To my friends who monitor this journal:

splashbomb is moving!!! I've made a community - splashbomb_icon! As I won't be updating this journal anymore, please friend the new community. (only if you want to of course - no pressure) *I'll give you a cookie!* ^^

I've wanted to do this for a while now but I never had the time.... Currently I'm on vacation - you know, one of those stay home on the couch deals... Anyway, the vacation provided me the time I needed to really get the community up and running.

I am going to be leaving this journal up and running for a while due to the old posts. I still get comments on some of my older work and I don't really want to move everything over to the new community - yes, Lazy is my middle name.

Yuna "Smile" Tutorial
The icon won 2nd place over at ff_awards
Made using PSP9

We'll be going from THIS to
Slightly image heavy, so dial up users beware.

Get ready
Get set

Start by cropping your base

Sharpen twice

Using the "Freehand Selection" tool, set the selection type to "point to point" and select around Yuna.

Open this texture by gender

Copy and paste the selection of Yuna onto the texture

Take a dark blue color and set it to exclusion at 100%

Take a light tan color and set it to multipy at 63%

Set a light blue color to burn at 100%

Merge the layers down.
Duplicate the base and desaturate it. Set it to soft light at 100%

Take this texture by colorfilter (I rotated the texture 90 degrees counter clockwise) and set it to overly at 100%

I then masked out Yuna's face using a medium grey color (#808080) giving me this (using a grey mask takes that orange glow off her face but still leaves enough of the color so she doesn't get washed out):
(I also masked out that ugly orange bit on the upper left side of her head using the color black. The example here doesn't show that I did that though...)

A quick guide to masks:
In the above example I had put a texture on the icon and set it to overly. I didn't like how the texture looked over her face so I wanted to "erase" it. I prefer using masks over the eraser tool because it's easy to fix a mistake.
To get a mask layer started select the little button that looks like a mask in the layer palette.

To erase the area that you don't like, simple take a brush and using the color black, paint over it.
If you mess up and want the area back, use the color white.
Using different shades of grey acts as reduced opacity.

I took this texture and set it to darken at 100% (If you know who made the texture, please let me know so I can provide proper credit - the folder that I have the texture saved in says Bare-Grimace but there ins't anyone with that user name that I could find...)

I then masked out Yuna, which gave me this:

Create a new layer. I took this brush by unmasked_icons in a moss green color (#5e6e4c) and painted it onto the icon.

I again masked out Yuna so the brush only appears in the background

I used this texture, made by Ianthinae, and set it to screen
There was a light speck over on Yuna's hair that I didn't like, so again, I masked over the spot that was annoying me.

I then used this texture, also made by Ianthinae and set it screen at 63%.

Ok... time for some text!
In black, I typed out smile in "DpScript" size 10 (you can get the font from www.dafont.com)
for the tiny text I used "Times New Roman" in size 1, set to bold, with 300 kerning, centered. (The words themselves are just a jumble of letters - alskjd;a alskdjal;skjg 'lkajsdg'ajs) ^.^
I set it to overlay at 100%

I duplicated the text layer and knocked the opacity down to 48%

You should now have the finished product:

We’re going to make an icon of Ami from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. I made the tutorial using PSP9. Slightly image heavy, so dial up users beware.

This tutorial is for apies_a_beast who asked for a Sailor Moon tutorial a long time ago. Sorry I’m just getting around to it now.

Here is a link to the original picture.

Crop the picture to get a 100x100 base.
I sharpened the picture twice.

I then applied color curves to get a little bolder coloring on my base.
Go to Adjust, select Brightness and Contrast, Curves.
I always start off by selecting the default button. Marked in red in my screen shot.

Here are the settings that I used:
RGB – Input 70, Output 33
Red – Input 111, Output 150
Green – Input 70, Output 101
Blue – Input 4, Output 23
(Depending on what base you are using these setting might look awful – play around with them until you get a pleasing color for your base.)

Create a new layer and apply a light beige color (#cfc8b3) and set the blend mode to multiply at 100%.

Create a new layer and apply a pink color (#efbfca) and set the blend mode to darken at 100%.

I then applied a light texture made by colorfilter and set the blend mode to screen at 100%.
(I mirrored it to go in the direction that best fit my base)

Create a new layer and apply a dark blue color (#182646) and set the blend mode to exclusion at 100%.

Let’s give it some words shall we?

For the first line I typed “a happy life consists in” in Times New Roman, in size 4, with Kerning set to 50 with –0.400 Leading. Second line I typed “tranquillity” with size 9, and the third line I typed “of mind” with size 8. I centered the text.
I used the same color for the text that I used for the exclusion layer (#182646) and then I dropped the opacity down to 80% so it blends in a little better.

I then added a brush made by ?? (if you know, please comment and I’ll edit this post) with a steal blue color (#40495c) and set the opacity down to 70%.

There you have! If you have any questions let me know and I’ll do my best to answer it for you. Feel free to take the icon if you wish, just remember to provide credit. :)

18 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Icons
2 very different styles included in this set.
The first 9 I used a lot of textures and brushes. The second 9 I basically just colored with different blend modes and used gradients. I'm very curious as to which type you like better.

Tutorial

Tutorial

This is the first icon tutorial that I have ever done so please go easy on me. If anything seems confusing please let me know and I will do my best to clarify it for you.
This tutorial was made using PSP9 but it should translate into other programs.
Here we go...

1. Start by cropping the picture of Sawyer to get the base image.

2. Next I sharpened the base twice.

3. Duplicate your base.

4. Desaturate the image to -56 in Saturation

(Using PSP9 - Adjust, Hue and Saturation, Hue/Saturation/Lightness - bring the Saturation to -56, Hue to 0 and Lightness to 0)

5. Make a new layer.

6. Fill layer with a dark blue color - I used (#0d0c26)

7. Set that layer to Exclusion

8. Make another layer.

9. Fill layer with a greenish beige color - I used (#868066)

10. Set that layer to Soft Light

11. Take this texture made by me and set it to Screen.

12. Create another layer.

13. Add this brush made by teh_indy to get I made the brush a brownish color that I picked up from the icon (#4e3f28)

14. Make another layer.

15. Text time - I used Runic Mt Condensed for the text, size 8pt, kerning 50, anti-alias - sharp - to make "Sawyer"
I using this color = #553634

16. Make another layer - last one I promise =)

Last step...
17. Tiny text - Times New Roman, 2pt, anti-alias - sharp, Kerning 50 - For the tiny text I typed in this ... alsdfjkasl;d lasjgdl;asdjgk a;lskdfjl;asj <~~~ creative isn't!?

... Here's the finished product -

The icon is up for grabs, but I kindly ask that credit be given to me.
