffeechica, who advocates fiercely and tirelessly for all of us). I started a campaign against the Rich Text Editor. I wrote two found language poems using material from Support requests. I added stock answers until stock answers became cool. One year, mayerman came to my apartment on his birthday, and I gave him a hot pink boa to match this photoshopped one.

I still remember the first time I realized that I could be online and affect, even orchestrate, the goings-on at a meetup hundreds of miles away. And probably nothing again will ever quite resemble spending two days writing a choose-your-own-adventure story with right; or coordinating more than a dozen people in a game of IRC Werewolf; or that one time I was really tipsy and IRC talked me into posting a profanity-laden limerick in privchange. Oops?

Sometimes you meet a moment when you know that what you've done has brought you to a place in life where you were meant to be. Support has given me that moment again and again. I experienced it while braving the crushing crowds of Barack Obama's historic inauguration with boredinsomniac by my side; and again when marta gathered together a crowd of admins and Abuse Prevention Team members in the backyard of a Las Vegas mansion, turned to me, and handed me a cthulpus tshirt I'd forgotten helping to design; and again when I moved through my small town life carrying the secret loveliness of coffeechica's fading henna patterns on my palms; and again when I paused with hammond and the_kitty_kat and my boyfriend and two other cars of people among the otherworldly red hills of the Valley of Fire to watch and wait while a desert tortoise crossed the road.

Those of you who read my LJ know that I've been on a fitness journey for the last ten months. Growing up, I was always that overweight, unathletic kid in gym class, lagging far behind the pack, barely able to walk the five laps around the track during our annual mile run. Last Thanksgiving, I ran a mile for the first time in my life, and last month, I ran my first 5k. This week, I signed up for my first 10k, in the fall, and I plan to spend part of my summer training for it and daydreaming of even longer races, for now confined to Someday. I say all of this to let you know that while my run in LJ Support is at an end, another one has begun for me.

And I know it goes without saying, but Support, you and I, we will never be strangers.

So do you want to help out fellow LiveJournal users? It's easy to do so and we want to help you get started! The basics are explained here. Once you have had a look in there, just go ahead and try answering some requests.

If you want to improve in Support, there are a few ways to ask for help. First one is reviews, explained here. If you don't want to post there for whichever reason, you can always reach us by sending
an email at support@livejournal.com or joining us in IRC (info here).

We are a bunch of different people that enjoy helping others and we certainly love new additions to the team. So don't hesitate! Get started and ask for help any time you need it. We're looking forward to meeting you!

Heads-up re: Gmail message display change

Hi, folks

Just wanted to let you know of something I just noticed on my Gmail account that may result in the occasional request. Gmail has always hidden duplicate content behind a link, but since they changed their web interface, this link is now represented by a rather inconspicuous icon. Some of the content hidden by this link includes the links that LiveJournal inserts at the end of every comment notification email.

So, if you see any requests where both these conditions apply:

the user thinks that these links are missing from the notification message AND
their email account is with Gmail

please suggest that they look for this icon (arrow added by me):

On mouseover, it highlights and there is a tooltip:

CSRF/Phishing attack

There is currently a CSRF designed to mislead you into believing LiveJournal is requesting your username and password, when the data is actually being requested by a third party who is trying to gain access to your account.

The attack will appear as though someone has left you a comment, but an image similar to the following will appear requesting your password:

The domain used, liv i ejournal.com, is not livejournal.com, and you should not enter your password into any popup like this which appears. The domain used by the attacker could change at any time.

If you have entered your username and password into any popup like this, you should immediately change your password at https://www.livejournal.com/changepassword.bml.

If any content has been deleted from your journal by someone other than you, please submit an abuse request.

I've been drafting this post for over a month now because I've long known that it is inevitable. I've had a fantastic run over the past six years, but unfortunately it's time for me to step down. I'm entering a new and exciting chapter in my life which will significantly affect the amount of free time I have to dedicate to being a support administrator.

As such, I'm resigning as admin and asking for all of my support privileges to be removed. I appreciate all of the opportunities LiveJournal has given me, but even more than that I love each and every one of you. You are all great people for a number of reasons: you're thoughtful, caring, intelligent, and you don't use Comic Sans font for anything. Sometimes the simplest things go a long way.

I couldn't possibly name everyone in support who has influenced me, so I'll take a moment to give a couple of shout-outs: first to dawna and dalryaug for being the greatest co-admins a person could ask for, second to amanda, prissi and christine for guiding me through support in their respective categories and serving as models for me to emulate as an admin, and finally to everyone I've ever interacted with in support: thank you for everything. And of course, intrepia, who motivated me, kept me active, and most of all remained a steadfast friend. It's been a fantastic ride. I couldn't possibly have mentioned everyone here because there have been so many great people pass through support.

Don't be a stranger. Friend me if you want; Facebook me if you know my info. I'll still be around on IRC!

I don't know how to end this post except with a line from a beloved piece of poetry, a line that transcends generational gaps whose meaning has taken on a number of interpretations within the context of professional critics, pop culture gurus and casual observers alike. But most of all, the meaning is personal, and I hope that through the coming years it provides you with the guidance it has provided me:

I'm never gonna give you up.

Let's rip the band-aid right off. I'm leaving LiveJournal Support.

After taking a few weeks off to travel to the States and meet a spate of absolutely amazing people, and hang out with the majority of them in a giant house in Las Vegas, I was so enthused to come back home and help to carve out a whole new era of Support.

Unfortunately, I returned to a long term relationship that was collapsing on itself followed almost immediately by my dream position opening up in Melbourne out of nowhere, which I have been busy running around applying for. On top of that, my schedule has been absolutely full for a long time. Case in point: my privs were actually removed last week but it's taken me a week to have time to sit down to write this (let's not talk about how far behind I am on my friends page).

I am really sorry to be leaving at a time of so much upheaval and change. As I mentioned, I would love to have been able to stick around to help usher in 2011 Support. Let me just say that there is absolutely no bitterness in my leaving at this time. If I could afford the time, I would be staying.

Anyway, I know better than anyone that real life has to come before Support volunteering. I love all of you most of all about my time volunteering. I've met the most wonderful people through my years of volunteering and the saddest part is most of you live inside my computer.

Support improves lives, and it has most definitely enriched mine. Thank you all for the fantastic journey. <3

A milestone and a change.

So all admins get a first post to lj_support as a free post to pretty much say whatever they want, an introduction if they want, anything really.. Well, I've never once posted to lj_support believe it or not, so this is really my first post. And like a few before me, I am using my first post to step down as an Admin. I picked today because its the 10th anniversary of my journal. I created it 10 years ago today, and its only fitting that I use today to make this post.

Support has been the center of my world since it came into my life 6.5 years ago, and I have made so many friends that I will always cherish through it. And in my time as an Admin, I've learned so much about myself, gained confidence in myself to do things I never thought I could do, and picked up skills that will be very valuable to me in the future. Its been such an enriching experience and I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to do this, and for so long.

There are so many people that I want to thank, though if I started listing them all individually I'd be here all day. I want to thank all the volunteers I have worked with along the way had touched me and helped me more than they could ever know. You all have enriched my life in so many ways. To the staff, past and present, thank you for putting up with me, and for helping me, and for just being awesome. To the Admins, you all have been amazing and I am so lucky to have been able to work with you in the 5 years that I have been an Admin. And lastly, to the Comms Admins, thank you for everything, I could not have done this without you guys.. take care of my baby please.

I'd like to say that I am leaving the team on good terms, this has nothing to do with anything other than personal reasons in my life not related to support. I will be staying on in Comms as a Supporthelp, so I am not leaving support entirely for now. I haven't completely made that decision yet. So you'll still see me poking around the boards from time to time. :)

Moving along...

2 years, 6 months, and 12 days ago, I became an admin for syn. I have been volunteering in support off and on since mid-2003 (yes, really - see my first approved answer).

In that time, I have been truly blessed to know the volunteers and people that make LiveJournal what it is. This goes for everyone from the screenies to staff -- I've never met a group of people who are more passionate, more fun, or more giving of themselves. I started to make a list here of people who I personally wanted to thank, but it got to be three paragraphs, so I'll just say that I want to thank everyone who reviewed, mentored, vented at/with, or otherwise interacted with me in support. I have never had co-workers so awesome.

Because of this, the decision to end my time in public support was a hard decision to make. However, I think that after 8 years (to the day!) from my first approved answer, it was due. Effective immediately, I'll no longer be the admin of syn, and I'm also requesting all my other support-related privs be removed. I'll no longer be in #lj_support, so that I can get the clean break I need from it.

I will remain on the Abuse ~~Facilitation~~Prevention Team, but my time in public support is over. I want to personally thank everyone who has helped me create lasting, meaningful friendships, and to remind all of you about what a great thing you have here. LiveJournal is an extremely powerful force for bringing people together, and I know that I have personally benefitted in immeasurable ways from it. My (real-world) life has changed in so many ways because of LiveJournal, and a simple post does not do it justice.

I feel lucky to have been able to make so many great friends while helping our users. To make sure our users are taken care of, I feel obliged to say: If you need something related to syn-adminning, please email support@. If you've read this far, take 500 FunBux™, you've earned them.

Devs have been alerted to the problem that just cropped up regarding Friends page 'read comments | xx comments' style links -- many such links are currently linking to the "?mode=reply" version of the entry (to leave a comment) rather than to the entry itself (to view comments).

Status page and BBB have been updated, Twitter/Facebook will be updated soon, and a fix will likely be out by tomorrow morning.

I need a little help from people who regularly use the 'view journals only' - 'view communities only' options for filtering your friends page and who ALSO have a Default View custom group defined. If that's you, please read on.

As you may now, release 79 accidentally removed those options from the new navstrip -- they've now been restored.

But we've gotten a report that they aren't working like they did 'before' (prior to 79), but I never use them so I can't verify previous functionality myself.

The question is this -- prior to release 79, did clicking the 'view journals/comms only' link on the navstrip show you:

1) ALL personal journals or ALL communities you had friended, *regardless* of whether they were in your default view?

2) Or did it show you only 'all journals' or 'all comms' only *within* your default view?

For example, assume you have Biff, Henrietta, Boris, and Wanda friended, all personal journals. You also have Gerbil_comm and Kumquat_comm that you're watching, both communities.

In your Default View, you only have Biff in there from the personal journals, and only Kumquat_comm for the communities.

So you load your friends page, which means you get your default view, so you only see stuff from Biff (the personal journal) and Kumquat_comm (the community). You then click to show only personal journals from the navstrip.

Prior to release 79, would have have seen at this point:

1) Only Biff? (because he's the only personal journal in your already-filtered, DV-only friends page)

2) Or do you see Biff, Henrietta, Boris, and Wanda? (all the personal journals you have friended, period -- regardless of them being in the DV).

Same question would apply for the communities only filter. Did you see only Kumquat_comm, the one in you default view, or would you now see gerbil_comm as well?

Again, I need to know how it functioned *before* 79. Testing now will show that it's working only within the Default View (only seeing Biff, to put it in the example terms). I need to know if it previously did that, or if it previously showed you everyone.

Two weeks of Paid Account time was extended to all users with a Paid account between March 30 to April 12; another update on the DDoS attacks was posted. Suspected spam comments are now hidden from entries and must be accessed on a separate page. Community URLs were shortened. The ability to receive text messages was restored. Community maintainers can now minimize the inclusion of their community's entries and comments in external search engines. The text string 'rel=nofollow' is now added to URLs for entries and comments posted from Plus and Basic accounts. (link)
