When Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) founded Spring Branch Educators Credit Union in 1954, district leaders had no idea it would grow into First Community Credit Union (FCCU), a full-service, high-tech, high-touch financial institution that serves more than 175,000 members across 41 Texas counties.

Despite its rapid growth, FCCU has remained deeply committed to the district where it all started, serving as one of SBISD’s Good Neighbors.

“Community is in our name, and giving back is a passion for us,” said Jennifer Kilgore, executive vice president and chief operating officer of FCCU. “Education is especially meaningful because SBISD founded us, and that connection continues to inspire the credit union’s ongoing investment in students, educators and families.”

As a Good Neighbor, FCCU has funded scholarships, supported recognition programs and districtwide initiatives. One such example is support for the Spring Branch Education Foundation (SBEF) Bright Stars scholarship program, which has helped hundreds of students take the next step in their educational journeys. FCCU has been a presenting sponsor for the past three years.

Equally important is the credit union’s support of the district’s Teacher of the Year recognition, which shines a spotlight on the dedication and selflessness of SBISD educators. FCCU has also been a long-time contributing sponsor to the J. Landon Short Mini-Grants for Education program, underwriting one of the grants each year.

FCCU’s commitment reflects more than financial support; it embodies the credit union’s belief in the transformative power of education. Over the years, the credit union has seen how families and futures have been impacted by the district’s commitment to ensuring that Every Child has the tools and resources to succeed.

This is why it launched the First Community Cares Foundation in 2021, allowing the organization to further its support for education endeavors throughout the district, as well as programs across the greater community.

As a contributor, FCCU is proud to have a representative on the SBEF board, helping guide initiatives and programs for the district. An FCCU leader also serves as a business partner representative on the SBISD District Improvement Team (DIT). The credit union also supports continual learning by championing education both inside and outside the classroom, including financial literacy, which equips students for lifelong success.

Looking ahead, FCCU plans to support SBISD by exploring new initiatives where it can genuinely make a difference. Its hope for the future is simple: that more people see the incredible impact of SBISD and that the district’s reach continues to grow, strengthening the community for generations to come.

“We believe our collaboration with SBISD is a responsibility—one rooted in history and driven by the belief that when students are confident, empowered and supported, the entire community thrives,” said Kilgore.
