10 Ways to Make a Difference During the COVID-19 Pandemic
How to use kindness to change minds.
1. Realize the numbers: COVID-19 affects everyone.
COVID-19 has caused millions of deaths and countless long-term illnesses worldwide. The virus does not discriminate based on age, race, or income level, though certain groups bear disproportionate risks. We are all connected, and the health of one person affects the health of many.
2. Toughing it out is not an option.
COVID-19 is not “just a cold” and cannot be willed away by strength or optimism. It is a serious infectious disease. If you wouldn’t ignore a broken bone, don’t ignore a virus that can damage the lungs, heart, brain, and immune system. Prevention and care are not signs of weakness but of responsibility.
3. Use your vote wisely and hold leaders accountable.
Support policies and leaders who invest in pandemic preparedness, ventilation standards, paid sick leave, and access to high-quality masks and testing. Contact your county’s public health department to be more clear in their messaging. Public health is political, and your vote can save lives.
4. Integrate COVID safety into daily life.
Just as handwashing became routine after learning about germs, mask-wearing and ventilation should be normalized in crowded or high-risk settings. Talking openly about prevention helps others see that this is not unusual but smart, caring, and evidence-based.
5. Get your own house in order.
Protect yourself and your household. Wear a well-fitted N95 or KF94 in indoor public spaces, test when exposed or before gatherings, and improve airflow where you live and work. Upgrade your furnace filter to at least MERV 13, and buy an air purifier to keep the air safe. Your actions safeguard not only you but also your family, neighbors, and community.
6. Be considerate of strangers.
Masking is not just about personal safety—it protects people you may never meet. That person next to you on the bus could be immunocompromised, pregnant, or caring for someone vulnerable. Small actions can have ripple effects.
7. Listen. Really listen.
When someone asks why you’re wearing a mask, even confrontationally, treat it as an opportunity to respond with kindness: “I wear it to help keep others and myself safe.” A strong reaction to a mask can indicate fear about their own vulnerability, so don’t dismiss them. Hear their concerns and try to understand where they are coming from. Often, calm explanation defuses tension and turns a challenge into a teaching moment. Kindness creates space for people to see the humanity in others.
8. Inspire change.
Your example matters. When you wear a mask, test before visiting loved ones, or open a window, you normalize care and responsibility. Share resources, set a positive tone online and in daily life, and show that empathy is not just personal by models care for your community.
9. Empathize without prejudice.
Instead of framing masking or vaccines as a fight between “sides,” seek to understand fears or misinformation people may hold. Kindness and clarity go further than hostility in encouraging safer choices.
10. Educate others.
Not everyone understands how COVID spreads through the air or why masks remain vital. Gently share knowledge, whether about filtration, transmission, or long-term impacts. Remind people that protecting others is an act of care, not an inconvenience. Always be kind.
