Canon: MS Paint Adventures - Homestuck
Character: Dave Strider
Timeline: EOA5 - Cascade midway through, right at the moment the Green Sun exploded and killed him and Rose.
Personality: Dave is an INFP, the type of person that doesn’t feel comfortable being completely honest with others initially. He says that his constant usage of irony and sarcasm is for the sake of being cool, but it also serves as a buffer zone. He’s only honest and straightforward with the people that he knows - he’s okay with his close friends knowing whether he actually cares about something or if something bothers him, because he trusts them not to use it against him. Otherwise, he will speak loops about anything and everything around strangers and he won't ever say what he really means.

Because of this, he's immune to the influences of other people, and doesn't give a crap about what 'outsiders' say or think about him. On the flip side, the people close to him are significantly influential. For instance, his best friend John’s opinions have a lot of sway over him, and his older brother is his role model in practically every way. It takes a bit of time for him to form such a strong relationship with someone - time for him to get know the person, and to feel comfortable with him or her.

He has a very deadpan and chill attitude about pretty much everything, even the most drastic events. He approaches it all with a ‘deal with it and keep going’ attitude. Even if he isn’t particularly okay with something, he’ll work through it and move on because that’s how he manages. No matter what variety of shit hits the fan, he makes it a habit to try and maintain a cool head. Even when two of his friends have been killed, (in a different timeline), he is still plowing forwards, and speaks about their deaths in a calm manner, practical and logical.

This is of course not to say he isn’t bothered by anything, he just processes both the feelings of upset and concentrates on how to deal with it simultaneously. An example of this is when he uses his time traveling abilities at one point, and he finds the corpse of his alternate self. The first thing he does is get rid of the body so that the sight of it won’t upset his friend Jade, and only after that’s dealt with does he stand and blankly stare at his blood covered hands for fifteen minutes. (The perpetual poker face Dave sports is accentuated by the fact that pretty much no one has ever seen his eyes. He never takes off his sunglasses, due to his photophobia.)

Another thing that developed gradually over time is Dave’s attitude towards dying. He’s come to a point where he’s all over the place, literally, sacrificing alternate selves constantly for the overall scheme of things, and he’s gotten tired of it. He views dying ‘for real’ as less of a sacrifice or a thing to be afraid of, and more of a relief and an escape from the sense of futility he’s begun to feel.

Background: Dave is one of four close friends, the others being John, Rose, and Jade, players in a game called Sburb, a game with reality-bending capabilities with the initial function seeming to be the salvation of the universe, but eventually ends up serving as the vehicle of its end.

When his friend John died, the proper course of events could not transpire. Jade died too, and Dave and Rose continued on in a now ‘doomed’ timeline. The two of them kept playing the game, trying to figure things out, and then Dave made his first major leap backwards in time. His now considered ‘alternate’ future self became a spirit guide of sorts - ‘Davesprite’ - helping his past self, and ensuring that John didn’t die.

After that, he continued to use his time traveling abilities to gain an advantage, acquiring vast amounts of the game’s currency in order to buy ability upgrades and such. At this point, he is contacted by one of the trolls, an alien race responsible for the creation of the humans’ universe, Terezi, who is interested in helping him. From that point on, Dave adopted the role of the time traveler managing several different things behind the scenes, working with the many paradoxical loopholes that ensured that certain things that had already happened, did in fact happen. For instance, he has to go back in time and assure his past self that following the advice of the troll Terezi is in fact what he should do, which is what he does, and did.

There is a very specific way he has to go about things, following carefully constructed self-sustaining circles of events, otherwise he’ll create paradoxes. There is one Dave that follows the ‘correct’ timeline, ‘the alpha Dave’ - many of the ‘other Daves’ are in offshoot timelines that cannot exist and thus are doomed to die, even ‘Davesprite’. Several of his alternate selves die over the course of the game. As it is, Dave is constantly in multiple places at once. Collectively, he experiences the game as being three times as long as it actually is, chronologically, due to these various shenanigans.

He plans with Rose about a way to destroy what they believe to be the source of their troubles and the threat to their universe, the Green Sun. This actually involves him allowing himself to be killed in a battle against the main antagonist of the game, Jack Noir. Rose also ends up dying. They both resurrect as their dream selves, all in accordance with their plan.

In the end however, when the both of them arrive at the point in space where they were informed the Green Sun was located at, they found nothing. They in fact caused the creation of the Green Sun. It explodes into existence, and kills the two of them in the blast.

But before Dave dies in this blast, he is brought to adstringendum.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Dave has been taught swordplay by his brother pretty much since the day he was born. He’s grown up constantly bombarded with impromptu sparring match ambushes, making him a more than competent fighter by necessity, constantly aware of his surroundings. As of right now, he wields only broken swords - he literally has to break a new sword in order to start using it.

He has a sylladex, a video game inventory system where he can store a vast amount of items in a series of captchalogue cards. This is essentially just a deck of cards, once he is no longer in the Homestuck universe. The only items he still can access are the ones he has immediately on his person, such as his sunglasses and his sword.

He is also the Knight of Time, in the Homestuck universe. This means that he is capable of traveling through time freely, within certain boundaries. But while obeying these rules, one point, he has twelve other selves running around handling various things. This ability is of course rendered moot at adstringendum, but his time ‘awareness’ is still there, something he’s always needed to keep track of his timeline acrobatics. This means that he knows there’s something weird with the adstringendum universe, because the timeline he’s always tiptoeing around just isn’t there
