everything sharp! all the sharp! to be honest, i still sharpen everything. i love the sharpening tool. i have bad eyesight and i think i tend to overuse it sometimes (all the times in the early posts of this year). i started getting some recognition from the community around this time, with a few stand out icons. that was new, and awesome!

febuary

absolutelybatty sat me down for a memorable conversation where she managed to pick out all of my icons from an anon battle based on what she knew of "my style". i'd never really considered having a style so that was very cool. everything still sharp, obviously. shaaaaaarp.

this was actually one of my favorite sets of the year, despite some technical... maladjustments. the laughing master icon is one of my tops from the whole year

april

CORNETTO. i don't know what i was on in april. everything was an experiment. when i went back through i picked my favorites, so for every icon i sort of liked there were six more that made me cry into my full sized body pillow a good half hour. i really wish some of these weren't so sharp. the first one, for instance, got a good deal of notice, and all i can think now is that it's so bad and so sharp and i just want to smooth it out base-up. still, good composition!

i think my icons started to take a turn here, quality wise, at least. things stopped being so sharp and i got a more solid grip on coloring. i got called out on a-i for something (low quality? too busy? too awkward? i don't really remember) and i got a bug up my ass to step up. probably the best thing that could have happened to me, tbh.

LOVE THESE. i started to calm down around this time, focus more on quality and less on photoshop tricks~. i also started trying to do more out of the box compositions. results varied. i believe this is also when i started working on muted icons. i think the icon of the mask is one of my best of the year. and the second icon here of lorne is one of my personal favorites.

not much to say here! did an icon battle with heartoutofstone and the results weren't great! i was moving around this time and didn't have much in the way of iconing. how come you always shit out the worst icons when you're in direct competition, i don't know.

my obsession with text began around this time and i started to really love making icons, and loving the results i was getting back. even the ones i don't like here, are "salvageable" in my opinion. also i got heavy into iconing angel. ~~correlation?~~

i truly don't like that freeze frame icon. i wish i hadn't made it, lol. i would honestly like to remake it, and just make the whole thing more vibrant/darker. it always seems so light on my screen, idk. the third icon of anya is one of the best of the year for me, though.

nothing particularly memorable. had an awesome "the master" battle with johnscorpy, got served up in every way imaginable. had great fun all around. made some harry potter icons i don't like now.

talent, pure talent~. no, i joke. i could remake a lot of these even now. that being said, i do think i established a lot of the tricks i've been playing with all year now. also i tried blocking, which it turns out i love to do! i started really getting down rich colors, i think. even the ones i feel fell short were learning ~blocks. i hope to continue what i had going on in this post into 2013. september and december were my favorite months of the year and they both had a running theme on photoshop tricks and that's what i'd really love to keep going. also blocking. blocking! all the blocking! all the text! all the blocking! sharpen all things.
i also got a new laptop (i've never had a new computer) and everything just looks -much- better on it. it's significantly easier to icon on then a five year old piece of shit and my eyes don't strain so badly.

other iconing nonsense, bits and ends: didn't care much for the icon quest, i guess i never really got into it. i think it was overwhelming for me, and with amused and 7days i had my plate full on challenges. i'm a seriously slow maker!
7days was the best for me. i really love how quick-paced it is, and you get a sort of instant feedback that i find helpful.
i'm very harsh on my own icons and i really liked having a-i as another sort of "instant feedback" location so i could get a different opinion when i needed it.
my main fandoms this year were doctor who, angel, sherlock and misfits and my most iconed character was the master from doctor who (WHAT ELSE IS NEW, REALLY.) i'm going to be making a post of my favorite shows/movies after this, so more there (because everyone loves reading pretentious ramblings, right?)

i made loads of new icon maker friends this year and that's been wonderful. i think my icons have gotten better for it.

libraryofsex asked me for this tutorial! I'm trying my hand at a lot of muted colors lately and this is actually one of my favorites!

I've never written a tutorial before and I'm not sure I have defined "processes" so I'm sorry if this is just a mess.

First, I always start my icons at 200x200, for cropping purposes. Just recently I've started coloring caps first, but for this icon I just cropped it first-off.

I almost always keep my icon at 200x200 throughout the entire process, habitually shrinking it to check I'm doing okay at 100x100. I have poor eyesight so it helps me see what I'm doing, lol. For the purposes of this tutorial, since I have the psd saved at 100x100, that's what the examples will be of.

OKAY, I always have unneccesary layers, like by a dozen and a half. I can't stop, won't stop. So first I create another layer, same as the original. This is what I'll be working with. That way, if I feel I've fucked it all up, I can just go back to the first crop.

Light blobs go first. I've started using screen/curves more and more as a way to light my caps, but most of the time I still light them using light blobs as my main source. They create insta-shadows.

Because I am totally and completely unoriginal I use a vibrance layer set at color. I'd like to lie and say I fiddle with what percentage to use it at, but I think I've always just set it at 100%. In this case I'm about to negate the use of it anyways.

Selective color time! My favorite part of icon-making, tbh. I change the entire focus of the icon in this step. Sometimes I'll go through every color and mess with them, but most of the time I'll just go through the prominant icon colors. And I always do reds/yellows.

Leaving us with:

I use hard blacks in almost all of my icons, especially lately. I just love how they stand out, especially in a muted icon. Rose's eyelashes and heavy mascara are great for this!

Now comes the color balance. I always do a selective layer and then a color balance layer, because I'm boring and systematic. I don't like balance as much as I do selective and I spend little time on this step whereas I can selective color for up ten minutes.

As you can see, here the color balance was used mainly to take the colors out of the icon, leaving it muted/pale/lifeless~.

Time for some light! This icon needs some curves, bad. I'm not going to take photos of each layer here, I'm not a fan of curves (!!!) so I barely use them, tbh, other then a general brightening. I didn't use levels in this icon but I usually do those as another lightening tactic. Here's the icon with curves applied and a general view:

You can tell the lines are barely messed with at all, lol.

Okay, now the icon is brighter, but I set out for a muted icon, so I'm going to use one of my favorite old tricks of all time of all time ever. I SWEAR you can get away with this and it's not the ~devil.

Yep, the dreaded exclusion layer. I set this one to 40%, which is higher then I usually use, but for this icon it was right.

Now my icon is more or less the coloring that I want it to be at. Here's where things get sticky, due to my inability to label things. I use a ton of filters, which I'll be going over in another tutorial for 12feethigh. I don't see filters get talked about as much in the icon making world, which is weird because I use them on all my icons.

Unfortunately, as I don't label, it's going to be difficult to tell what filter I used, but I'll guess for the purposes of this tutorial. Here is where my love for duplicating and merging layers comes in.

Who needs this many layers?!

The first layer is my first merge of all the layers. I just duplicate and merge all visible layers. That's "color fill 1 copy". It is just the icon, up to this point.

This first one looks like dark strokes set to soft light on 20%. I use dark strokes on ALL THE ICONS. ALL THE ICONS. It's my favorite filter.

You reach it like all other filters:

Honestly I think color fill 1 copy 4 is just another all together merge, I can't tell any difference on my screen.

The next layer I did is a sharpening layer. I love sharpened icons, and I have a bad habit of over doing it.

I know some people do fancy unsharpening masks, etc. but I've never been able to work that so I always just go filter > sharpen. Presto!

Here are the last two layers:

I don't have the faintest clue what I used on them (like it made some sort of life altering difference to the icon, lol). The first is set at soft light 20% and the second at soft light 30%. Quite possibly a generic gaussian blur set to soft light and then another dark strokes. Sorry!

Back to the fun parts. I add another curves layer here, to brighten the icon some more.

It's just a generic spike in light. Now this icon is way too bright! I like darker icons, myself.

I add another light blob, this one is a tan and dark brown, which fits my theme.

There's always a final selective coloring layer. I use it to fix any problems I've raised brightening/filtering, to restore what I want as the final coloring to the icon.

Here, I only touched up the reds, yellows and blacks.

Have I mentioned I love hard blacks? Now we're basically done. I want to add a final layer now, to warm the icon up some, add a little fairy-tale, etc. A rose-ish tint gradient here, to match here glove, and I've set it to 50% soft light.

And that's about it! I merge the layers, save the copy, then unmerge so I can never look at the psds again, even though I always say I will.

WHEW. I'm nervous, lol. There was an anon comment at anon_icon that I overtexture/overwork icons and I was like, "I do do that." I mean, I like doing that. I love indulging in textures and the like! But I took it as a personal challenge this time, to weight backwards on it all, and I'm really glad I did, I think this is a great batch.

Obviously, it's my first post for a_mused and I'm a wreck, I love the community so much. IT MAKES ME FEEL FEELS. You guys. Ugh.

You know what else makes me feel feels? Misfits. I think that the show is one of the greatest shows on tv right now. (Okay, last season was rough, but Rudy, ugh, beautiful character) That said, it has a racially diverse cast and it's about the lower-class, of which I am one. I really enjoy seeing characters that I can relate to, and I can relate to getting kicked out, and not having any money, and slang and ~cheap language and it is really relieving to see something like that on tv. Obviously it has it's flaws, like all television programs, but it definitely hits some important marks for me.

And what show is better fit for this challenge? I find it an interesting notion that the misfit characters are all lacking social graces by social protocol but within their own group their just people. I JUST REALLY CARE ABOUT THIS SHOW.

lol, I started like five different sets. No big, but I clearly couldn't make up my mind. I have a really fond spot for Sherlock Holmes (I prefer the movie too, shocking!) and I've tried to icon it before to no sucess so I dunno what changed this time but I enjoy these a lot. I've never had so many alternatives but some of these went from color to black and white and some of them went from black and white to colored. I like the colored ones more but I enjoyed this challenge and found it challenging. Also I bought a tablet and if anyone has any tips on using it that would be AWESOME because it is such a pain. (fun pain!)

This challenge was fun at first, lol. Then I got more and more irritated, thought I'd never finish, and finally finished like... right on the dot. I'd really enjoy hearing what people like and didn't like, I have my own personal favorites but it's always nice hearing. I think I do a lot of down the rabbit hole type stuff generally so this time I tried some stuff I've never done before (18, wttttffff) and 19 was designed after my very 90's neon scarf from when I was younger. Numbers 9 and 15 are probably my favourites, I think it's the most well designed. It was fun over all!
