Word count: 26,000, give or take a thousand. Haven't added it up.

Summary: Remus Lupin, presumed dead after the war, finds himself in need of rent money. He answers an ad and gets into the business of donating memories, but he soon finds them too dear to part with. So he gets into the business of Severus Snape, instead.

My entry for Lusty Month of May on pervy_werewolf has been the most difficult thing I've written in about a year. Of course, it's also the only thing I've written in about a year (good God, really? answer: yes, or more), so I can't really be surprised.

It's more than a point of pride to finish the month out: I need to write it. I've put LMOM in front of schoolwork this month, and I can't say I'm sorry for it. I'm writing my way back to myself. I feel so much better when I'm writing, when I'm active online, when I'm in contact with my lovely flist and when I'm taking part in the community, I can't even tell you what it means to me. What all of you mean to me, even if we don't talk or comment much.

I feel that if I can just get through the month... just a few more days... I can finally deal with some other obligations and do the things that have been weighing on my mind. I'm hoping.

Here's to new beginnings.

Trek fandom question

Okay, I love Star Trek even though I have no plans on getting into the fandom, and I am loving all the squee and commentary and fic postings about Star Trek that I'm seeing on my friends page. I am.

That said, I have a question. Doesn't... I mean, I'm old school Trek, but I thought that no one calls McCoy "Bones" except Kirk. Am I mistaken (it's happened before)? Did I miss something in the movie? In one of the (few) Star Trek novels I haven't read? Help out a fangirl who's not in the fandom.

If Snape showed up in a post-DH fic...

I would really, really appreciate it if someone who hasn't yet written a prompt (or four) for the Snupin Fantasy Fest could pop over and toss something out there! (Or, for LJ'ers, leave a comment on this locked entry.) I would dearly love to write for it, but I haven't a prompt in me to offer. I know it doesn't have to be one-for-one, but I'll feel better if there was someone contributing prompts that wouldn't have, otherwise. You don't have to tell me about it, even... just fill out the poll and leave a prompt (or four).

If you don't like Snupin, pretend it's two other characters and give a prompt on the generic side. :D

Some of you may have heard of "Live Long and Marry," a fandom auction to raise money to support marriage equality. Bidding begins on July 1, 12:01 PacificTime, 2008, and closes on July 15, 12:01 Pacific Time, 2008. Purpose: The auction will raise money for the fight against the California initiative which will legally destroy existing same-sex marriages and ban any further ones. If the initiative passes, it will write discrimination into the state constitution, annul existing marriages,and make Mr. Sulu cry. (Awww!) Anyway, I'm considering tossing something into the ring in addition to bidding on others' offers, but I don't know what to put up.

Or "Summer - time for fandom!"

So, my little "hiatus" from fandom and LJ has lasted longer than I may have liked, but that's all right. I have been missing reading, writing, commenting, and squeeing about all this Harry Potter stuff, so I hope to get back to the fun! I've got some thoughts on Charlie I need to nail down. Did you guys realize how much he is not mentioned in Deathly Hallows?! (For the record, I will be reading and posting to both LJ and IJ, so please don't feel obligated to "watch" both places.)

Without further ado, my answers to some interview questions from marginaliana! :)

1. What's your favorite piece of fanfiction that you've written?

I would have to say "We Who Persevere." It was so easy to write, I mean just poured out of me, and the style took care of itself for the most part.

2. If you could have someone create a piece of clothing or furniture or art just for you, what would it be like?

I've always loved to put my feet up on things, like tables or walls depending on where I am. I would love a piece of furniture where I could sit comfortably and put my feet up - WAY up. It would also clash hideously with every other piece of furniture in the room, and it would be totally resistant to cat claws and dog paws.

3. What's the weather like where you are?

The last couple of days have been pretty hot and muggy, with lots of thunderstorms and lightning and a few floods and even a tornado warning. It's my first springtime in Ohio, and I'm a little weirded out by it. I always knew I would miss California weather, but I'm surprised to find myself missing the "normalcy" of Virginia weather too :)

4. Is there one book that you would say was very formative in your youth/teenage years?

In a word... no. I read so much, so early in life, that I couldn't point to one or two as formative. One of the stories that stayed with me was a trilogy of short novels called "The True Game," by Sheri S. Tepper. I've just learned that she did in fact write the sequels to that, in the form of two more trilogies from different characters' perspectives, so I'm looking forward to finding those.

5. What's one weird habit you have?

I have been known to take photographs of people's houses so that I can use them as inspirations in the Sims 2. I don't know if I'd call it a "habit," but it's definitely weird :).

Fic! Whoa!

This started in November of 2006, when I wrote a whole bunch of kind of random Snape/Harry lovin'. Then, for last summer's fic exchange, hp_summersmut, I got a lovely prompt from unbroken_halo and managed to salvage some, rewrite a lot, and finish the thing. I never posted it here, so please take a look if you haven't. I had a lot of fun with it :).

SUMMARY: Harry and Hermione have been friends for a long time, but he still isn't too sure about her suggestion to use a dating service (especially when that dating service has a reputation for catering to, shall we say, "alternative" tastes). What follows is a mix of passion, disappointment, meddling, and new discoveries, as Harry finds himself facing choices and situations he'd never dreamed of.

On masterlists and indices

It has come to my attention that my fic index here on LJ is out of date, as is my IJ community summerfic, where I index all stories. There are at least three I can see to add to the latter, so I'm working on getting all the links and stuff straightened out so I can post them (omg, it is so much easier to do that at the time something goes up!). Hopefully I'll post the first of them by tomorrow sometime.

Anyway, all this occurred to me while I was eying remixredux08's info. I feel like Will Ferrell from Elf: What's a remix?!?! I want one!!

Of course, it's not likely I'll be part of it, all things considered, but it's nice to know it's there, anyway.

Two news items!

First, celandineb wrote me a Snape/Lupin drabble (Troth, here), which makes me all warm and gooey inside. Thank you so much, Cel!!

Second, as I mentioned on lupin_snape, the latest episode of Snapecast features a panel discussing Snape ships, and I got to be on it representing Snape/Lupin as well as some other rarer Snape pairs. First and last post on Nanowrimo

Together with Penguin Group and HP, Amazon.com is holding a "Be the next breakthrough novelist" contest, where up to 5,000 people can submit an original, finished manuscript for judging.

Perusing my past Nanowrimo novels for a possible entrant, and looking at the calendar to see just how close November is (although my anniversary is closer!), have made me realize that Nanowrimo is a teensy bit limited for what I eventually want to do. My Big Novel isn't going to be done - no, not even a rough first draft - in one calendar month, and attempting to do it that way would actually do more harm than good.

However, the backstory to my Big Novel *can* be done in a month, and I'm hoping that the spontaneity of writing it this way might even take me for a few twists and turns I hadn't yet thought of. In any case, fleshing out the characters by giving them 50,000 words to run around in is definitely going to help me farther down the line.

So, it won't be fanfiction this year. That means I won't talk about it on public posts after this one, but I will probably complain about it in real-life posts :). If you're doing Nano this year, let's be Writing Buddies! I'm on the Nano site at summerborn. My working title, btw, which doesn't even matter since this is only a backstory, is Before the Maelstrom, as my Big Novel is "Maelstrom." Cool, eh?

1. She would have worn a nicer dress at her wedding. Or, for that matter, actually gotten dressed up for it at all.

2. To be honest, though, that would have required an actual wedding instead of just a quick ceremony down at the justice of the peace. So she would change that part, too.

3. Then again, an actual wedding would have meant telling her father she was marrying a Muggle. And no amount of turning back time would make Tobias Snape a wizard, much less a pureblood wizard of good breeding. So she wouldn't change that after all.

4. Maybe… maybe if she hadn't gotten pregnant, then she wouldn't have married him. Maybe she could change that, and maybe that would have been enough for her to avoid being chained to a man who was never capable of understanding her.

5. But no. 1. When he was in school, he used to tell himself to look on the bright side—just think of all the classes he got to miss.

2. He likes being able to do something no one else in the Order can do. Oh, certainly, Severus is the master spy, but only Remus can play the part of a werewolf in Fenrir's pack.

3. Other people use drugs or alcohol (or yoga or jogging or knitting) to get "out of their heads" for a while, as a break from the stresses of life. Remus lives each day knowing that he will spend time every month out of his own head, and his coming to terms with that fact has allowed him to Deal With Things with more equanimity than most. He has come to depend on his transformations, if not exactly look forward to them, as a regular break from having to think. It helps him.

Why I like so many different characters paired with Snape. (Contains spoilers for DH)

If this were for a broader audience, I would need to start off with some backing-up of the statement "Snape is an interesting character." For the moment, I'm going to take it as read that Snape fascinates many in fandom.

One thing I find fascinating is that Snape is endlessly faceted. I joked once that I had a hundred Snapes in my head, and I'd written about a dozen of them at various points. I think it's absolutely true; and different pairings allow us to imagine him as completely different kinds of people.

Part II: Why fanfic?

Answer: Fanfic allows us to speculate in a deeply immersive, satisfying way: narrative. I mean, why not just write an essay describing what Snape would be like if his father had killed his mother when Snape was only four, and he'd gone to live with some distant relatives, the Blacks and their three daughters, Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa? Because it's a hell of a lot more fun as a story. Humans love stories. It's in our nature. They make us feel, and we love to feel. (It's the reason why "One death is a tragedy. A million is a statistic." -Joseph Stalin. But I'm digressing again.)

Now we have two things: an interesting character with a lot of blanks we can fill in (Snape), and a compelling method of doing so (story-telling via fanfic). This is why I love to write about him. He's so versatile.
