There is no coincidence that the first civilizations that invented the written word used it for either the most profane (business accounting) and the most sacred (religious scribes)
I'll leave the latter as an easter egg for you to gnaw on at your own convenience but first let us pontificate on the part about business accounting
Why did this happen?
Well it relates to my first question, it's all about needles in haystacks
The first accounting had to do with loans written in clay tablets, tabulating who owes whom what because, as you may know if you've ever done financial transactions, those pesky numbers are atomic and easy to forget
Just like linguistic symbols like writing were devised to help us get concepts out of our head, the same is true for math symbols; it's just not very efficient to keep it all in our head (but at the same time, now our dependence on writing these things down has made us lose our giant capacity to memorize things unless explicitly trained, i.e. memory palaces, our ancestors could memorize what they wanted, the issue was that it was not highly accurate, if you want to learn how to engage this ancient skill DM me)
So the 10,000 things of the taoists have increased to the trillion things now that we have the internet and the internet of things and every one of those things, whether abstract or physical, needs to be queryable by a machine, which allows it to be queryable by a human
That's where the companies that are bad at finding needles in haystacks get confused; they don't have sympathy for those poor machines and their brittle pathways, now that they have AI agents, they make a secondary mistake thinking "aha the magic bullet of AI agents are here! we don't need to worry about all that"
Double wrong!
As Licklider, the leviathan of computing, foretold, we are in a symbiosis situation with computers not some wierd sci fi novel that the singulatarians in silicon valley are pretending is objective truth rather than their religion that goes by other names (please have the humility to claim it as a religion rather than as the SIMPLE TRUTH)
So this next stage will be about humans setting up systems so that both humans and machines can find needles in haystacks, when it comes to the open internet, it's easy for the machines to find what they want, but when it comes to your personal or business knowledge bases, IT IS NOT TRUE and you need to build on top of the principles foretold by Tim Berners Lee (and maybe some other stuff given you may want it private)
Scientists don't need history to do their normal science
Ahistoricism wins in the rise of Big Science
In reading Kuhn’s momentous “Structure of Scientific Revolutions” last night I learned that ahistoricism of scientists is actually something old within the tradition, not something that has happened with Big Science, the institutionalization of science as a weapon of the state
Scientists don’t need history to do their normal science, the stuff in between the revolutions of science that causes them to seek out history and philosophy to help them understand why no one agrees on the reality of the situation
They just do their lab work, the constant experimentation and observation on a guided path that is given to them by the scientific community, who are dogmatic (Kuhn thinks the dogma is a necessary part of science; Feyerabend DOES NOT and I’m excited to read him next)
It’s important to note that Kuhn was writing at the very pinnacle of Big Science so he is not seperate from it and his work might be considered propaganda of that age, a marvelous age to be a dogmatist but very challenging to wrangle with now that its breaking down
Authority, the State, and the Death of Mysticism
The Relationship Between Western Civilization and Enlightenment
Whats interesting/crazy about the relationship of western civilization to the concept of spiritual enlightenment is that it’s all about authority
In the east you had authority structures develop that explicitly made acknowledgement of the existence of the state, there were signs and dogmas used to verify enlightenment, it was an accepted goal in India for sure (look at King Gupta, now I want to know how this worked when dogmas of enlightenment came to China from India and how Confucianism/Taoism reacted.)
In the west, somehow the concept of enlightenment directly threatened the authority structures embedded in the west (I now know this to be true by studying mystics and how they were burned at stakes, but now I need to figure out why did it happen, what about it threatens the western cultural grammar?).
Here it’s important to be clear on 2 things:
The concept of enlightenment is very far away from the thing itself, although it is no thing, its more about our birthright as aware beings (I suggest Huang Po’s work here)
The actual state transcends culture so many in the west reached the state of enlightenment even though there is no cultural grammer for it (it just makes it harder and more mystical to treat it as a goal, also why would anyone want to treat it as a goal exactly???!?!?!?)
According to Dr Hawkins here are some westerners who reached the state of enlightenment (but verifying enlightenment is a rabbit hole of epic proportions, and nothing should be treated as factual here):
Meister Eckhart
John, Saint of the Cross
Metchild von Magdegburg
Rabbi moses de Leon de Granada
Plotinus
Johan Tauler
And finally the Grand Master himself, Lord Jesus Christ, who wasn’t just enlightened but changed the destiny of the entire planet and gave us the best map to salvation known to man (this is where the west really shines and maybe holds the answer to why the authority structures of the west reject the concept of enlightenment as a threat)
OpenAI self-reported they have 20 million paying customers; those people know how important it is to pay AI, and they are probably mostly coders who REALLY know why its important to pay
They also reported they have 800 million WAU (weekly active users) a few days back
This is a rough estimate of who will be the at the top of the intelli-tocracy and also reflects the amount of customers who see value in paying for things
I don’t like selling to consumers because consumers dont like to pay for things
But I love doing open source stuff with consumers (AI whisperers is an Open Source Educational Organization and hopefully soon an Open Source Engineering Organization).
Free is great but the real juice comes when two people are aligned in charging for a great service and buying that great service;
thats where the magic happens
It took me so long to understand the difference between earthly knowledge and heavenly wisdom (don’t take this tweet as meaning that heavenly wisdom is understood already, just sharing as I rachet up the ladder of conscsiousness as grace allows)
I love earthly knowledge, I love finding out how things work and I love learning from masters of their realm
But masters of the earthly realm are certainly not automatically masters of heavenly wisdom (FAR FAR FROM IT)
So one can learn from anyone
but all lessons come with a View
Some Views allow only for heaven but its hard to find those guys as they are either in caves somewhere or in some rando suburb watching cat videos on the internet
Some Views think heaven is a myth, let alone that its possible here on earth
When you learn from people, generally you take on their View, not only for the subject matter but for the whole kit and kaboodle
This is a very unconscious pattern and probably has roots deep in indigenous ways of knowledge transfer, before the written word differentiated View from culture
But you can enter this pattern consciously and learn from people with a View that you utterly reject and treat them with respect for that exchange even if you reject the View
