Conversations Outside the Algorithm: Meghan Murphy
Submit your questions for the writer and podcaster who became one of Canada's most cancelled women
Meghan Murphy, Canadian writer, journalist, and founder of Feminist Current, is being interviewed on Beyond Gender today. After building one of the most prominent feminist platforms in Canada since 2012, she became one of the first high-profile figures permanently banned from Twitter in November 2018 for stating “men aren’t women.” Her account was restored on November 20, 2022, following Elon Musk’s takeover.
Murphy holds an MA in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies from Simon Fraser University. Though she long identified as a socialist and a feminist, she has said she began moving away from these labels around 2017, opting for independent thought and open conversation instead. She hosts The Same Drugs, a podcast featuring conversations on culture, politics, and free speech.
Murphy has been a vocal critic of gender identity ideology, arguing it undermines women’s sex-based rights. She testified at the Canadian Senate against Bill C-16 in 2017 and spoke at the Scottish Parliament in 2019 on the impact of gender identity legislation. In the 2025 Canadian federal election, she ran as a candidate for the People’s Party of Canada in Vancouver East. She left Canada in 2021 and is now based in Mexico.
