Building on our experience in California’s Eastern Sierra, Stayner Architects is currently designing a Transit Operations Facility at the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport.This multi-modal facility (bus, plane/helicopter, auto, bike, and pedestrian) will meet the growing transportation needs of one

of the largest ridership areas in the state, stretching from Reno, Nevada to Lancaster, in Los Angeles County.

Transit Hub Courtyard


The new office and dispatch center consolidates administration and drivers into a single, purpose-built facility adjacent to the bus yard, while communicating the Agency’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The orientation of the project supports oversight of the bus yard and views of the airport runway and surrounding landscape, while also providing an open courtyard to the employees and visitors.

Early iteration using local vegetation for project color palette.


We implemented passive heating and cooling, optimized solar energy production, and reduced electricity usage. Mass timber construction will be used for a quicker construction timeline and for fire resistance. Stayner Architects is working with the landscape architect to foster fire-resistant planting design, to support the capture and reuse of water, and to create a garden of native plants. The building seeks to coexist rather than stand out from the landscape.

Chautauqua Residence, named after the
movement that brought rural communities together with arts and culture under a “big tent,” takes a familiar gable form and reinterprets it in dowel-laminated mass timber (DLT) and stone cladding, following the site’s topography to create views and privacy while tempering the building scale.
The design reduces the CO2 footprint by using carbon-neutral materials such as mass timber and domestic quarried limestone. Fire-resistant strategies, including careful selection of plant material, create a resilient home suited to the region’s future climatic challenges.

Utilizing mass timber reduces construction timelines and labor costs


Beyond its fire-resistant properties, mass timber provides several advantages. Prefabrication of the panels will increase the speed of construction and reduce labor costs for the project, allowing the design to achieve competitive building costs. Mass timber will also reduce the cost of site work on the rugged terrain, reducing overall foundations due to reduced building weight.
The plan is organized as a series of layers mirrored along a central axis. A stone rain screen wraps around the exterior walls and roof, providing a protective outer shell for the exposed CLT interior, which shelters a small courtyard garden at its center. Large openings framing views of the site can be closed down through various pivoting architectural metalwork shutters and awnings. Inside, timber is left exposed; select rooms receive natural limestone plaster and mineral paints.

Stitching together a resilient future

The Woven Campus reimagines State Tax University’s war-torn campus as a unified, resilient institution. In the aftermath of war, the campus is reconnected through a new central hub that links two surviving buildings, serving as both a physical bridge and a symbolic gathering point for students, faculty, and the wider community.

Threading the Needle between Campus, City, and Country

A looping, single-story mass timber roof structure stitches the campus together, organizing a network of indoor and outdoor spaces around a central promenade. This flexible infrastructure supports university programming, energy systems, and future expansion. Designed with universal accessibility at its core, the campus prioritizes inclusivity for returning veterans and individuals with diverse mobility needs.

Tied to Tradition

Rooted in Ukrainian heritage, the design reinterprets vernacular elements—gabled roofs, wooden joinery, and decorative patterns—into modern architectural forms. Motifs drawn from traditional embroidery (vyshyvanka) and the krayaka belt are subtly woven into the building details and facade, affirming the cultural identity symbolizing resilience and continuity in the face of disruption.

Rooted in Resilience

Constructed from sustainably sourced Ukrainian timber, the project contributes to environmental restoration and supports local industries. This regenerative approach not only addresses the physical reconstruction of the campus, but also fosters long-term ecological and economic resilience for the region. The result is a design that gracefully weaves together past and future, tradition and innovation, shelter and identity.

The Aldama Residence is a four-story single-family home sited on a steep hillside lot in Highland Park. Building on the site at all required applying for a variance from the city, adding a legislative challenge to a project that has required innovative approaches to structure, material, and tectonics. Developed according to a nine-square grid, a plan type with a long, trans-historical disciplinary lineage, the Aldama Residence takes the ideal plan diagram as a jumping-off point for the recombination of discrete interior units of domestic space per level, and vertically through the house’s four stories.

Located on the ground floor of a former LADWP building near USC, the new location for the dublab headquarters set out to produce a new physical space for the digital community that dublab has cultivated. In approaching the design, Stayner Architects wanted to focus the design on the broadcasting studios, the core of dublab’s ethos. Wanting to highlight the studio, the concept centered around a building within a building, where dj’s, staff, and visitors are constantly moving around the studio as an object in the space.

Materially, the project encouraged the use of Mass Plywood Panel, an emerging material which Stayner Architects has begun investing development in. Mass Ply Panel is beneficial through its structural properties in addition to reduction of assembly time as opposed to traditional framed construction. Mass Plywood Panel also allows for the panels to be disassembled and reassembled giving the materials a longer lifespan as opposed to other forms of construction.

The interior build out regulates the flow of sound within the studio. While the Mass Plywood Panels keep noise from leaving the interior, a wall assembly using a combination of plywood slats, mineral wool insulation and fabric help absorb sound to keep the reverberation to a minimum.

Bacetti Restaurant occupies one unit in our larger Echo Park Avenue development, along with Tilda Wine Bar.&#38;nbsp;The development was conceived as an intimate set of interconnected businesses, which are inserted into the already-bustling commercial-residential fabric of Echo Park. Small-scale, independent businesses are the core of Echo Park, an exemplar in Los Angeles as a neighborhood of mixed-uses and diverse ownerships.&#38;nbsp;

Bacetti’s focus is on rustic, Roman-style food, including a full menu for sit-down meals in addition to a walk-up counter for coffee and espresso. With these two uses in mind—the everyday, quick stop, and the more leisurely meal—we used Bacetti’s generous footprint to our advantage, dividing circulation paths for fast and slow visits, while maintaining visual access, amplifying the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere as well as its ease-of-use.

Bacetti Interior Details

We’ve developed three-axis CNC techniques in-house to fabricate Bacetti’s custom terrazzo counters, which we now make for other projects at our Glendale Blvd. production site. With an in-house mill now up and running, what was initially a project-specific material and budgetary challenge has become the impetus to take on new design opportunities at a variety of scales. We’re now working on a new set of material and finish palettes, using traditional CNC applications in novel ways on ceramic, wood, and stone.

Deep Springs College, 

located on the outskirts of Death Valley National Park near Big Pine, California, was founded in 1917 as a tuition-free liberal arts institution on a working cattle ranch. Students participate in classes while at the same time dedicating themselves to land stewardship, sustainable agriculture, and facilities engineering and maintenance. Recently gaining their organic certification and welcoming their first co-educational class, Deep Springs has embraced a 21st century manifestation of their radically progressive foundation.

We are working concurrently on two projects for Deep Springs College: the Boarding House, which includes kitchen and dining facilities, and the Faculty Residence Triplex. The campus’ buildings have been constructed in phases, but they are all generally low-rise, and sit in a loose arrangement along with interior roads, fields, and the desert valley topography. The new “Boarding House” will replace the exisiting structure dating from the college’s founding, and has been designed to navigate simultaneously Deep Springs’ rich institutional history and its ongoing evolution as a paragon among innovative educational organizations.

The project for Deep Springs’ 6,000 SF “Boarding House” includes interconnected facilities that support a wide array of activities, corresponding to the set of jobs that each student will rotate through over the course of his or her two years at Deep Springs, including but not limited to: gardener, butcher, dishwasher, cook, baker, rancher, groom. The building is designed as a joined pair: one half of the new overall volume is the kitchen facility, while the other half, an open dining hall punctured by skylights, bends away, reinforcing the heterogeneity of the site’s assemblage of buildings. The intersection between the two halves negotiates the two orientations and in its plasticity introduces its own new formal language to the campus.

Fewer than fifty students, faculty, and administrators live at Deep Springs at any given time. Set between the White and the Inyo mountain ranges, the college’s physical isolation in one of California’s most extreme environments makes the infrastructure of its self-sustainability especially crucial to its survival. In the 1980s and again in the early 2000s, Deep Springs invested in its energy infrastructure, building a hydroelectric power station and later a solar array, strengthening its operational micro-environment for a new generation of occupants and a new era of climate instability.

The landscapes surrounding Deep Springs College are hybrids, both wild and cultivated; in the early phases of design for the new Triplex Faculty Residence, we worked with faculty, administration, and students to learn the methods by which Deep Springs residents support the delicate calibration of their open campus’ various micro-environments, from garden to grazing pasture.&#38;nbsp;

The new Faculty Triplex is sited apart from the main campus buildings and academic quad, backed by agricultural fields and the White Mountains beyond, and straddles the two poles of the Deep Springs experience: near-monastic individual reflection, and intensive physical and intellectual collaboration.

The Deep Springs College campus offers both isolation in a sublime expanse of desert, and membership in a close-knit community of residents formed seasonally through shared labor, intellectual engagement, and cooperative self-governance. With this in mind, we designed the Faculty Triplex as a series of individual apartments set in a continuous gathering space -- the residential spaces are surrounded by an open, covered deck, that gives 360 degree views of the landscape while providing enough space for circulation.

There is no tenure at Deep Springs, and by extension there are no permanent residents on the campus. Faculty apply to teach at Deep Springs and are evaluated by a board made up of current students, faculty, and administrators; if accepted, they live on the Deep Springs Campus for up to six years, though often for much shorter periods of time. Since its founding, Deep Springs has been intended as a discrete, though deeply formative, experience, set apart from the rest of the world and with its own rules, regulations, and everyday activities and patterns.
