This week I screwed on the macro doohickeys jdorff got me for Christmas a couple of years ago to take pictures of my newly sprouting seeds. Today I left them on and took pictures of everything in sight. :-D

This is the D50 scsuehle bought me about a year and a half ago--a refurb through Amazon with the 18-55 lens for about $550. Now it's $1000. What!? Is discontinuing it driving up the price of the remaining ones instead of making people discount them to get rid of them?

I just noticed the "total shutter releases for camera" line in a photo's EXIF data the other day. I don't know why I didn't remember seeing it before. I'm at around 15,500. That divides out to about 32 pictures per day for the last 16 months. Probably more accurately, about 215 pictures per weekend.

The thing that I remember most about the movie Minority Report was the advertising. "Hello Mr. Yukkamoto, and welcome back to the Gap!" Signs on the street recognized you and shouted personalized ads. It was creepy and part of the movie's point.

Leave it to Apple to make it come true. From CNN:

The Chicago Manual answers questions each month, and it's one of my favorite mailing lists. (Nerd!) This month had one of the best answers ever, and apparently I missed an equally awesome one last month.

Q. Contracts often employ defined terms in quotes and parentheses, e.g., ABC Corp. (the “Seller”) shall sell ten widgets to XYZ Corp. (the “Buyer”). When drafting such a contract, I always put a period after the close parenthesis if it is the end of the sentence, such as in the above example. But it’s like listening to nails on a chalkboard to me to have a period essentially (ignoring the parenthetical) follow the period employed in an abbreviation. What do you recommend?

Helen Duncan was arrested during World War II after holding a seance where she claimed the spirit of a sailor from HMS Barham told her his ship had been sunk. Problem was, the Barham’s sinking was then still a military secret, and authorities feared Duncan might reveal details about the impending D-Day invasion, presumably also obtained from supernatural sources. She was tried under the Witchcraft Act of 1735 and sentenced to nine months in jail. Although the act was repealed in 1951, the UK has refused to grant Duncan a posthumous pardon.

I never understood getting all googly oogly over Orlando Bloom. Until now. About halfway through this movie, when the shirt's undone, and oh my... I think I'm having another moment. :-)

I saw a review that described his stance at the end as being reminiscent of Errol Flynn, which might help explain my new love, as Errol is my previous love. Me and the pirate men go way back to 8th grade when I saw Captain Blood.

Did you enjoy the Orlando moment too? It's better in motion, I promise.

So, did anybody else think that when Davy Jones got his real face back, it didn't look at all like Bill Nighy?

My only complaint was that somebody brought a baby. For the love of Bob, don't bring babies to the movies!!! Seriously, I listen to a kid cry plenty at home. I got to places like movies to NOT hear that. Not only that, she let out a big one right as the camera pulled out on Will and Elizabeth's last kiss on the beach. Can you believe the timing!? So go to a mom's movie day, or the baby night on Mondays. Go to movies on the lawn or the drive-in. But no crying babies in the theater! I beg of you!

I came across this one on CakeCentral, and it's so cute! Here's the description:

This is my 3 year olds birthday cake. She couldn't decide betweenSpongebob, Dora and Strawberry Shortcake or Apple Dumpling. So – I gavethem all to her. We call it the Topsy Turvy Spongeberry Doradumplingcake. Bottom layer is 8”, (then a 4” dummy) followed by a 6” and a 3”soup can topper. Covered in mmf, the characters were toys (candytoppers) and the Strawberry Shortcake and Apple Dumpling figurines weremine from 24 years ago. I love this cake!

Lightroom users...

I was trying to work in Lightroom a few nights ago, and the computer slowed to a snail's crawl. I finally gave it the three finger salute (as Scott put it) and discovered the Applications tab in the Task Manager had a list a mile long of "Bezel." I found a couple of references online to other people having the same problem with Lightroom, but nothing on how to fix it. And the comments I saw were from people with photo libraries in the thousands, which I haven't nearly gotten to in Lightroom yet. (iPhoto, on the other hand...) Any thoughts?

Fresh mozzarella

You know what warehouse clubs get you? Two pounds of fresh mozzarella at $3.30/pound. Yum!

But it's tough to use that much at once! It came divided in two one-pound hunks, but even a pound at once might be a lot for just the two of us. So I googled to find out if and how I can store it when I'm finished. Here's what I learned:

It must be used within a day.

It must be used within a few days.

It can be stored for 4 days.

It can be stored up to 15 days.

Store it in brine.

Store it in fresh water you change every day.

Store it in plastic wrap without water.

Freeze it.

Next I might have to try making my own!

Girl Scout cookies

Last year I posted some time somewhere about these Girl Scout cookies. They were a cinnamon cookie, maybe a sort of shortbread. Does anybody know what they're called? My best guess from the sheet is the Cafe cookies, but I don't remember them having words on them. But I also know they change things, so maybe they look different now, or maybe they don't have them this year.

Does anybody have a good lemongrass chicken recipe? Or other tasty recipe that calls for lemongrass?

I love lemongrass chicken, so when I had a free McCormick coupon, I got a bottle of that since it's on the pricier end. It's been a while though, and I really need to use it!
