New Zealand 2011 Earthquake Relief Appeal

Hey guys, Fei here!

I don't know how many of you have heard about this, but yesterday Christchurch - the city in New Zealand where Anne lives - was hit with an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale. She's okay, but there are many people in the city and country at large who have been severely affected by this disaster. The official death toll currently stands at 75 and is expected to rise, with literally hundreds of people still missing and trapped. The city centre has been totally flattened and is going to have to be entirely rebuilt. More information can be found here and in other articles on that site.

So, the purpose of this post is threefold!

First off, there is a comment over here on the latest news here where a whole bunch of people are commenting to ask LJ if they can set up a Vgift donation scheme like they have in the past in similar situation. Please comment, and spread the word!

Secondly, if you would like to donate something directly, the New Zealand Red Cross has set up a donation form where you can give anything from $5 NZD (about $3.50 USD) up. Every little bit helps!

Thirdly, please spread the word about what has happened, and how people can help. Plurk, Facebook, Livejournal, The Internet In General and talking to friends and family are all possible avenues that you can take, and the more people who know about it, the more people can help out. At the moment, we really want to get LJ in on this, so if you could promote the comment on the news post in particular, that would be great. That comment also has links to articles about the disaster and to the Red Cross, so all the information is in one place.

Please don't feel obligated to donate or anything like that! I just want to get the word out to as many as people as possible.

Game News + Event!

Hi, Squarewartians!

The mods have come to a decision on the future of the game! Starting February 1, the game will be converted into a sort of musebox/dressing room where you guys can play out whatever you want in the setting, without any modly meddling. Fei and Icky will still be maintaining the comms to grant access to new journals, but applications, reserves, activity check and the like will be no more. The comms will be primarily for current players, but old players who would like to come back, and those that can be vouched for as not jerks are welcome!

But! All's not over and done with just yet! For our last official squarewarts event, we'll be fast forwarding ten years into the future! Your students have graduated; they're Quidditch stars, government officials, Aurors, or perhaps they're professors now themselves! Your professors have stayed to teach new generations of witches and wizards, or they've moved on to something new! The choice is yours!

One morning, each character will find an owl perched somewhere, staring down at them as they awake. In the owl's beak, a fancy envelope, with elegant gold embossed text on the front, spelling out their name. When the letter is opened, confetti (their House colors, of course!) flies out, and the Hogwarts school song begins to play:

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald,
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling,
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.

As the song finishes, the confetti swirls through the air, coming together to form a lovely bit of parchment, on which the following appears:

As soon as they finish reading the letter, an RSVP form will appear, and the owl will look expectant, perhaps pecking those reluctant to respond. Whether they are inclined to attend celebrations or not, each character will find themselves compelled to fill it out in the affirmative, and send it off with the owl. It seems the Headmaster and Headmistress really want to catch up with everyone!

Important Event Note: For this event, players can bring in any past characters they have played, if they choose to! Old players may also join in on the fun. No re-apping necessary!

You may also use this post as a planning post! Talk to those your characters have close CR with, plan out the ten years between now and the event! GO WILD.

SUPER IMPORTANT MOD NOTE PLEASE READ

Hey Squarewartians!

Your mods have been discussing a few things over the past couple of weeks, about the game and our position as mods, and we’ve come to a couple of decisions that y’all should know about.

Basically, we have both been modding for a long time now and while we both love the game, Real Life is kicking our asses, and we’ve sort of burnt ourselves out on it to the point where neither one of us can see ourselves staying on as a mod for much longer. So it is that we’d like to ask the comm if there’s anyone who would be willing to step up and become a full time moderator of squarewarts , in place of us. We’d need at least two players to step, and you’d have to be prepared to fully take on the running of the game, so please don’t offer if you’re not going to have the time or energy to deal with being in charge of a medium sized/paced game.

If no one (or not enough people) would like to take that position, the two of us have decided to turn the game into a private game/musebox earlier than planned. Applications would close, but Activity Check , Character Limits and Permissions would be lifted, and you would be able to play out your characters in the world as you wished. The communities would remain locked, but if you wanted to add a new journal feilyn would be staying on as maintainer for the sole purpose of accepting whatever journal you wanted to the comms.

These weren’t easy decisions to come to by any means, but please understand that this is what we feel would be best for the game, and best for us personally. We love you all, and thank you so much for making squarewarts such a wonderful place to be for the past two and a half years.

If you are interested in becoming a mod, please reply to this entry with a little blurb about why; comments will be screened, and we'll let everyone know what's going down in a week.

EVENT MOD POST YEY

Hail Squarewartians!

In celebration of the New Year, we are going to be having an ~*Event*~ Surprise! We’re not going to tell you what it is, but it is going to involve a tradition that we just made up where characters write a wish for the new year on a piece of paper and hang it on the Wishing Tree, which will be happening in game at the end of the New Year’s Feast. In order to assist with this event, we’d like you to write your character’s wish (what they would write on their paper ICly) and also their deepest desire (which will not be written ICly) in response to this entry, and we’ll get back to you once the event begins. If it turns out the event is not to your tastes, however, fear not! Replying to this post doesn’t mean that participating is compulsory or anything, if you reply and then decide you’d rather not participate, you can just ignore it ♥

IMPORTANT MOD POST YEY

Hi, Squarewartians! You might have noticed there have been a few changes around the place lately! Namely there are two mods and one of them has been failing horribly at posting the weekly newsletter. In order to spread the NPCing out more evenly and give Edea more to do, we've decided that she and Cid will be co-Heading the school together. So Edea's come back from all the investigations of Ultimecia's attack on Hogwarts, and it was decided that her actions were totally bamf and saved everyone, so she should help Cid run the school. She has lots of experience with children, what with running The Garden and all, so she will be a nice and gentle addition. Since Hogwarts seems to value having a male and female for most positions, it feels right that they'd have one of each as Head of the school, too.

In addition to this, it's time to say goodbye to the Board. In the end, the plot we had in mind for the game really wasn't suitable for something that had been brought in right in the middle - it really needed to be started from the beginning. As for in-character reasoning, the Board was there to figure out what was causing all the unexplainable weirdness earlier in the year, and since Ultimecia's defeat, the weirdness has been normal Hogwarts shenanigans, not worth keeping them around for, so they're off to continue working in the Ministry and keeping an eye on school things from afar. In lieu of having one overarching plot, however, we're thinking of doing more sort of mini-arc events until game end, like with the Ultimecia attack, and getting the players involved more. And speaking of game end, we've had a really great run here at Squarewarts, but all good things must come to an end (;A;!), and at this point our tentative end game date is in early April, with the endgame event lasting through until the beginning of May, after which the game will remain as a musebox for those players who stayed through until endgame.

So, keeping that in mind, the two of us would like to know - what do you want to see more of in the game? We want to make these last few months as \m/ totally awesome \m/ as possible, in particular endgame, so if there are things you would like to see, either in said months leading up to, or inthe actual end game event, drop us a note! Either here or in the Suggestions Box is great ♥

Due to unforeseen circumstances in a literature class tutoring session, characters throughout the school will find their actions and thoughts suddenly narrated - out loud, for everyone to hear - in a voice of your choice. For example, you might have Morgan Freeman telling the world that your character just got up and started to brush their teeth or GLaDOS being a passive-aggressive jerk as they try to eat their cake (which is a lie). Go crazy!

Yeah.

Basically what it says on the label, darlings! Some kid was practising the Tarantellegra charm when it all went horribly wrong, and now all day Tuesday people have been breaking out into uncontrollable dance numbers at various points in the day without warning. It can be any style - hip hop, ballroom, contemporary, jazz, funky chicken, whatever! Go crazy!

Link to one instance of activity per period per character. The activity periods for this AC are October 1 - October 15 and October 16 - October 31.

Acceptable methods of passing an activity period are as follows:

TROLL IN THE DUNGEON

And in the kitchens, the Great Hall, the ballroom, the grounds...you get the picture. Hogwarts has been overrun by trolls from the Forbidden Forest, and while they're not attacking, they are very stupid, easily frustrated and likely to destroy things. Cid's told the students to stay out of it and let the staff handle things, but when was the last time anyone ever listened to Cid? Go crazy!

To make things more interesting, while everyone was at the Ball, Cid had the moombas set up various lighthearted 'trick or treat' spells around the school. Some of them give you candy, other will give you a pie to the face, or honey and goose feathers - the sort of harmless prank that is even kind of funny under normal cirsumstances, but when there are angry trolls on the loose, is just annoying. Feel free to make up these as you log; they can affect anyone, including the trolls.

As a final note, there will be an NPC troll journal wandering around, but you are of course welcome to just godmod the trolls yourself. They're everywhere! As per usual, you can use this post as a planning post, and if you have any questions feels free to email us at squarewarts@gmail.com

Hey Squarewartians!

This is just Adri in an exciting new journal! And with this journal, I bring news.
Due to RL commitments I'm stepping down from my position as a moderator in the game. However, I am going to be a helper, which means I will be doing the crack memes, monthly memes and wiki maintenance under the glorious title of Helper Cactuar. (Not that they are especially helpful in any of the FF games I have played thus far :|a)
