Beyond Category Music Album Catalog Software
Beyond Category is an application for cataloging a music collection using a relational database. The term album is used in the traditional sense of a collection of recorded songs by an artist or group of artists under a single title. That is, a cd, lp, cassette or book of 78s. Beyond Category will store information about the album, songs and composers on the album as well as the names of other performers on the album and the roles they play.
The data entered can be as simple as a list of albums with just the bare facts – title, catalog number, principal artist, format and label. It also enable the entry of song titles and composers, track times, performance dates, and all participating personnel and their roles.
The software is geared to collectors that want accurate details regarding their collection and the ability to lookup information based on these details. Want to see all the tracks in your collection where a certain artist appears? BC will handle that. Want to see all the tracks by a certain composer? BC will handle that.
Beyond Category is now able to import albums from Discogs.com. While crowd sourced data is not always accurate, importing it will save data entry time and can be easily edited after import to make any necessary corrections.
Beyond Category is named with a nod towards Duke Ellington, who truly is beyond category. Download the software right here.
BRIAN Discography Software
BRIAN is a relational data base application that I wrote to compile discographies. It is downloadable from the web at JazzDiscography.com and runs on Windows and Macintosh computers. Find out more about how you too can become obsessed with sessions, songs and sidemen! Download the software at JazzDiscography.com.
JazzDiscography.com
Michael Fitzgerald and I decided to collaborate on a website that would extol the virtues of BRIAN. JazzDiscography.com hosts the latest version of BRIAN available for download. We also host and link to hundreds of discographies that have been created using BRIAN. We hope we have accounted for all of them – if not, let us know!
