CHARACTER NAME: Fuyumine Naoto [DOGS]

AGE: Unknown, but appears to be in her late teens to early twenties (roughly 18-21...ish)

BIRTHDATE: Also unknown (but if you really need one, I’ll make one up?!)

PB NAME: N/A

FACTION: Just plain neutral! Naoto has her own agenda and thinks both factions have caused enough trouble as it is.

ABILITIES: Being human and all, she has no extra-special abilities. She is, however, highly skilled with a sword and can more than hold her own when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. She was trained to fight from an early age and has learned how to improvise in almost any situation (so don’t be too surprised if you shoot at her and she suddenly flips over your head to evade the bullets).

PERSONALITY: A pretty face, nice legs, and a temperament that’s far from overbearing. But assume that’s all there is to her and find yourself facing down a katana. Despite her looks, Naoto is first and foremost a fighter. She’s more comfortable in battle or information-gathering than she is with flirting and/or any type of social interaction. Press her too much or underestimate her and she’ll be more than happy to show you the error of your ways (you may be missing a few fingers when she’s done, but you’ll be wiser). She doesn't tolerate disrespect.

Because of her utter fail at interaction, Naoto tends to come off as cold and impersonal, far too serious for her own good, and someone who’d rather do everything on her own—which is more or less true, but she actually has a softer side and has been known to protect those who are incapable of defending themselves or help out in a fight where she’s needed. It's not impossible to see her smile, just rare. She also has a bit of a temper and is VERY stubborn and persistent. Once she sinks her teeth into something, she’ll hang on until the very end. You challenge her, she won’t back down, and will instead rise to that challenge to the best of her ability. That’s just how she is.

Revenge is the driving force behind most of her actions; she harbors a bitterness dating back to her childhood and has lived her life hating a person she doesn’t remember, so you can imagine what that would do to her personality. As far as Naoto’s concerned, she’s only half a person as it is until she gets things taken fully care of.

HISTORY: A native of Japan, one certain little girl had a pretty normal and happy childhood with two loving parents, who were also scientists for The Sphere. They kept this a secret from their daughter, though, preferring to keep her innocent about such serious matters for as long as they could.

And, well, that definitely didn’t last long. When there weren’t enough volunteers (or dead bodies) for soldiers, The Sphere started trying to find potential candidates among the families of their workers. The afore-mentioned girl was one of them; the child of two highly intelligent and talented scientists was bound to be a successful guinea pig and if they trained her from an early age, she’d be a force to be reckoned with when she was older. Once her parents (already uneasy from some of the more dire methods both factions were taking) found out, that was the final straw. They panicked and left The Sphere, planning to take their daughter with them that very night and find a safer place for their family. But somebody at The Sphere was on to them, and that very same somebody was the one who followed them that night, fully intending to make them pay for deserting their faction. And pay they did—with their lives. Both of her parents were cut down with a katana, and their daughter along with them, left to die with a deep X carved into her chest. She couldn’t have been more than seven or eight years old.

Things didn’t quite turned out as planned and she was soon found and saved by a mysterious man carrying the same kind of sword as the murderer.

Because of the traumatic experience of being cut, the girl had forgotten her parents’ faces and names, her own name and age, and everything before that fateful night. All she remembered was that blade and all she had was an X-shaped scar.

The man, Fuyumine, named her Naoto and taught her how to fight with a blade, coaxing out her grief and anger and turning it into hatred towards the one who had ruined her life (who she thought was him, an idea he never discouraged). So she grew up and grew stronger, despite certain instances causing lingering doubts about the man who had saved her life.

A few years after one certain incident, she came home to discover that Fuyumine had been killed by Magato (his student). Furious, she attacked him and managed to win after a fierce fight. As a reward, Magato told her that the real murderer was also named Naoto and they carried a blade like Fuyumine’s. He gave the katana to her and then disappeared from her life with a cryptic remark about fate allowing them to meet again (despite how seriously she’d injured him).

After a few minutes of grief, Naoto got her act together and left, taking Fuyumine’s coat, katana, and his name with her. Her new goal was to find the true killer and to get back what had been stolen from her. Of course, with a war going on, such a thing wasn’t exactly easy and she had to lay low for awhile, but during the past year after the stalemate was declared, she’s started to move again, on a quest for any information about this other Naoto while trying to keep herself alive long enough to find out the truth.

WRITING SAMPLE: Another day, another fruitless search.

Naoto drew her legs closer to her body with a shiver, gazing out over the ruin that could have been called a city once. It seemed more like a mess now, with buildings sagging wearily to the side, the sidewalks cracked and warped, and the people... well, so many had been lost to the coma that the place had become something of a ghost town.

It was somewhat appropriate, she couldn’t help thinking, one hand resting on the sheathed katana propped against her shoulder. A shadow of a girl living in a shadow of a city. Truthfully, she wasn’t even sure which had the better chance of ever becoming whole again, but the odds for both seemed pretty unlikely. She didn’t know just how many years had passed since that night, but she hadn’t even been able to recall something as simple as her birthday or what her favorite food had been as a kid. She still didn’t know why her parents had been running, couldn’t recall their faces, and years of struggling to remember hadn’t done a thing to help.

She was still Naoto. Why Fuyumine had branded her with the killer’s name was something she couldn’t even begin to comprehend and dwelling on it too long only gave her a migraine. Thinking about it wouldn’t accomplish anything. Come tomorrow, she’d be out there again, searching for a past she’d forgotten and the person who had ripped it away.

Although maybe this time she wouldn’t have to deal with yet another lecherous idiot trying to exchange information for sexual favors. It was beginning to grow tiresome and there were only so many appendages she could cut off before they caught on-- or died from blood loss. Either way, it was one less pain to deal with.

Sighing softly, Naoto tilted her head up and gazed at the sky from her perch on the roof. She studied it in silence for a few minutes, then gave her head a shake.

“Huh,” she muttered, pushing one hand through her short black hair and giving her scarf a little tug to tighten it. “You can’t see the stars tonight, either.”
