They are my old icons. Like 4 years old or so. I see now some of them over-saturated, some of them is blurred and some of them is over-sharpened but these were the first icons I studied on :))
These and many tutorials helped me create my own colorings and definitely helped me to see the importance of making icons :)

Comic Con 2011 Nerd HQ Photos

I have gathered the photos from the Nerd HQ at Comic Con 2011

Featuring many actors and actresses and of course Zachary LEVI from Chuck.

They were loading fast, I tried to save the most interesting ones,
because there are bazillions of them, mainly captured as photo ops with fans,
but Zach's face is a must to see on those weird and cute ones ;D

2 Supernatural icon tutorials /Done in PS7

ICON TUTORIAL #01:

Crop your image
Duplicate base image>>image>>adjustments>>auto contrast>>set opacity 71%
Duplicate base (bottom) image>>image>>adjustments>>auto levels>>set opacity 51%
Duplicate base (bottom) image>>set to screen opacity 100%
Go to layer>>merge visible

Layer>>new fill layer>>exclusion #3D0000 opacity 100%
Duplicate base>>bring it top>>set to soflight opacity 100%

Layer>>new adjustment layer>>selective color

Reds:
cyan -79

Yellows:
cyan -46

Cyans:
cyan +100

Neutrals:
cyan +27

(This step is optional)
After hitting OK, if you feel like Sam's face is too yellow, ctrl+click the layer mask thumbnail
on the selective color layer (the white square)
Then choose a small size air brush, set opacity 50% and brush Sam's face with it.
This will reduce 50% the yellow tint on Sam's face. But be sure that foreground color is black.

When you're working on masked layers, if you brush them with black as the foreground color,
it will make the changes invisible on that layer. For example you made a selective color layer but
when it's done you didn't like the color balance on Sam's face. It looked so yellow. So click selective color layer,
choose black as the foreground color and brush his face with it.
As a result the selective color layer will not be visible on Sam's face.

Make a new selective color layer;

Reds:
cyan -12

Yellows:
yellow +21

Cyans:
cyan +100

Hit OK, go to Layer>>Merge Visible and you're done.

ICON TUTORIAL #02:

image>>adjustments>>auto levels
duplicate layer>>blur where that seems necessary(forehead, cheeks) opacity 40%
layer>>merge visible

layer>>new fill layer>>exclusion #351B00
duplicate base layer>>hold click and bring it top>>set it softlight opacity 100%

layer>>new adjustment layer>>selective color

Reds:
cyan -100

Yellows:
cyan -42

Cyans:
cyan +87

Neutrals:
cyan +23

Layer>>new fill layer>>multiply #FFEDD9

Layer>>Merge Visible and you're done.

The idea of increasing the cyans on Neutrals is bringing back the colors of Dean's jacket.
Because it's not bright enough when you just increase cyan on Cyans.
So when you increase cyan on Neutrals, you also need to keep and save the color balance
of the picture,
so you should reduce cyan on Reds and Yellows. Because they are the main colors of the pic.

If you don't wanna deal with too much selective coloring, you can always use fill layers for to
achive the similar result.

For example if you feel like Dean's face is too pale, you can fix it by two ways.
First one is adding a selective color layer; You can try to add more yellow and red by reducing cyan
on Reds and increasing yellow on Yellows section. But you always need to save the balance of
the main pic. So don't go near edges. Unless your icon may seem pixellated.
Second way is adding a multiply fill layer. Choose a very light yellow-orange to do this.

Tutorial #01 - Pushing Daisies - made in PS7

Hi all. This will be my first tutorial ever.
Finally I've made my decision which icon to write a tutorial for ^__^
Hope this could be useful for you!

Here we go;

First we have to pick a picture; it shouldn't be very dark but not also very light.
I chose this one from my latest favorite TV show;

I usually play on the picture before cropping it.
For this picture, first I duplicated the base and set it to screen.
Then Layer >> Merge Visible.

Duplicate the base again and zoom in a bit, then select your Blur Tool.
Strength about 40.
Choose a soft round brush and blur the areas on her face you dislike.
But don't touch the eyes and lips!

Then select Burn Tool, choose midtones,
don't touch the exposure and burn the shadowed areas as you like.

Then select Dodge Tool, choose highlights,
don't touch the exposure and dodge the light shiny spots in her eyes.
You can use both a soft round or hard round brush,
keep it 3 or 5 px according to the spot size.

Then Layer >> Merge Visible.

Now we can crop it as we like.
Choose your crop tool, type 100 px to each box at left top.
Resouliton is 72 px/inch

After cropping the image,
add a new colorfill layer,
fill with #571F1F, set it to exclusion

Then right click and duplicate your base,
bring it to the top and set to soft light.

Now it's time to add some colors to the icon;
Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Color (keep it normal)

Now I wanna increase the reds and magentas on her hair
and reduce the shininess on her face.
So here are my numbers;

REDS;
Cyan: -82
Magenta: +27
Yellow: +24
Black: 0

YELLOWS;
Cyan: 0
Magenta: -20
Yellow: +26
Black: 0

CYANS;
Cyan: +100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: -100
Black: 0

BLUES;
Cyan: +100
Magenta: -100
Blue: -100
Black: 0
(if you want your cyan-blue colors shine on the icon;
always try using selective coloring.
Hue/Saturation layers may pixelate your icon.)
(Increasing cyan and reducing magenta will brighten your cyanish-blueish colors.
If you want more blue, reduce the yellow as well.
If you want more greenish toning on your blues, increase the yellow.)

WHITES;
Cyan: 0
Magenta: +55
Yellow: +55
Black: 0

Alright, now we have this;

I'm still not satisfied with the reds and blues on the icon,
so I'm gonna add one more selective color;

REDS;
Cyan: 0
Magenta: +4
Yellow: 0
Black: +23 (this will add a little contrast to your reds)

CYANS;
Cyan: +100
Magenta; -100
Yellow: -100
Black: 0

BLUES;
Cyan: +100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: -100
Black: 0

WHITES;
Cyan: 0
Magenta: +35
Yellow: +35
Black: 0

Now we have this;

More pretty ha?

Now I still want more contrast so I'm gonna add a Levels layer;
I don't know actually how to use Curves layers so I'm using Levels instead.
They're pretty much the same.
But sometimes you can achieve the result with 2 Levels layers
than you can easily do it with one Curves Layer. o_o

Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Levels

Play with the arrows till you're satisfied with the result.

Now you're pretty much done. You can add text or textures if you like.

(Only difference is, I increased the yellows on Cyans instead of reducing it)
