My vision for science communication
Science communication is becoming an essential part of science, and I agree that both science and society will benefit from more openness and dialogue.
However, science communication, or scicom for short, is hard. It’s artisanal: you can study the theory, but in the end you need to practise it to become better at it. I want to bring unique and fitting solutions to every scicom case, and combine theory and practise to make science communication more effective.
My grand vision is that theory and practise in science communication should learn more from each other. Therefore, my work also aims at bringing the field together, and at helping researchers with scicom strategies, products or trainings.

16 years of broadening experience
My professional career in science communication started after graduating as a biologist in 2008. In the years since, I’ve developed myself in many directions. I started out in science museums and science journalism, and spent a few years bringing science to various audiences through festivals, TV-shows and books.
In 2012 I co-founded The Online Scientist with Liesbeth Smit to help scientists directly with their communication. I love chatting to and learning from researchers, and I enjoy providing them with websites, e-learning, presentations and even orations. I developed myself into a sparring partner that can bring the scicom perspective to consortia, grant proposals or events.

Broad experience in science communication helps me to come up with solutions for any situation
Shaping the field of scicom
The longer I’ve worked in science communication, the more I’ve been able to shape the field. I have acted as expert evaluator for an EU subsidy program, given trainings, talks and guest lectures, crafted strategy for academic institutions and fed policy and governmental developments in scicom as co-chair of SciCom NL.
It’s been my goal to let theory and practice in scicom benefit from each other. This got me into several European projects, and allowed me to be co-author of scientific papers. I’m now also pursuing a PhD in science communication.

Workshops on science communication
Do you want to learn more about science communication? Have a look at our workshops! Through The Online Scientist, I’ve given over 100 sessions for thousands of researchers in various disciplines, from research institutes in Spain to graduate schools in Norway. Sometimes the audience was 3, other times hundreds. Sometimes the topic was storytelling, other times it was the relationship between science and the media.
I can adapt the content of my trainings to your needs, so have a look at all our workshops on the website of The Online Scientist.

How can I help you with your science communication?

Advice & consultancy
As a sparring partner I can bring the scicom perspective to your lab or organization. Do you need a plan for your consortium, grant proposal or event?
Or do you want a well-written interview or some input to make a lasting impression with your next presentation or oration? Get in touch to see how I can help.

Books about scicom
I’ve written a few books during my career. My first few books are popular science books on biology and health.
As I developed myself as an authority in the field of science communication, I wrote a series of e-books on various subtopics, as well as some blogs with my vision for the field.

Keynote on biology
I still really enjoy biology, and how it can provide a mirror for us. I always try to connect the dots in what I see, read and experience in and about nature.
My talks about this are informal and engaging, yet thought-provoking. You can book me for a keynote through Speaker’s Academy.
