The Musketeers 2014

So, are you guys watching this? Any fic recs (including your own) or comm recs or tumblr recs would be greatly appreciated! :)

I am pretty pleased that this show seems to have removed all the things I do not like about the books. Athos is not an abusive alcoholic, Porthos is not a vain greedy bumbling idiot who uses an older woman for her money, D'Artagnan is not a rapey prick, sleeping with every girl he meets... actually, I kind of liked Aramis' plot in the book, how he fell in love with a mysterious stranger, put his religious career on hold to take a year to learn swordsmanship, fought a duel over her, became a musketeer (but only temporarily!), how he is insecure that he's not as handsome and sophisticated as Athos...how he is always worried his lady stopped liking him because she disappears and doesn't write ...I hope we still get some of that stuff. And I hope the show manages to tell us why Miledy was in a convent as a young girl who clearly wanted out at any cost... I like that she did not kill Athos. They were clearly the most important people in each other's lives. Athos was a dumb young man, unbearably raw from just discovering that his perfect countess, the love of his life had a secret she kept from him, that his family was OMG shamed!!! because clearly if she is branded, no need to find out why! She must be a common criminal! Or worse, a prostitute! But now he's older and wiser (you hope), and he's spent years thinking of her and missing her.. maybe he secretly wishes he didn't have to hate her, that he could have TALKED TO HER.. found out her side of the story..I hope the show lets them hash out their differences and become at least friends again.. This way, nobody has to die, and everyone can keep having adventures :)

I just read a couple of super-scary articles about dental injuries in the NHL....

Yesterday, after taking a puck to the face, Crosby left the game and did not come back. The coach said it was just some lost teeth, but Crosby is tough as nails, we have seen him come right back after taking pucks in the face before, so it had to be really bad, like return of concussion or a broken jaw. Now we know that he had surgery yesterday to repair a broken jaw. And he will have more surgery. And he'll be out indefinitely. And he was doing so well this year. Dammit :((((

ETA: seriously, the last time I was this level of bummed is when Panic! divorced. Ugh, fandom!

What do you do if you are reading a story (already completed and posted, by a total stranger) and you have concrit? Nothing, right?

Does it bug anyone else that fictional Blackhawks (or whichever team) have the same front office personnel / trainers / etc, no matter how far into the future the story is? Does anyone really believe that Quenneville will still be coaching in Chicago ten years from now? Be creative, have some fun, send Laviolette to coach the Wild, and send Torts to Detroit, juggle the old boys' club around a bit :P

Also, teams don't stay the same, in about 3-5 years, the Islanders and the Blue Jackets and the Leafs (heh) are gonna be the best in the league, and, like, Calgary will be the new Ohio....

Going to bed. Tomorrow morning I want to find out that Blues have beaten Preds, Flames have beaten Wings, Bolts crushed Flyers, Columbus destroyed LA, Devils shut out the Rangers, and Penguins finally did NOT lose to Islanders. I kind of want Chicago to win, in general, but I'm ok with teams losing to the Sharks..

post scratched due to reasons

<strike>The Host is Twightlight, but backwards! I am pretty slow to figure it out, although to be fair, I haven't been giving it much thought?

Anyway: the 'hero' of The Host is a zombie who kills/eats lots of people, but none of those people really matter. Then he sees THE SPECIAL GIRL, the one who is better and specialer and worthier than all the rest of the people he killed/ate, they are meant to be together forever and so he doesn't kill her and she redeems him and makes him human again. She is Bella and he is Edward, except this time the story is from him POV and instead of her converting to be with him, this time he converts to be with her.

:D?

Note: I haven't actually read The Host or any of the Twighlight books (I'm sure they are fun reads, I just don't have the time?), and I don't think the movie of The Host is out yet? So, I am hypothesizing purely from the trailer for The Host and the Twighlight movies...</strike> (er, /o\?)

I went to see some bands Thursday night

Letlive opened the show and was pretty cool, for harcore / punk, or whatever. Although I think they would be more fun to see at Back Booth... I liked Enter Shikari, too. I guess it's hardcore / electronica / punk, with elements of rap thrown in? They put on a good live show and had lots of fun doing it. There were all the appropriate bits of dancing, climbing equipment and dancing on top, jumping, etc. A+ would see either band again.

I wasn't sure how I felt about seeing Falling in Reverse again. I've found the rumors confusing and am not sure what to think. I do like their drummer LOTS though and their lead guitarist can guitar with the best of them, and I like their actual music.... this time around, they didn't play it exactly as it is on the CD, and let the drummer and the lead guitarist do some solos, and they "fixed" things and gave away some singing/screaming parts to the drummer and the bass player (possibly due to lead singer's voice being a bit f***ed up) ..all in all, it was a good show, and the lead singer made an attempt at being a decent human being and apologizing to his fans for doing all the stuff that pissed them off... he almost pulled it off, too, but by the end of the show he was back to "self-centered prick". Business as usual.

Reproductive rights have been a HUGE issue throughout this election. And women seem to have won the right to decide what to do with their bodies. And rightfully so. If someone doesn't want to grow another person inside them, they shouldn't be forced to do so.

But I feel that the issues behind this issue are maybe even bigger. Namely, that deciding not to mother the child you gave birth to is a major taboo. No woman *wants* to have an abortion. It is a major surgery. It can cause serious complications, it can even kill you. And you are killing *something*. It's just a sad sucky choice all around. But currently in our society, having a child can mean THE END OF HOPE FOR THE MOTHER, the end of her education, the end of good job prospects. Why does it have to be this way? We have a large number of people spending ridiculous amounts of money for fertility treatments and/or adoption from China or w/e. Because currently there is no legitimate way to reassure the unwantedly pregnant that their child will be protected and that nobody will look down on them for "being selfish" (ugh). And there is currently no way to reassure those who want that child that they will get to keep it, that this adopted child will truly be theirs in the eyes of everyone. The social rules and the legal system are fucked up and THAT'S the real cause of this whole reproductive rights issue. If the system gets fixed, if the society stops saying that caring about your own future is "selfish" (if you are a woman), that not wanting to raise a child is "selfish", if this social stigma is removed, and if things are put into place to reassure women that to be given up as a child isn't "fate worse than death", THEN most women will likely chose not to abort, and those who actually want children will no longer have to go through years of expensive and painful treatments or costly adoptions from foreign countries. [damn, that was a long sentence, hope it made sense]

P.S. And that whole "my mommy gave me away because she didn't love me" drama is SUCH BULLSHIT. First of all, YOU did not exist at the time. You became YOU later, AFTER she gave a tiny ugly squealing creature away. Second of all, being a mother is basically an 18+ years-long continuous sacrifice and knowing one is not ready to make such a sacrifice should not be wrong.

Elementary & Revenge

Still watching Elementary. Spousal unit loves it, but I am still trying to see if I will start liking it. The characters are just...maybe missing something? I was pretty excited to have Lucy Liu be Watson, but did they have to make her such an empty failure?? She never served as a military doctor, in fact she isn't a doctor at all, because oh noes! she has EMOTIONAL ISSUES! And as far as I can tell, she's not very good with her fists or a gun? And she has no interests, no hobbies, no direction in life...even worse, she has taken a job as a CARETAKER, as if she was a teacher or a nurse or a nanny...like, they couldn't even had let her remain a doctor?? And their Holmes is just, kind of a moron? :(:(:(

I am seriously considering giving up on Revenge. It is becoming a soap opera and I have never watched any of those tangled messes of highly convoluted bullshit and I am not about to start. This sucks, because I love Emily and Nolan (but not like that). But the beauty of Count of Monte Christo was in clarity and simplicity. A group of people had wrong the hero in the past. Some of them conspired, some were just heartless, but *their* actions are in the past. Now they are happily and contentedly living their lives, having forgotten about the person they've wronged. Enter our hero, with one plan. One by one, he doles out justice. As he finishes with each person, his reasons and his actions become crystal clear, and he moves on to the next. The people he finished do not come back. Revenge S1 seemed to be following the right path for a while, but I guess that's not a recipe for a multi-season television series? I am not sure what to do with the mess Revenge S2 has quickly devolved into..

I ordered a t-shirt, and it came with a William Beckett poster (the latest one, I assume). Seems a shame to throw it away. If any of you should want it, I'll gladly give it to you (free, obv). It's bent in half in an envelope.
