The level of interest in the comings and goings of the Trump family is high. It’s not just because Donald Trump is the President of the United States, but because the Trumps have been in the spotlight for years. In a way, they’re celebrities too, not just people involved with politics.

And someone who always gets a lot of attention is the president’s youngest son, Barron Trump. Mostly because he’s the one we see the least, which makes people want to know more. And Barron was conspicuously absent from a big family event recently: his father’s July 4 festivities.

Barron didn’t attend the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C, which was celebrating the US’s 250th birthday. The event took place on July 4. No reason for his absence has been given. Barron recently attended the Freedom 250 UFC fight, which was held on his father’s birthday on the South Lawn of the White House.

He wasn’t the only one who wasn’t present. Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and their three children were also absent from the July 4 festivities in D.C. Instead, the couple was seen at Michael Rubin’s famous “White Party” in The Hamptons just a day before.

Barron, however, lives much closer than Ivanka. He started attending New York University’s Stern School of Business in September 2025, and in 2025 moved to the university’s Washington campus, which is close to the White House. And he is close enough to his father to have been the one who informed him of Charlie Kirk’s shooting.

A new book, Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan claims that as White House staffers scrambled to get reliable information before bringing it to the president, Barron had already informed his father.

“Trump’s youngest son, Barron, had already called to tell his father that Kirk had been shot,” Haberman and Swan write. “The nineteen-year-old Barron was a big fan of Kirk’s and he had phoned in a state of distress. He had been worried about an assassin taking another shot at his father.”

“This is what happens when you go out there,” Barron told his father, according to the book. “This is what happened.” Trump then reportedly tried to calm Barron, saying, “calm down, honey, calm down.”

Despite this clear sign that the relationship between Trump and his son Barron is close, his favorite member of the Trump family is allegedly someone else: his granddaughter, Kai Trump.

“Kai has replaced Ivanka as Donald’s favorite,” a source told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice. “She makes him laugh, keeps him feeling young, and genuinely loves being around him. He absolutely lights up whenever she’s with him.”

“Ivanka chose a quieter life,” another insider said. “She didn’t lose Donald’s love, but she did give up the role of being the family member he most enjoys showing off. Kai has naturally stepped into that space.
