S1142 originally was intended to repeal the costly Empowering Parents Grant Program as of June 30, 2025 (especially section 33-1031 – tinyurl.com/55ccmecf).

Assuming we've understood the amendment correctly, S1142 now reinstates section 33-1031 for THREE YEARS, not ending it until June 30, 2028.

What’s going on here?

Please reinstate the original bill without the amendment. Original support for the bill is below...

S1142 repeals the costly Empowering Parents Grant Program as of June 30, 2025. Bill sponsors estimate the repeal will increase the General fund by $30 million annually and reduce one full-time position (FTP) within the State Board of Education. No later than June 29, 2025, the state controller shall transfer the unobligated cash balance remaining in the empowering parents grant program fund into the general fund.

This is the first DOGE-like education bill we’ve seen, and we like it! (Unfortunately, the legislature is entertaining other expensive education bills that we hope future legislatures will repeal if they pass.) But let’s pass this one for sure.
