If you have any good wishes, prayers, mojo, what have you to spare...

I know someone who can really use them right now. A woman I used to work with at my old job is going through something no parent should ever have to. Her 9 year old son went swimming in a public pool on Saturday and was found floating unconcious. He was revived but right now they don't know the extent of the brain damage that may have been done. They have him in a medically induced coma and he's on a respirator 60% of the time. Apparently there are encouraging signs - he moves his eyes and lips and reacts to being touched. However they have to bring him out of the coma very gradually because otherwise it will be too much stress to his body, and until he is they can't tell how much brain damage there is. I don't know how long that will take, but apparently the doctor told his mom it will be a "long, slow road". For her it's going to be a long slow nightmare. So if anyone can spare some prayers if you pray or good thoughts if you don't, please send them to Sai and his mom Pallavi. Much appreciated.

Wii Fit scared the bejesus out of me tonight

Seriously.

I unlocked a new balance exercise called the Lotus Focus. You sit on the balance board in the lotus position (or, as they helpfully point out, if you can't do it just sit cross legged) and try to keep your spine perfectly straight and balanced for as long as you can. On the screen is a picture of a candle, and the flame shimmers at any movement and goes out when you lose your balance. They try to distract you, like with a moth flying near the flame, and footsteps in the distance. Anyway, I was able to keep the candle lit for 90 seconds. Not bad for someone with sucky balance I guess, but when you blow your candle out you hear this deep grunt/shriek like the sounds they make in karate - I don't know how else to describe it. Jesus. I jumped about 20 feet in the air. I think I screamed a little too. I'm not sure my heart can take this game.

I got tickets for Sheryl Crow next week - they had a $10 lawn seat sale, woot!

Still grinning like a fool at the thought of Colin and Ryan together in Montreal *happy sigh*

Wii Fit Update

I promised a couple of you I'd give updates on this, so here 'tis:

Two weeks in, I'm still using it faithfully, which is good. I can definitely see that it will get less "fun" down the road as I get more used to it, but I've never considered working out fun, just something I needed to do, so that's not necessarily a bad sign. When I'm really trying to get in shape, I'll do it.

It is definitely giving me a total body workout (if I do the right exercises). I never really realized before that I wasn't doing much for my upper body at all. Which I should have, because that's my problem area. When my weight goes up, the first place I see it is in my belly, and my arms have always been horrendous - flabby even when I'm at my lower weights. Meanwhile my legs tend to be in decent shape. I guess that's because when I do exercise I do aerobic type things or run, which mainly works the leg muscles. So naturally the things I'm good at on Wii Fit are the aerobic exercises and the strength training and yoga exercises that concentrate on the lower body. My balance still sucks.

A typical workout for me goes like this:

I start with about 25 minutes of aerobic exercise. The different kinds are:

Basic Step: Very simple step aerobic routine. You step on and off the balance board in rhythm. Easy enough to do but it does get your heart pumping. Each round is 3 minutes long, I usually do 3 to start off. On screen you see your Mii doing it along with a bunch of other Miis, including ones you created. I finally got around to playing with the Mii feature, so this morning I worked out alongside Mii Colin :) It was kind of cool. He kept turning his head and smiling at me. He's a nice guy ;)

Basic Run: Just running in place. You hold the Wii remote and run. On screen they scroll scenery by like you're running through a park. It reads your movements from the remote and tells you if your pace is steady, that you need to move your arms more (I always get that), etc. 4 minutes - I usually only do it once, though I'm trying to motivate myself to do it twice in a work out.

Advance Step: More step aerobics, with slightly more complicated steps like kicks and turns, and a faster pace. 5 minutes. I do this twice.

Other stuff: After I do the stuff above, I vary what I do next. You can do hula hooping, where you just swivel your hips to keep hoops in motion. There's also rythm boxing, which I totally suck at. You throw punches and try to duck them from your oponent. My Mii takes quite a beating here. Sometimes I'll just do another step routine.

After you complete an exercise, you get anywhere from 0-4 stars based on how well you did the exercise (and for step you get a numeric score based on the number of steps you did in rhythm, how many you at least did, and how many you missed). This category is where I do best. I get 3 stars after most exercises (except boxing). It's fun to try to improve your scores, so the challenge aspect of it is helpful in keeping me coming back to it. I especially like trying to top my step score in each successive round.

Strength Training: There are about 30 different exercises to pick from that work various muscle areas. I haven't even unlocked them all (you unlock them by successfully completing others. You follow an onscreen trainier, and you get scores on most of these too. I'm a lot better at the leg/thigh/abdominal exercises than at the upper body, so I'm really trying to concentrate on the upper body ones. I usually get in the 1-2 star range here depending on what I'm doing, because you do have to balance for a lot of them. I really, really have sucky balance! I never realized that before... I also have no arm strength, so I can't do pushups. I do see improvement in some of these, although my scores are generally pretty low and generate snide remarks from the trainer like "it's tough to maintain your balance when you're tired, isn't it?" Bite me.

Balance Games: See above comments re my sucky balance. Games include slalom skiing, where you move your body from side to side to get through flags, soccer heading where you move back and forth to hit soccer balls with your head, a thing where you're a penguin on an iceberg trying to catch flying fish without sliding off into the water, etc. I am finally starting to see SLIGHT improvement in the slalom skiing, which is the one I do most.

Yoga: Very similar to Strength Training, and you follow the same onscreen trainer. I do about as well here too, depending on which part of the body the exercise is focusing on.

I weighed myself this morning and I was down half a pound since I started, which, big whoop, but since I really haven't dieted in the past 2 weeks, that impressed me. It must be doing something right. I always end up sweating like a pig, and I can feel my muscles throbbing afterward. So, so far so good, and I think it was definitely a worthwhile investment.

</div>

Now back to squeeing over Clay's Montreal news ;)

Sitting home in front of the computer on Friday night is the new cool

Yeah, remember when going out on a date with a hot guy or girl and getting trashed was cool? Well, now that I'm all grown up and stuff, the NEW cool is Friday night, drinking an iced coffee and getting ready to plunge into all these great fics that have been posted. Time to put a dent in my fictigue ™ (look, Allie! I did the ™ sign!), which is defined by the lovely Allie as:

fictigue, n. The state of being overwhelmed by a smorgasbord of tasty fic while at the same time knowing you've got no time to read it all NOWNOWNOW!

I also may take a stab at writing some more tonight. Get one fic done and I always expect to be on a roll (looks ruefully at 3 works in progress)

Woo hoo! I love Friday night!

Soooooooo many awesome looking fics posted these last two days. My goal is to get to them all. Unfortunately for me, I don't have a few days free to just sit here reading them straight through - wish I did! So it's going to take me a little while to get to everyone's... just wanted to let y'all know if you don't see a comment from me right away. I'm working on it!
Iconage question

I downloaded a free trial of Snag It so I could try my hand at icon making. So far it's just giving me a headache, lol. Question for you icon making pros... I'm not sure how to ask this so it makes sense, but.... I'm trying to make an icon out of the picture I used for this entry *points*. See how it's kinda rectangular, and doesn't fill the whole "box" that you can use for icons? Like most icons come out bigger, and more square. Is there a way to make the picture bigger? I can't figure that out. With the size it is now, when I put the text on it you can't even read it. *scowls*

Help? Please? :)

I was reading this article today about a survey of American's favorite books. They polled different demographic groups and the Bible actually came in number one across all groups. Second place was "Gone With The Wind", third were the Tolkien books and fourth were the Harry Potters.

Hmm... what does it say about me that my current favorite book (it changes every few years) is called "How To Kill A Rock Star"?

Wind update

Well, I survived ;) But dang! I really am not usually a wuss when it comes to weather. I'm not joking when I say I've never seen anything like that wind last night. It did settle down and it was pretty windy for the rest of the night, but nothing like the two half hour or so bursts of what had to be hurricane force winds. The tree by my parking space made it, luckily for me. Surprisingly there weren't too many downed branches, but when I went out this morning I discovered that this high wooden fence that separates the complex's parking lot from the empty lot next door was completely trashed - 2/3 of it is splattered on the ground and the rest is hanging in shreds. Day-um. Luckily there were no cars parked there - it's the fire zone.

Not much wind happening now, but it's gone down to the high 30s/low 40s, when yesterday it was close to 60 even with the rain! Stupid weather.

Holy crap...

I was sitting here at my desk and all of a sudden I heard a ROAR from outside and the windows started rattling. I looked out and saw that the wind was blowing so hard that the trees were actually bending over nearly double. Ho...ly... SHIT. I have NEVER seen wind this strong. As I was looking out the window the power went off and came back on again right away. I turned on the weather channel, really worried that a tornado could be coming - dead serious, I've never ever seen this much wind. Nothing about tornadoes but they had one of those red screen crawls with the beeping sound saying severe thunderstorms in the area with dangerous winds. The part that scared me was it said "seek shelter NOW in a sturdy structure and stay away from windows". OMG... is my condo considered a sturdy structure??? The wind seems to have died down some but I can still hear it, and a "strong wind warning" is in effect all night.

Ugh - just as I was typing that, there was another big ass gust of wind. It's freaking me out.

Someone make this stop... *shivers*

Ahh, freedom... maybe

Since I stayed home from work yesterday, I had the resume company send me a job and I got the bulk of it done (it's due late tonight). Just a little tweaking here and there to do, then I'm done. I could take another job today if I wanted to but if I don't, I have the weekend free... so I'm thinking, not! :D Lying in bed this morning when I first woke up was sooooo luxurious, thinking "I don't HAVE to get up and when I do, once I knock off the rest of the resume I can do whatever I want - a whole two days of not stressing over a deadline!" So I got up and here I sit drinking coffee and reading my f-list while the editing job sits untouched on the desk beside me. Very productive ;)

The snow stopped, yay! The worst of it stopped around 2PM yesterday and I already shoveled out my car. Actually one of the condo association maintenence guys did most of it for me. They're only responsible for plowing and shoveling the walks and steps, but they were out when I started and one of them went all Big Strong Man and came over and did it for me. Took him about 10 seconds, too - I would have been there for an hour. We got a little more snow overnight but it looks like less than an inch.

OK - on to the editing job! Or... hmmm... maybe I'll go make breakfast first... ;)

Thanks Mel!

Rules are pretty simple:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4.Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post it in your own journal.

Image is behind the cut, because of moderate (?, how do you really tell, anyway?) size.

</div>
ETA - and, because she continues to be awesome, Mel done made me an album back too:

</div>

2007 Writing Meme Yoinked From Indy :)

So Indy posted this awesome entry in her journal that I had to rip off ;) Reading her post brought me back to a lot of her fics that I loved reading, and also started me thinking about my own writing in terms of these questions. I thought it might be kind of cool to see others post about their work too, and revisit some of their fics. So with Indy's permission, I'm posting my version of her mega-cool entry. This is based on the fics I wrote in 2007. Now, go post yours! :)

Stories completed this year: 11 stories (more than a page or so in length), 4 chapters of a story in progress (posted) and 10 drabbles/ficlets.

WIPs: Tons! I keep starting stuff and hitting a brick wall :P Hoping to get past that in 2008... at least with some of them. Some of them should probably never be seen by human eyes.

My favorite stories this year: I love Kid. It was kind of a challenge because it was my first full length story that wasn't Ryan/Colin, plus it's one of the few things I've written myself that I actually read and think "that was a good story", lol. I also ended up really liking my Ry/Col Christmas fluff fest, Ornament.

My best story this year: I’m gonna say Kid.

What everyone else thought was my best story this year: Again, gonna have to go with Kid, based on the feedback I received.

Stories most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Sonic Death Monkey. I got like two comments on that one. Not sure if it wasn’t a popular pairing (Jeff/Chip) or if the story just sucked ;)

Story I wrote that I thought I'd never write: Fifth Wheel, which implies that Ryan loses Colin to Greg.

Most fun story to write: Not Another Slashy Teen Movie, my “Breakfast Club” parody.

Least fun story to write: Hmm. I guess Fifth Wheel. I hate seeing my OTP broken up. But this one just demanded to be written.

Easiest story to write: Wake Up Call . Literally popped into my head driving home from work, and I put it down on paper (well, on the computer screen) in about 10 minutes.

Hardest story to write: Office Visit, my secret summer challenge fic written for Cae. She gave me a great prompt, and I adore her, so I really, really wanted to do this one justice. I didn’t. It just wasn’t happening. Sigh.

Hottest story: None of my stories are really hot, I'm afraid. I did a sex scene in Under My Skin, Part 3. The only NC-17 I did all year, and I'm not even sure it merits that rating.

Favorite... Ryan: Ornament - Goofy young Ryan. Not Another Slashy Teen Movie - troubled teenage Ryan. Free - Psycho Ryan.

Colin: You know, I don’t write Colin all that well, which sucks. Gotta work on that. I guess he came out okay in Under My Skin . I think I wrote him all right in a story I did in 2006, but this is about my 2007 writing, so we won’t go into that ;)

Greg: Under My Skin. My longest story to date (not finished yet). I love getting into his character.

Jeff: Not Another Slashy Teen Movie – Jeff as the weird kid. I can sort of imagine him having been this way as a teen in real life.

Other Character(s): I kinda liked my Clive in Someday.

Favorite opening lines: “It had been his idea to begin with – he couldn’t escape that fact.” Fifth Wheel

Favorite closing lines: “Kids grow up.” Kid

The closing line in Free – not putting it here in case someone is intrigued enough to go back and read the story, since the last line is the twist.

“Drew reached up and slowly fastened the cape securely around his neck. Then, with a whoop of excitement, he ran down the sidewalk, the cape flowing behind him like wings.” Not Another Slashy Teen Movie

Favorite Other Lines: "Something broke in Greg then - some last lingering shred of the protective shield he’d built around his heart. The one that Jeff had been steadily tearing down these last few weeks, in spite of his best efforts to keep it intact. He closed his eyes briefly as the shattered pieces slid away." Kid

“In the few months that they’d known each other, they’d become so close that Ryan could swear he felt Colin’s emotions for him.” Ornament

“Why he would sometimes find himself missing him, when Chip was only on the other end of the couch or on the barstool next to his, because somehow just being in the same room wasn’t enough.” Sonic Death Monkey

“When the reply came from miles across the ocean, Greg’s eyes filled with tears. Not the tears of a lost someday this time, but of joy.” Someday

“As for his heart, though, I knew it wasn’t nearly that far off. That was only a few doors down the hall, in another hotel room occupied by the one who truly owned it.” Under My Skin, Part 3

“But to sacrifice his own happiness because he wanted to protect Ryan from being hurt - that was something else entirely. It was selfless. Noble. It spoke of the kind of profound love that I’d just been swearing to Colin doesn’t exist. My God, he almost made me believe in it.” Under My Skin, Part 4

</div>

I started updating my list of links to my fics because it had been a while and quite a few were missing. I was almost done and then for some stupid reason, totally not thinking I clicked the refresh button on my browser and lost my updates.

I'm going to a concert tomorrow - my first of the summer (most years I pretty much live at the PNC Bank Arts Center in July and August, but this year is kinda lean b/c I'm broke :P). We have lawn seats, and usually I just sit on a blanket but it's been raining all week and I figured the lawn area is a giant mud pit by now, so I decided to invest in one of those beach chairs - the ones that are just a few inches off the ground - because they let you bring those in. I just came back from Stop & Shop, where I bought it. I had the following conversation with the cashier, a nice kid of maybe 17 or so:

Boy: Oh, these are nice chairs.
Me: Oh, are they good? I never used one.
Boy: Yeah, they're great for the beach.
Me: Well, I'm taking it to a concert where I have lawn seats.
Boy: Oh yeah? Who are you going to see?
Me: The Goo Goo Dolls.
Boy: *blinks in complete shock* The Goo Goo Dolls? Huh, you like them?
Me: Yeah, I do. I know, you think I'm too old, but I do.
Boy: *cracks up. Does NOT say "Oh, no, no! I never thought that!*
Me: Ya know, you were supposed to say "you're not old!"
Boy: *laughs some more*. Have a great time at the show.
Me: Bite me, you little shit. (OK, I didn't say that out loud.)

Sigh. Well, I can use the chair next week when I see The Steve Miller Band too. At least I'm guessing I will be on the younger side of THAT crowd.

This is mostly for the non-Kathy Greenwood fans, lol. I don't really like or dislike her, but I thought this was funny anyway. I've been cataloging my video tapes of WL episodes so I've been watching a lot the past week or so. I caught a moment that cracked me the hell up. In the Jerry Springer version of "Millionaire Show", the scene ends in a brawl with Ryan on the ground while Colin "kicks his ass" and then starts fake making out with Kathy - first of all, it cracks me up that he does the turn the head away and pretend to kiss her thing, when he'll kiss Ryan on the mouth ("oh who am I kidding" - SQUEEEEE!). But what really made me laugh was when Drew hit the buzzer to end the scene. Colin IMMEDIATELY backs away from Kathy and turns to look at Ryan. I mean, he almost pushes the chick away from him. She totally ceases to exist for him in that moment. And then he reaches down and takes Ryan's arm to help him up. Guess he has his priorities!

snicker...

Okay, my subject heading made me think of "touched by an angle" from Props for some reason. Yeah, I'm a dork. Anyway, here are my six fun facts about me. I am so exciting.

1. My favorite rock star is Tom Petty and I've met him a couple of times. Twice I have gotten to go to concerts as his "guest" and got to go up to the box office and tell them I was on the band list (as in "I'm with the band". Except the first time I spoiled the uber-cool effect by squeeing to my friend "look! I'm on his list! Check it out! There's my name, right under his!" To which my friend patted me on the shoulder and replied: "Smooth.")

2. I drive more than 25 miles each way to go to the dentist. Several years ago I finally found one I am comfortable with and I would follow him to the ends of the earth. So even though I've moved since then, I have never changed dentists. I don't want to get back into the dentist phobia thing.

3. I have been in the throes of a "must leave my crappy job" frenzy and sending out my resume right and left this past month or so. I had an interview last week, a phone screen on Monday, which ended up with the guy saying he didn't think I was the best fit for that position but he *might* have something else for me and he'd be back in touch - he hasn't been though) and another phone interview today, where I was told I was in the top 10 candidates chosen from all the applicants and early next week they will be calling back 3-4 people for in-person interviews. So I'm hoping something might come from all this.

4. I cut up a honeydew melon last night and threw the rinds into the kitchen trash. I didn't take the garbage out so when I got home from work tonight the whole place smelled like spoiled honeydew melon. Ah yes, that was a lovely random fact!

5. When I was a kid, three kids I knew died at the age of 15. One from heart failure, one from leukemia, and one suicide. They were all older than me when they died. I got to be kind of paranoid about turning 15 myself and was very relieved when my 16th birthday arrived.

6. I am ADDICTED to television shows on DVD. Mostly shows I used to watch when I was younger, when I watched a whole heck of a lot more TV than I do now. Shows I've watched recently: "Family Affair", "The Facts Of Life", "Little House On The Prairie", "Degrassi Junior High" (I watch the Next Generation version too that's on now). I also watch more recent ones like "Sex And The City", "Lost" (watch it religiously on TV too but I always find something I missed on the DVDs), "American Dreams". Waiting for me to get to: "Saturday Night Live" season one, "The L Word" season one, and of course, UK "Whose Line" season one and two which I finally got from my mom last weekend :)

OK... if you're reading this, then Tag! You're it!

I know there's been some discussion of this here this week. I completely despise Bush and his administration, but I have to admit... I think this is hysterical **ducks head*** sorry

I spent a lot of time writing today, after weeks of my creativity apparently deciding to take a vacation without me. I got part one of my new long fic up and so far it's been well received, yay! I have a good portion of part two done too... I may even get it posted in the next day or two. Hopefully my creativity will decide to stick around for a while this time and allow me to do regular updates for "Under My Skin". Today was great - I love when you get on a roll and can lose yourself in your characters for hours at a time.

I'm really liking writing Greg. He's not part of my OTP, and actually the Greg/Ryan pairing has always kinda bugged me, lol... just 'cuz I don't see it, not in a romance sense. But I could sorta imagine them having a pure sex relationship and that's what I'm doing with them in my fic. Anyway, I adore Greg and he's always seemed like a fascinatingly complex personality to me. I'm having fun with him :)

I spent a fair amount of time on a fic today. Not my long rambling, possibly never to be finished long fic, but one I started a month or two ago. Hoping to have it finished within the next couple of days. It's such a relief to be writing again. I hope I can keep the ball rolling...
