So instead of the obligatory 'here's a picspam of everything that happened to me in 2013' I decided to change it up a bit and talk about five of my favorite things from 2013: a book, a movie, a TV show, a TV moment and a song. It still has pictures but it's really 'Becky's best!ofthebest™

book of the year

My Family and Other Animals by Clare Balding
If you don't know who Clare Balding is then you really should. Clare Balding is like England's darling. Initially it was 'is this just going to be a horsey thing?' But this book is so much more than a horsey thing. Clare is the daughter of Derby-winning trainer, Ian Balding, sister of Andrew Balding (who we currently have horses with) and Channel 4 racing coverage's lead anchor. But Clare is so much more than that. She was the BBC's principal host at London 2012. And the best thing about Clare? She's a girl. Who loves another girl. And everyone accepts her and loves her for it. She's done more for gay rights in this country than... anyone. Because she's so normal and everyone loves her. Because of her I feel more comfortable telling people 'Hey, I'm a normal girl but I like girls too.' Just like Clare. I actually got this book for my birthday back in January and read it in three days (for a slow reader, that's good!) It's funny, heart-warming, touching, real, raw and just... true. It is an accurate picture of what growing up in a family married to horse racing is really like. Even if you have zero interest in horse racing, I guarantee you will love this book. We're very lucky as a family, as my family to have associations with the Baldings. Whenever we go to Kingsclere to visit the horses I cannot tell you how welcome they make us feel or what a magical and special place it is (you can feel the spirit of the great Mill Reef still permeating the stables.) Clare is always there when we visit but she never steps into the spotlight and says 'I'm the star!!' (which she is) and she is the genuinely lovely person you see on TV. So go out and buy this book. I guarantee you won't regret it. This covers her years from birth to twenty (each chapter is named after a pet she had at the time) so I'm hoping one day there might be a sequel.

movie of the year

Monsters University
I didn't get Monsters Inc... at all. Sure, I thought Mike and Sully were cool but I didn't get the hype. Maybe it was Boo, I don't know. At best I thought Monsters Inc was a supremely average movie. But I was intrigued by the concept of Monsters University. And yes, it's one of those occassions where the sequel/prequel was better than the original. The coloring was gorgeous, simply breathtaking. It was so vivid. It looks gorgeous on blu-ray. I loved the storyline, I loved the message.

TV show of the year

Hostages
I don't know why no-one watches this show. Initially, I thought it sounded cool but was sceptical. How could this is sustainable? And OK, I do think it's a victim of it's own storyline. This was probably not going to run for three years, these people being well... Hostages (but hey, it didn't hurt Homeland, right?) It's intricate. It's shocking. It's just as gripping as 24. The cast is stellar. You care about every single character. I know ABC has canned it, but give it a chance (the ABC player has a free 'catch-up' until new episodes air.) And I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

TV moment of the year

Nashville 01.09: Be Careful of Stones That You Throw
I don't want to spoil anyone so I will be discreet in what I say. Again, this is another one from January. I thought the ending to this episode was magical. This image, of Juliette getting out of the car in her wedding dress and the aftermath of this was just awesome. And the music... and Rayna leaving on tour at the same time. Just great. Again, Nashville is a show that is so underrated but everyone in my family enjoys it. Again, if you haven't seen it it's really worth a try... it's not all country music you know!

Honorable mention: Hostages 01.07: Hail Mary

Katy Perry- Roar
I think 2013 is the year Katy was queen. I always liked her music, but I think in the whole roar vs. applause thing she really established herself as the reigning queen of pop (and honestly, who doesn't like pop?) Gaga is firmly on the way down now (and I previously loved her) I thought this was one of the best songs I'd heard in years. Catchy. Strong. Great message. One of my most played in itunes.
