The Lookout

Overview:

The Lookout is a loft conversion and renovation project located in Denmark Hill, Lambeth, London. Following the successful kitchen extension for the same clients, they sought to transform their unused attic into a private sanctuary, including a master bedroom, en-suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, and a home office.

Project Goals:

  • Convert the unused attic into a loft suite for the parents.
  • Include a master bedroom with views of the garden.
  • Add a walk-in wardrobe, en-suite bathroom, and home office.
  • Introduce a deep blue color theme throughout the loft.
  • Involve the children in the design process.

Design and Implementation:

  • Layout and Structural Changes:
    • Applied for planning permission to change the hipped roof into a gable end roof.
    • Constructed a large dormer for the master bedroom.
    • Designed a staircase continuing from the existing one, adding natural light through a side window.
    • Created oak-paneled walls with hidden doors in the master bedroom.
  • Materials and Finishes:
    • Used oak paneling for warmth and a seamless appearance.
    • Incorporated a deep blue color throughout the loft.
    • Installed a large Velux Cabrio balcony window in the office.
    • Updated the children’s bathroom with playful terrazzo tiles.
  • Key Elements:
    • Oak-paneled walls with hidden doors create a private retreat.
    • The Velux Cabrio balcony window adds space and light.
    • A custom stained-glass window on the staircase designed with the children.

Challenges:

  • Planning Restrictions:
    • Stayed within permitted development limits.
    • The office couldn’t be included within the dormer extension due to volume limits.
  • Construction Precision:
    • The oak paneling required precise measurements and alignment.

Outcome:

The Lookout transformed the attic into a serene loft space for the parents. The deep blue accents create continuity, and the master bedroom offers views of the greenery outside. The Velux balcony window enhances natural light. The children’s involvement in designing the stained-glass window added a personal touch. The clients were delighted with the outcome.

When we were approached to transform this family’s unused attic in Denmark Hill, we wanted to create a secluded haven that would complement the bright and sociable spaces we’d previously designed in their kitchen extension. The parents were looking for something calm and elevated—a place of retreat from the hubbub of family life—while still celebrating the personality of their home and involving the children in key design decisions.

By carefully navigating planning constraints and working closely with the family, we developed a plan that would turn a hipped roof into a gable end and include a large dormer for a new master suite. The attic was to be reimagined as a serene hideaway: a master bedroom with captivating views of the leafy surroundings, an en-suite bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and even a compact home office.

A PARENTS’ SANCTUARY
Central to the design was the idea of creating a unified, welcoming palette – a deep, restful blue that runs throughout the loft. Oak panels line the walls, framing hidden doors for the walk-in wardrobe and the en-suite, ensuring a sense of privacy without breaking the visual flow. A side window was introduced along the new staircase to bring natural light down into the heart of the home.

INVOLVING THE CHILDREN
To maintain a feeling of family connection, the children were invited to contribute to the design process, especially the new stained-glass window on the staircase. The result is a playful, personal touch that adds color and charm, reminding everyone that this loft isn’t just for adults—it’s a shared family home.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
Working within permitted development constraints meant finding creative ways to carve out space for the home office while balancing the volume limits of the dormer. Meticulous craftsmanship was required to ensure the oak paneling and integrated storage felt seamless. Careful detailing around the large Velux Cabrio balcony window in the office helped add light and an elevated view despite the planning limitations.

A RAISED RETREAT
Today, The Lookout feels like an entirely new layer of the home. The master bedroom offers tranquility and garden views, while the en-suite and walk-in wardrobe provide much-needed functionality without sacrificing style. The deep blue theme ties each area together, and the playful stained-glass window is a lovely reminder of the family’s collaborative spirit.
