Icon Tutorial

Translatable: Has one selective coloring layer and a Color Balance layer, so no, not really.
Steps: 9
Difficulty: Medium

This is a tutorial for a specific icon, but it can really be applied to all dark caps. Enjoy! (and please don't copy exactly!)

1) Start off with your base. Here, I used a cap from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The base is pretty bad - it's in the shadows and there's not a lot of color. I scaled it down (while holding the SHIFT key) and moved it to the top 2/3 of the icon.

2) Duplicate your base and set it to SCREEN at 100%. Now, if your base has very bright areas, you may have to reduce the opacity of the duplicated layer or use a layer mask to erase the parts you don't want.

3) Make a Selective Color adjustment layer.

Reds: -78 64 100 0 (this makes the reds redder and stand out more)
Neutrals: 0 14 15 -19 (this gives the whole image a warmer tone and makes it slightly lighter)

4) Make a Levels adjustment layer. This layer serves to really make the colors pop. Levels allows it to happen subtly.

Red
Input: 27 1.15 241
Output: 21 230

Green
Input: 13 1.06 255 (subtracts green, adding more magenta)
Output 0 255 (doesn't change)

Blue
Input: 0 1.00 255 (doesn't change)
Output: 0 237 (subtracts blue from the image)

5) Make a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. This will again bring out the reds and warmer tones. The values given are for the Saturation slider.

Master: +23
Reds: +9
Yellows: -53

6) Texture time! For this icon, I wanted something that would complement the now brightened cap but not distract from it. I used THIS texture from 77words. I set it to DARKEN at 100%. DARKER COLOR could also work for this one (it compares the two layers and allows the darker color of two locations to be visible). I didn't like how the texture looked over her face, so I took an eraser and erased the texture in that spot. However, using a layer mask and painting on it with black is a better, non-destructive method.

7) Now, add a color balance layer. This will add the finishing touches to the coloring. Make sure that PRESERVE LUMINOSITY is checked.

Shadows: -52 3 0
Midtones: 23 6 -20

8) I added THIS tan colored texture from 77words on top of it all. I didn't like the darker parts on the edges, so I rotated it 90 degrees to the right and *gasp* stretched the texture so that the spots were out of the frame. I usually wouldn't reccommend stretching anything, but since an icon is so small and there's not much detail in the texture, we're good. :) Set the texture to DARKEN at 100%.

9) To polish it off, I added text. I used the font "Perpetua" (14pt and black) with the anti-aliasing set to STRONG.

This layout uses the font Zephyr. To see the header links and the subjects in that font, make sure that you have Zephyr installed on your computer. Those who do not have the font will see the subjects and header links in Verdana.

Also, if you like the layout, but not the Twilight theme, all you have to do is not use the Twilight font and header. ;D

Installation Instructions

.01	Make sure your journal is set to Flexible Squares under Customize Journal Style.
.02	Go to Customize Your Theme and click on Custom CSS in the sidebar.
.03	Set all drop down menus to no.
.04	Copy and paste everything from the code box above into the box labeled Custom Stylesheet.
.05	If you would like to use the header pictured, upload this header to your own image host, such as Photobucket. Then, find where it says PLACE HEADER URL HERE in the code and paste in your URL. If you would like to use your own header, place your URL here. Note: the header I made is 830x315. If you plan on using a header of a different size, make sure to change the width and height values under .headerimage* to fit your dimensions.*
.06	Hit Save Changes and you should be done!

- Credit sunrise_sets or sunset_rises somewhere visible, such as in your profile layout.

- This is my first layout, so if you see anything that I forgot to code, or just plain looks weird, please let me know and I'll try to fix it.

Header Tutorial

I felt like writing a tutorial. =)

Learn how to make this:

Translatable!
No selective coloring!
Made in Photoshop Elements 4.0.

1) Open up a blank canvas. Mine was 850x400. Fill it with white.

2) If your pictures are in front of a background you may need to cut them out using the eraser tool or something similar first. Mine were plain white. Position them how you want on the canvas. I used these two pictures:

3) Open up this texture by shoqolad. Position it so only the brown bar is showing. Set it to "Multiply" at 100%

4) The flower brush on the left is from the Butterfly Garden set from www.aethereality.net. Make a new layer and put it in at whatever size you want. Make sure that your foreground color is black and your background color is white. Erase the part of the flower that crosses the brown stripe.

5) Open up the other flower brush used here from the same pack and put it on the other side.

6) Make a new layer and pick a gold-ish color. Click the "Gradient Tool" button and then click "Edit." Click the "Foreground to Transparent" button. Make sure that the "Radial Gradient" option is selected. Make the gradient over the circular flower and set the layer to "Overlay" at 100%

7) Make a new layer and change your foreground layer to a red color. Make a small radial gradient over the center of one of the flowers on the right. Set the layer to "Lighten" at 100%. Make two more layers and do this two more times for the other flowers.

8) Open up a dash texture or brush similar to this. The actual brushes I used are from myrasis. Position it wherever you want.

9) Type out your text. Here I used the font "Pea Missy Cursive." Make the text bold. Then, right click on the layer in the Layers Palette and select "Simplify Layer." Go to Edit> Stroke (Outline) Selection. Make the color black and make it 1px wide. Make the location "outside."

Edit: I left out the gradient part! I didn't even notice that the numbers skipped from 5 to 8. Sorry to anyone who tried it and was confused!
