It's been about a month since my last update. My junior year of college started up, and I've been floundering about ever since. It's been a rocky start, what with each class becoming progressively more demanding. I'm in the second 'part' of a two-part Brit Lit class. While the readings are extraordinarily wonderful, they are lengthy and at times difficult. There's that distinct summer feel in my brain, like I emptied out most of my smarts gallavanting around during my free months. Though, ironically, I was working a lot of that time. Go figure! :)

I'm in tragedy over Owen Wilson. I hope he will be all right. That totally floored me.

Definitely on a Buffy kick. I've watched about half of Season 5. Oh, Spike. ♥

Hope everyone is doing well, and to those back in school I salute you and wish you luck! I feel your pain.

So last night I went to the American Idols Live concert. And let me say this: CAKE. I screamed myself hoarse. Absolutely, one-hundred percent voiceless till about noon today. Care for a review and a few pictures?

Let me just say, there was a complete change in atmosphere whenever Blake performed. The other Idols were received warmly, but the house exploded when Blake finally did his three song set. It was incredible. When he put together the mix onstage with She Will Be Loved and With Or Without You I nearly passed out. He's so smooth; he really handles the stage well and with confidence. This, IMO, is in complete contrast to Jordin. She is cute and did a couple nice numbers, but she was jittery and all over the place.

Though I keep feeling like Chris Richardson stole the show. What with the surprisingly excellent beatboxing of his own (WITH BLAKE!!1!) and OWNING the drums during the group 'band' numbers... awesome. Chris on those drums did things to me. Oh, yes it did. He was righteously SLICK. The whole Hey Jude number was the magic of a natural high, minus Sanjaya's intermittent screeching.

Melinda, Phil, and Gina were in fine form. Sligh and LaKisha were okay. Sanjaya and Haley proved just as played live as they were during the show itself. I swear, some of the group numbers for the girls were so unbearably riddled with cheese and a lack of charisma. When the boys were together it was a lot more believable and not so lounge-act.

I would have died if they had come off the stage to those of us on the floor. Unfortunately, only those with seats RIGHT up front and right to the sides going up got any hand action. I was bummed. Security was keeping anyone from, you know, doing any crowd surfing. ;) But all things considered, it was definitely worth it - and worth the, oh, sixty bucks I spent on merchandise. I was weak. The pirates! Could I really have left without the Blake t-shirt? Or the 8x10's of Chris and Blake? Or the big program? Apparently not.

So I started to write this review and it ended up being a mini-novel that was so disjointed I nearly drowned from embarrassment. I finished the book Saturday afternoon, after having read till 6:00AM the night previous. I finally had to stop, 300+ pages in, because I could hear birds chirping, I was seeing spots, and I was convinced the same line was printed a thousand times because I just kept RE-READING it. In post-DH euphoria, I can hardly put my thoughts into words. I started to read it again, but then my mother stole it and claimed it was her turn. Honestly. What is she thinking?

I have to say, I am sorely tempted to brand it the best. Sorely. I think the problem with doing that, however, is discrediting the other six books. Without them, DH wouldn't have been the climax it was. Ok, ok... so here's the concise version, the predecessor of the long and jumbled version I must sort out. If I ever actually do that. Eh. Point being I can't bring myself to wait any longer! I must say something! Aagh!

- Albino peacocks. The Malfoy Manor. I knew this was going to be a good book.

- OMG! Voldemort comparing his and Lucius's wand length. I about died laughing. I know it's retarded, but I did. I really did. I'm sure Lucius's was longer. Right? Where are my HARDCORE MALFOY FANS?!!

- I thought the wrap with the Dursleys was nicely done and even sentimental. Dudley’s not thinking Harry was a waste of space was surprisingly nice and Petunia being the last one with Harry before they departed was great… and it was moving, her being on the verge of perhaps saying something but unable to finish it. Her having a connection to the magical world, a jealousy of Lily that went beyond what we knew, and a connection to Snape really increased her complexity tenfold. Well handled.

- Seven Potters. Seven kinds of fun. The number Seven wins again.

- HEDWIG!!!!! >_<

- Mad-Eye... sad. But I expected someone was a goner. I was shocked that Hagrid survived this scene, to be frank. I never really was too attached to Moody, so this wasn't too crushing.

- Auntie Muriel! What a kick. Xenophilius? Omelet? Fabulous. I was so happy to see Luna so soon. Barny Weasley?! *dies* That was hilarious. And I loved Harry telling Krum about Ginny having some huge, hulking boyfriend. And Ron and Hermione dancing. I adored how the wedding was the unexpected catalyst for the Trio starting their Quest. That was the best - loved the chaos. Loved Hermione shouting desperately for Ron. Oh, shipper moment. One of about a thousand. This was the ultimate Ron/Hermione lovefest.

- Ron/Hermione hand-holding at Grimmauld Place. Precious.

- Loved Kreacher! I figured his story was far from done and I wasn't disappointed. Part of me wished Regulus might still be 'round and kicking, but I think his part was given the justice it needed. I am insanely curious about him, however, and would have liked to know even more. For me, no offense intended to Sirius fans, Regulus > Sirius.

- Penetrating the Ministry... AWESOME. Umbridge having the locket?! That was fun. It was, it was!

- My stomach literally sunk when Ron left Harry and Hermione. I was in TRAGEDY. I figured he would get back, somehow, but I was like NOoooOOOOoooOOO! Hermione being heartbroken was played to perfection.

- NAGINI!Bathilda ... creepy. Didn't see that coming, period. Eugh. And I was so sad over Harry's wand. In the moment, anyway.

- I'll note here that the Dumbledore back story came as a surprise to me. I was almost proud of JKR for making him a lot less perfect and a lot more complicated. I liked the struggle there and the resolution which, in its own interesting way, redeemed Albus as well as showed Aberforth in a flattering light. So tickled Aberforth was a part. I figured he would be, as I figured Regulus would be as well, but I was pleased.

- Loved Ron's return, saving Harry. YAYZ! And the silver doe... oh, the silver doe. A moment of Severus ♥ Lily, please. I loved Ron retrieving the sword and Harry realizing that Horcrux was meant for Ron to destroy. The Horcrux apparation, the illusion of Ron still being only second best and of worrying Hermione didn’t truly want him but wanted Harry, and being finally able to break it was nicely symbolic for the character. Kudos.

- Heh. Harry loves Hermione as a sister. I keep telling everyone. Eesh.

- Loved it when the Trio was captured. Oh, poor Hermione and the Cruciatus curse! Ron screaming her name... tore my heart out.

- Poor, poor Dobby. That was awful. Bellatrix was just getting herself into a VAT of trouble. I never even really liked Dobby. Then JKR killed him and I was very sad. I think I might have cried here. I was certainly shocked.

- Gringotts. Yay! Hermione as FAKE!Bellatrix? Hee.

- Harry getting to use the Imperius curse?! YES!! Harry + Unforgivable Curses wins at life.

- Neville as the leader of the Resistance? I have to admit, the evolution of his character, I think, is one of the best in the series. I loved those who were staking it out, relying on Aberforth for news and sustenance, biding their time. Waiting for Harry. Waiting for a sign to fight. *sighs with happiness*

- RAVENCLAW COMMON ROOM!! The Gray Lady!!

- Minerva McGonagall is my hero. I was so beyond delighted to finally BE at Hogwarts and to see the teachers in full fight mode. So happy to see Sprout, Flitwick, Slughorn... and what about Trelawny, dropping crystal balls on heads?! ♥

- Can I just say that I am absolutely tickled with the Battle of Hogwarts? That the final battle was AT HOGWARTS just really sealed the deal. A more fitting place could not exist. And to see the characters show up? Oliver Wood?! I mean, come on! I wanted to cry, there, simply because I realized how excited I was to see all these peripheral characters that somehow, someway were such a part of the Potterverse it was such justice to see them a part of the last act.

- Ron/Hermione, down in the Chamber of Secrets getting basilisk teeth (COOL) and finally, finally getting to kiss. I thought it was sweet. The feelings between them was illustrated to perfection as was, at last, them being mature enough to handle it. I have to admit, while I did enjoy the canon version, I would have almost liked to see the kiss be after Ron's return to the trio. Though that was right after the FAKE, EVIL!, HORCRUX H/Hr kissing... and maybe that wouldn't have fit. I liked Ron lifting Hermione off her feet and Harry having to remind them there's a war going on. Priceless.

- Percy! Oh Percy! Stealing the scene, the little sneak. Telling Pius Thicknesse he's resigning? What a doll. I was so happy until...

- FREDDDDD!!!! JKR!!!!! How could she?! I will NOT accept this one, no matter how anyone attempts to justify it or console me. I was sure the worst was over for the twins when George lost an ear. But Fred. I'm crushed. And really pissed. That was so unnecessary. Cruel. Though, I admit (very grudgingly), it was a beautiful moment for Percy. Sigh. I cried, here. I cried something fierce.

- "And that's the second time we've saved you tonight, you two-faced bastard!" Oh Ron. Getting to punch Draco after the trio comes to his rescue. Such love. Though perhaps not as much love as Draco and Harry sharing some special broomtime. That was great.

- So let’s talk Draco for a minute. Loved his wand becoming instrumental and Harry’s continual mention of it. I know there will be those who think Draco was being sissy, but I completely loved him being unable to fully betray Harry, Ron, and Hermione. It was a changing moment, but, again, not so drastic that I didn’t buy it. I appreciated this look into Death Eaters who were falling out of love with the idea of Voldemort, yet with the complete knowledge that any false move would be their ultimate doom. I liked Narcissa sort of holding the three of them together and, almost, biding her time. I was surprised at how vicious Crabbe was at the end and how Draco was not cool with that.

- Tonks and Lupin?! BOTH?! Ugh. I prepared myself for Lupin's death. But when they were married and actually had a child, I had foolishly begun to hope that they might make it through. At least one of them, meaning Tonks. Definitely felt gratuitous. It remains interesting to me how JKR killed of that particular year, that primary past group of Hogwarts attendees (James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin, Snape).

- NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH! Ha ha. Mrs. Weasley PWNs Bellatrix. I did enjoy. Though that was supposed to be Neville's moment of glory. He was supposed to smack her down! At least he got to chop of that Snape-killing-old-woman-defiling-wretched-poopstain. Commonly known to Voldemort as Nagini. HMPH.

- Severus/Lily is canon, suckers! HA HA. I'm laughing spitefully an awful lot. Better cut back on that. And Snape told Harry to look at him before he died. To see Lily's eyes. That was priceless. I didn't like the way Snape died. After all, I didn't WANT him to die. I wanted him to kick some ass. And how about rubbing salt in the wound, telling us about Snape and Lily AFTER Snape's already dead? Ugh. I just always imagined he would go down, if he had to, rubbing it in Voldemort's face that he was totally working against him the whole time; complete and seamless manipulation on his part. Thus...

- SNAPE RULES ALL! Favorite character of the series alert like WOAH. I think I was prepared for Snape to die. I held out some hope, but really I think I knew deep down he might not make it. But for being such a powerful wizard, and, IMO, the cleverest of anyone in the story… I wish he would have gone down differently. Dueling Voldemort… getting in front of Harry… I don’t know. Stupid snake. I appreciated the irony and sadness of Snape getting to see the green eyes, Lily’s eyes, in Harry before he passed on. Snape/Lily was handled beautifully and we were given much more than I expected, especially since the book was winding down.

- There have been times I didn’t like Harry too much. And I think that’s the greatness of it – he’s not a perfect hero. He’s very imperfect. But by the story’s end, I knew I didn’t want him to die. I was so nervous and was second guessing myself, hoping that he would make it through. I liked how fearless and accepting he became in the end and how he definitely outthought and outwitted Voldemort. By far.

- Voldemort. What a sucker. I thought the finale with Voldemort and Harry was pretty swell, actually. I actually figured something would have to happen, that Harry wouldn’t be really dead, but it was nice to see him be so fearless. And so awesome that he went willingly to Voldemort and lived again after he killed him. Loved the reactions when Hagrid brought in Harry's body.

- Poor Colin. I was, again, shocked that Hagrid lived. I mean, I'm fine with it. Just really surprised.

- THE MALFOYS LIVED! All three! I am sick with twisted delight. I don't care what kind of abuse Lucius and Draco are getting. ♥ Love them all. And Narcissa? Love. Telling old Voldy that Harry's dead? FOOL! Insert another round of wild, celebratory laughter here.

- JK throwing us new pairings at the end. Isn't she a kidder? Teddy and Victoire, who we can all safely assume belongs to Bill and Fleur.

- Scopius? Scorpius Malfoy? Scorpius, I have no doubt, is made of Awesome. Scorpius + Rose forever? Yeah, we all know it’s true. Or, as I have heard, is it Scorpius and Al Potter? *chuckle* Who was Draco’s wife?! Come on. Who? Anyone we know? I assume JK would have let us know if it had been someone we were familiar with, such as Pansy. (Despite adoring Ron/Hermione, I hope this mushy epilogue does spawn some Dramione fanfic. I'm evil.)

Notes that don't really fit in anywhere else!

- I was thoroughly grateful Ginny wasn’t shoved down our throats. I was very, very worried it wouldn’t be kept to the trio. I thought there was a chance that Ginny could force it into a quartet. That would have not worked for me whatsoever. Keeping Ginny at a relative minimum undid some of the damage done from shoving them too quickly together in HBP. Though, I admit, while I accepted it I was still dissatisfied with Harry/Ginny being OTP.

- Luna is my everything. How sad and sweet, her ceiling being painted with the faces of the sextet. I heartily agreed with Harry when he knew Luna would be all right, that she was a lot tougher than they were giving her credit. It was sort of kismet, Luna and Ollivander to be trapped together and become close. I wish in the Epilogue we could have discovered what happened to her. Her and Neville? Her and Dean (which, by the way, was an unexpected duo to throw our way)? I would have loved to think Luna ended up a wandmaker – apprenticed to Ollivander or something to that effect.

- On Severus/Lily again: Best friends. They knew each other from childhood. I just… love it. The whole of it. And I appreciated Harry, almost immediately, making peace with it instead of being any kind of resentful. And the silver doe, the Patronus? That was beautiful and, again, very sad. Put into a different light Snape’s treatment of Tonks at the start of HBP when her Patronus changed. So was Snape’s Patronus different before Lily died? Before Lily and he parted ways? I wonder what it was. I sort of like the idea of Patronuses being connected to, well, heartfelt matters. I don’t care how lovesick that sounds. I think the tragedy of the whole affair is what makes me love it all the more. Sigh.

- Neville's Grandmother is love.

- Voldemort being the traceable word. COOL.

And this was the short review? What's wrong with me?

a deathly farewell

We are mere hours from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. That means, like many here, I am going into full hibernation mode for the rest of today and the entire weekend. There have been too many close calls with spoilers. I have done so well that I would die to be spoiled now. I can't believe this is the end. It's morbidly depressing and excruciatingly exciting.

I wish those of you on my f-list or simply stopping by that have plans to read HP7 to enjoy yourselves fully! I expect coming online early next week will be an almost overwhelming explosion of talk, delight, horror, and mourning. I am absolutely dying to know what happens and will have to force myself to not look at the chapter titles with every ounce of willpower I possess.

death by redemption

Oh hooray! It's the endless parade of fandom rants. How deeply we love, how deeply we are bitter. Spoiler warnings for Spider-man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

It took a single summer to kill off my two favorite characters in two sweeping, blockbuster fandoms. See, I should have tethered my cart to a character that had low odds of biting the dust. But no. I always do this to myself.

There have been plenty of excellent reviews here on LJ for At World’s End and Spider-man 3. I’ve gone around reading, hemming, hawing, and contemplating how everyone saw these movies a little differently. Both are the final act (supposedly) of a trilogy. Both did sensationally at the box office. Both have had their share of rather unfavorable reviews by press people, whom I typically ignore.

I think I could have liked them a whole lot more, if I hadn't been distracted by certain story/character related choices. I think there were moments of brilliance in both, but the feeling wasn’t carried through.

The most disappointing aspect of both movies, for me, was the choice to quickly redeem and then kill off Harry Osborn in Spider-man and James Norrington in Pirates. I went, spoiler-free, into both movies sort of expecting the worst but hoping my fears would be proven unfounded. What really made me upset, in my little fangirl way, was how I felt like the only person in both jam-packed theaters who was upset about these aforementioned demises.

The Harry Rant

The Spider-man movies are great, comic book fun with bright colors and that inevitable goofiness that spans the series. Being that I have just enough geek in me to know a lot about the Spidey comics, it was like sensory overload to discover they were packing characters like Gwen Stacy, Eddie Brock Jr., the Sandman, and the alien symbiote suit into just one film. It felt like Sam Raimi and Co. were determined to pull out every stop imaginable, just in case this was the 'final' film… which AHEM we all know it’s not.

While I felt the supporting roles were well cast, they were all underused and when they were used it was a little stifling, because this movie should have focused more exclusively on the three main characters: Peter, MJ, and Harry. It was the varying facets of their relationships that were the most interesting and believable, and was wrapped all too quickly. What I hated about Peter and Mary Jane was that their relationship in the movie didn’t evolve. They started together, they ended together. They are forever!!11!! so excuse me whilst I grimace.

They give Harry this classic ending in Spider-man 2 where everyone is like GASP! he’s found Daddy’s Goblintopia and we know what’s coming in the next movie! And yes, we got to see Harry go badass for a little while. And it was great! James Franco is great. And the fight between emo!Peter and Harry later on? Very entertaining. However, I found Peter a little unforgivable after that. Ok, yes, he was wearing the Evil Suit of Evil. But taunting Harry, slapping Mary Jane across the room… I don’t know. Kind of made you root for Harry/MJ, no matter how you tried to remind yourself that Harry threatened MJ too - as Captain Jack would say, "Only a little." - or that Harry was the force responsible for Peter indulging in the suit because MJ left him. Whatever. Who cares. The point? Harry is awesome and was, for me, the most interesting character by far in this movie. In the trilogy!! There should have been a lot more of him and a lot less peripheral garbage.

I think Harry went out a hero. There’s no question, there. But to have Bernard, our resident Alfred Pennyworth, let Harry know he loves him... it felt like more a plot device to make Harry help old Peter out and DIE rather than a complete evolution. I was so upset. Yes, I did cry. I take my favorites seriously. ;)

It’s just dumb because you can’t kill Spider-man and you can’t kill his One True Love. So who do you have to kill to make it a big dramatic finish? The very hot, very awesome Best Friend in a way that suggests the stupid "There was no other way to redeem him than SACRIFICE!" copout. All I know is that I am going to be slouching to Spider-man 4 if they get everyone back but James Franco because they up and KILLED his potential-packed character. Luckily, if they are smart and true to verse, they can bring people back. But that, I suppose, is a fool’s hope. Enter the fool.

Other Notes

- J. Jonah Jameson is awesome. At all times.
- Omelette love with MJ and Harry was a little corny, but I was a big fan. Or was I a big fan of James Franco shaking it to "The Twist"? We’ll never know. But yes, MJ/Harry is a ship I’m proud to sail on. Take that.
- The effects were good.
- Venom... we needed more. So much more.

The Norrington Rant

Warning: Includes lots of capitalization. Much. Anger.

WHY WAS NORRINGTON IN THE MOVIE FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF FIVE SECONDS?!?!!? How dare they!! What were they thinking?! They cemented his standing in the Pirates trilogy in Dead Man’s Chest. He's part of the OT4 (shamless plug)! So how come At World’s End virtually glossed over all Norrington’s character development and the oh no! ending of DMC? They picked up with all the other characters but him. Injustice! Outrage!

How about this: we don’t have Sao Feng in the movie AT ALL since that was totally pointless and trumped up for absolutely nothing and instead give Jack Davenport some much earned, much desired screen time? Or how about we shorten some of those scenes that dragged on for an eternity? I swear, I was so ticked off walking out of that movie and am still extremely bitter.

BOOTSTRAP KILLED NORRINGTON. That is the WORST decision of ALL TIME. How ridiculous! It wasn’t fighting against anyone worth it in some heart-wrenching to-the-death battle. He was stabbed by Barnacle Bill and that was that. And old Bill even survived the whole movie to be all ♥ with Will at the end. Unbelievable. Beckett gets this huge, slow-mo death scene and Norrington gets stabbed after, what, his third minute onscreen? Fabulous. Nice one, writers! Pat yourselves on the back!

Was it so horrible of me to find more chemistry in two seconds of Elizabeth and Norrington than in three movies feeding us Will/Elizabeth? If it is, so be it. At least, sigh, he got his kiss. My sister tried to console me by saying at least Norrington went out having saved the woman he loved and having "redeemed" himself. Bah! Here we go with the redemption bit again: does redemption equal death? I think it’s ridiculous.

I suppose it’s doubly hard because no one, it seems, is really dead in Pirates except for... Norrington. Meaning Barbossa and Jack have loopholes. Will got his reprieve. Governor Swann didn’t, but that’s another unnecessary, pointless death all together (though it did provide Elizabeth with a believable, decent bit, IMO). But ten years later, there’s faithful Elizabeth waiting for wondrous Will with wee Willy Junior... and The End. Um, I want my Norrington back!

Other minor complaints, Pirate-wise:

- Speaking of relationships, everything Jack/Elizabeth from DMC was left horribly unresolved and neglected. Disappointing.
- Calyspo: The Attack Of the Fifty-Foot Woman. Awful. I was expecting something actually awesome to happen… not crap-awesome.
- Shoulder Angel Jack and Shoulder Devil Jack. Um, no. No.
- Was Boostrap the best plot they could give Will? Really?

The Good… yes, there is good. Suprise!

- Barbossa saved this movie. He really did. Thank you, Geoffrey Rush.
- Johnny Depp gets second place for saving the movie – mostly thanks to his scenes with Barbossa. The Davy Jones locker sequence was amusing, but perhaps not what I had thought we would see. However, after finally getting out of the Locker and minus the mini-Jack’s, he was fantastic. Loved the running to tip the ship over, loved his swordfight with Davy Jones, and so forth.
- Will + Cocky Tea Party = High Times.

Damn.

OH Idol finales! How I do forget how terrible they can be! There were some moments where, I swear, it was a miracle my eyes stayed open. Filler. Filler. Oh wait... nope. More filler. I shake my head and wonder why I don't just wait and tune in for the last ten (or apparently twenty) minutes. The answer to that is simple: addiction. Or rather, addiction to those one or two contestants I fangirl till the bitter end. And yes, there was a touch of bitterness.

So. On every AI finale, we have the good, the meh, the bad, and the ugly. The very, very ugly.

Good:

- Blake and Jordin's lighthearted duet of "I Saw Her Standing There." Really, it was darling. When they started it this way, I was smiling and ready for a entertaining night. Oh boy!

- Thank you Carrie Underwood for having the grace to inform Clive Davis and Co. that we should get back to the program and the two finalists. Seriously.

- Speaking of Clive and the ONLY good part of his lecture... Daughtry RULES ALL. Though I knew that already, so it wasn't a revelation for me.

- Ford Music Video. Um, Blake and Chris Rich? Can I have one of each for my personal collection? Please?

Meh:

- The boys singing with old Smokey was fine. The problem? It was a little thing called Blake Lewis is one of the final two and he got to sing a total of one, short line. Nothing against Sligh, whom I like, but he was really singing the bulk tonight. What gives?

- The Beatles tribute was so-so. It was supposed to be a big finish, I suppose, but cramming it in as the hour struck was a little much. Couldn't one of the other not-so-great acts been cut?

- Kelly and Never Again was fine. Though my mom was horrified, asking if KC had gone rock (or rather what she termed "hard rock"). I was like, "Well, sort of Mom." That's all it took to set her shaking her head. Apparently the awful ballad music suits Mom just fine. Well, good for her!

- I love Blake beatboxing. Blake beatboxing to pimp Doug E. Fresh? Not my favorite. I liked when they sort of went head-to-head sounding it up, but I was just kind of put out. I wanted Blake's number to be a whole lot more of, well, BLAKE. But lest I forget: the stars they dig up for these events are going to get the most airtime. Fabulous!

- The girls and Gladys Knight... that was fine, I suppose. It was nice to see the reception Melinda got. But seriously, Midnight Train to Georgia is so played I can't even talk about it.

- Carrie, I'm sorry, but I'll Stand By You was Gina's first in my book. Hmph.

- Jordin and Ruben did well, I suppose. Wasn't all over it, but didn't hate it.

- Oh Taylor. Why didn't Daughtry win, again? GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Bad (really bad):

- All right. Wonderful. Sanjaya is a craze. Who gives a turd? That was awful. It wasn't even "good" awful. It was just AWFUL. His whole intro? Unnecessary. Ridiculous. A waste of time. And a huge insult to the other contestants, especially those who made it farther.

- Clive Davis and the Neverending Speech. Was it really needed? Yeah, dude, you've made lotsa money and you have some hitmakers. Go. Sit. Watch. Silently.

- Gwen by satellite. Ok, listen, you either have Gwen in the Kodak (because I don't have anything against Gwen, per se) or you don't put it in. It was an odd choice and SURPRISE! filler.

- Green Day. I'm sorry to those of you who heart Green Day, but it was so long. So. LONG. I was done with it before it began. I don't know. It just didn't fit with the finale. Though, if nothing, it fit better than that ghastly Prince extravaganza last year. *facepalm*

- BETTE?! Bette must have been sick. She sounded off. Jerry Springer, why were you crying? Paula, why weren't you dancing with Simon? Oh wait. Simon was probably not impressed. So Celine's successor is Bette. Interesting. And an interesting choice for Idol. Color me impressed!!!!!

Ugly:

- I. HATE. THE. GOLDEN. IDOL. AWARDS. I hated it last year. I still hate it this year. It has to go. It has to GO. The only funny part was seeing a recap of Ryan and Simon's bickering. Other than that? Trash. Total trash. I love that some of these fascinating people get seats at the finale because they were crap. Can I go to the finale if I audition and be total crap? Ok, good deal.

- My heart giving one final leap of hope when Ryan was about to read the results. I know Randy and Simon are trying to be honest, but come on! "Wipe the floor"? SIMON! You really want to be on my list!

- The winner's single. Mondo suckage. Very obviously Jordin tailored in every regard. To those viewers who were undecided up till the last minute yesterday, making it look like Jordin was the perfect choice because of this song wasn't very - how shall we put it - sportsmanlike? Pfft.

I have an extremely large bone to pick with the whole "singing contest" mantra that's been hammered into us for the past couple weeks. Yes, we all understand it's a singing competition. But what has really chapped my ass is that there are different kinds of singing. Different styles, different genres, different strengths. The girl with the "powerhouse" voice is only one kind of singer. And you know what? That type doesn't do well with contemporary, alternative types of music. Other singers do. Why is this so hard to understand? The best singer doesn't entail only one type of voice. As we've all figured out, my taste is very Blake and not so Jordin. Believe it or not, Blake is a good singer. But what can ya do? Sulk? I might try that a little later, just for kicks.

I have to console myself with the fact that Blake is better off without the constraints being winner would have imposed on him. With the fact that he did so well and made it till the end. With the fact that NOW he doesn't have to have that CRAP!song as his first single. But I really just want to be petty because I wanted to HAHA because he won. Maturity level? High. Very high.

I love MTV.com's take on the final song:

As predicted, Blake wasn't given much to work with. He was never one to pick a schmaltzy inspirational song (and if he had picked one earlier in the season, he probably would have been booted that week.) Blake's disgust for the lame song is completely apparent. He's vacant for the first part, manic and jumpy for the second, and bored to tears for the ending. The whole thing is sort of punk in a weird way (as if he's sniffing, "This song can kiss my beatboxing ass") and I kind of love him for it. The only thing that would have been cooler? If he changed the lyric to "This is my never."

Right on, brother. Right on. Best part of yesterday evening (besides loving Blake)? Chris Daughtry in guyliner and guitar-mode. Score!

This journal is on indefinite hiatus. :( Obviously I haven't posted a lot and have been a horrible friend. Life just really catches up to you sometimes, as I know many of you can attest to. My classes last semester nearly killed me and I can't make any promises for the new semester. So if you remove me from your friends lists, I understand completely. I have to have mediocre sex with Governor Swann? Boy, I tell you .. my luck with men.

And my thoughts on Superman. Which I just saw at the last showing and didn't get out till 1:20am. My friend and I were the only ones in the theater. Baby.

All right, I have to be honest here. There were three main things I enjoyed about this movie. One: Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Two: Kitty because she's great (yay Parker Posey). And three: James Marsden who is TEH COOL.

First a little James Marsden rant. Why, James Marsden, are you always the lover who will not win? I think you could very easily win in many situations. I feel bad that poor Richard White (like Cyclops before him) is having to compete with an outer force. Superman. Wolverine (though I ♥ Wolverine). And I hear James is going to be in some movie with Patrick Dempsey where he also is going to lose his girl to him. Geez. Why, with such charisma and talent, must you be the down-and-out lover seemingly always?

And a little Kevin Spacey rave! Lex Luthor, you visionary man. I couldn't help but love all his plottin-and-a'schemin' that at times made little sense. I admire him for just concoting a hair-brained scheme and giving it everything he had despite it's obvious, er, flaws. Just plunging in headfirst. I love how cynical and sarcastic he was. I love his opera music. I love his rag-tag band of goons. I love his wigs. I love that he conned some poor old biddie out of everything and finished her signature with no sweat off his back.

So I basically spent the whole of the movie rooting on Richard White and Lex Luthor. And I don't know if that's exactly what I was supposed to do.

See, I hate Lois Lane. I can't explain it. I just have never understood the appeal of her character. She is so darn incompetent. I swear she kept forgetting she had a kid. She kept, maybe slightly unconciously, toying with Richard's and Clark's affections. She just makes me mad. She isn't a strong person and she's so ... GAAH! I thought my problem was mainly with Margot Kidder, but apparently it also extends to Kate Bosworth and anyone who takes on her role. Seriously.

As for Brandon Routh: he was okay. He wasn't captivating, but he didn't suck. Personally I was more interested in a Superman/Kitty pairing. As weird as that is! The only couple-ish moment I got into was seeing Kitty get emotional watching Lex's thugs beat up Superman. I was like, "Hmmm." And also her obvious delight when he saved her from the car. Good times. But obviously he didn't quite jive with me to the point of me rooting mostly for him and not the other guys.

Maybe my problem is the whole Superman idea. I know Clark Kent is supposed to be "the mask" which makes him different from other superheroes, but besides the bumbling and not getting Lois I just don't find him quite as sympathetic as the others. He is too invincible, IMO. Too powerful. Too together. I mean, he can turn back time for crying out loud. Death doesn't have to happen. Yes, there's the Kryptonite and the need of the sun. But still! I guess I just find Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne and the X-Men posse easier to root for because they struggle. Demons! Humanity! Poverty! Darkness! Despair! Prejudice! Rejection! Blah blah blah.

Yeah, I'm weird. Sorry to those of you who really loved it. :)

Yay! Crystal Chappell's official website looks awesome ( http://www.ccandfriends.com/ ) now because my friend has taken over the design. And that's just temporary. I'm tickled pink because we get to do her official messageboard, soon, and that will just rock my world. Isn't it just absolutely bizarre and wonderful when you suddenly are part of something directly connected to someone "famous" you idolize? Wow.

I saw POTC2: Dead Man's Chest on opening day! I'm a bit late on giving my two cents (and have seen it another time since) but I will anyway. For my own sanity. I think if nothing else I can say I really enjoyed it for the most part. Though, duh, my layout says it for me. :)

I stayed away from spoilers like the plague. The only thing I knew was the first trailer that was released. Never saw the second one. Never read a cast list. Never saw anything. Why? Well, I get insatiably curious most of the time about movies and end up ruining it for myself somewhat. I did that with Revenge of the Sith. I looked at all the pics. Read the spoilers. Etc, etc, etc. So there were no real surprises, even though I did love the movie. I wanted to go blindly into POTC2 and just be, well, blown away. And I was!

It took a bit for me to get used to the pacing. Everything was happening so fast and was quite layered. If you missed subtle lines or revelations .. suddenly it's like "Huh?" and that bothers some people. Not me, though. It just intrigues me and makes me think. Or want to just see it over and over to figure it all out! The opening was really great. Elizabeth in the rain was just very beautiful - and I thought it was fitting for this movie to open with her similar to the last one doing so. Later I tried to explain to my sister that Will was not the new Commodore (in his blue outfit) but that was his spiffy groom look. Loved the "CAPTAIN!" part. I enjoyed Governor Swann knocking the candlestick off the wall (like Will did in the first one) when Elizabeth mentions, er, 'having' Will.

Jack's entrance in the coffin was brilliant. Not as epic as his entrance in the first, but still great fun. I instinctively knew it would be fun as soon as the coffin was by itself in the water. But the way he shot the bird and then popped out was BRILLIANT. The jam-packed theater went wild (and I did right along with 'em)! I was delighted to see Gibbs and the other crew members back. Of course, this whole movie was pure Johnny Depp delight. Captain Jack is just, well, the best.

I thought the stuff with the natives on the island was a little drawn out. Funny, yes, but kind of unnecessary and just a bit of an excuse to have some fun. Which was fine by me. Jack and Will being reuinted as Will's tied Han-Solo-style to the log was priceless. Pintel and Ragetti showing up and having their biblical discussion was awesome. I found that the Tia Dalma scene was very important (ahem, BOOTS) and the quotes in there classic. Undead monkey. Jar of dirt. But I didn't warm to Tia Dalma nor why she was necessary. Oh well. Davy Jones and his Barnacle Buddies were tolerable but not as cool as Barbossa as the baddie. I didn't really warm to him, either, though he didn't ... bother me as being the nemesis.

I'm going along, though, wondering "Um, where's Norrington?!" and was a bit surprised at how much I wanted to see what he was doing. I was prepared to be disappointed and not have Jack Davenport back. Then Jack ends up in Tortuga with Gibbs, er, taking names and I heard the voice! The Norrington voice! I was tickled. Not to mention he was all scruffy, drunk and ready to pirate it up. Double tickled. Suddenly that was the turning point from me really liking the movie to absolutely loving it.

I personally loved all the little references to the first movie. I also was interested and suprised at them suddenly going along with a sort of triangle with Jack/Elizabeth/Will. Throw in Norrington and I'm having a party. The three-way swordfight was beyond AWESOME. I was just loving it to no end. Best part. Elizabeth kissing Jack made my mouth fall open and stay open. She chains him up. Leaves him to die. Doubly gaping. WHAT?! So I'm upset and curious and baffled. Then Barbossa walks down the stairs, I shriek and then cry out in shock when it ends! Darth Vader says: NOOooooOOOOOoooOOO!!

I tend to read into things a lot more than I should due to an overactive imagination, so I saw everything as having more layers than perhaps it really had. I loved the scene at the end where Will (who doesn't know Elizabeth chained Jack up) looks over at Lizzie at Tia Dalma's and sees her miserable expression. We know she's feeling guilty, shocked and saddened at what she chose to do. Will, though, I think believes she is mourning Jack because she's in love with him. That's when he turns back and his expression changes and he is willing completely to go try to rescue him. Yes, Will thinks Jack's a good man beneath it all but maybe wasn't as distressed at his apparent "death" due to seeing him kissing Elizabeth. He puts that aside, though, because he loves Elizabeth so much he wants her happiness more than anything. If that's Jack, he's going to do what it takes to save him. Now by no means am I a Will/Elizabeth fan (I'm actually Jack/Elizabeth) but I just thought that was a really, really lovely moment.

If I had a complaint, it's that I felt a few things were a bit out-of-character. I just don't think Jack would be that desperately afraid of the Cannibals or of Davy Jones. Yes, he has moments of fear .. but usually Jack Sparrow shrugs off impending doom completely. In POTC he is seconds from being hung and is chuckling at his crimes and trying to correct the guy for not saying "Captain". He's a negotiator, yep, but he doesn't necessarily run. I was SO happy with him at the end turning around to confront the Kraken head on, "Hello Beastie" and all. Such a powerful moment. Other than that, Jack was in fine form. Will, I felt, didn't develop or change much but in a way that was interesting. He was still rash, heroic, noble and naive. Elizabeth, I felt, was in character for the most part. Her desire for freedom makes her flirtation with Jack and her abrupt decisions seem plausible. Though .. what happened to her great love for Will? It seems more forced in this one. Huh. Norrington is the one who got the makeover, but it was great. I loved that because of his loss of position he became a piratey-drunk. Seeing him right in the action with the main three was beyond cool. They are the Quadrangle of Love. His choice to take the heart in order to get his old life back felt right. I just hope they don't bump him off in the third movie since he kind of betrayed the rest of them to an extent. I <3 Norrington.

Overall, excellent. I just lust after Captain Jack like it's nobody's business. And Will. And Norrington. Fangirling is such tough work.

Thank you so, so much to all of you who wished me a happy birthday on Sunday. I was so touched - so many, many hugs and well-wishes from me to you. I really appreciated it. I have been MIA for months now and that has had to due with some hard times. Finals finished up and I was thrown into my job working feverishly in order to get into a good place for the summer. I went on a trip to Ohio and then to Virginia where I went to the Superstar Saturday and Sunday at Paramount Kings Dominion to see actors and actresses from Guiding Light and As The World Turns. I met my hero, Crystal Chappell, and it was pure and utter magic! Wow. But upon my return, my Grandma passed away and everything has been a bit messy since. I've been consoling my mom and trying to handle things. So thanks, again, for the thoughtful wishes because they meant a lot especially now.

♥ I can only hope things will settle down so I can pay much needed attention to my dear friends here and elsewhere. *hugs*

Spoilers for last night's American Idol and Gilmore Girls .. guh.

Okay, what on earth is Rory thinking?! She loves Logan still? After everything? Oh. My. Gosh. Yeah, I know Milo Ventimiglia is off in The Bedford Diaries and being Rocky's son .. but her just thinking of using him for revenge or something is ridiculous. I had such high hopes for this episode - I was so disappointed when Rory pulled back from Jess's kiss. He totally has his life together now and they are SO READY to be back together. They tease me when Rory gets Jess's invitation and her face alights! Grrr. HATE LOGAN. Come on, Rory.

As for Idol, I thought Chris didn't pick the best song .. but he is still cool. I'm so over Ace and Kellie by a long shot. I kind of liked Katherine. I think Elliot and Taylor did the best. Bucky and Paris were okay.

And Terrence Mann is guest stinting (he'll be on today) Guiding Light? Too weird. He looks old. I hate how cool people get old. He should SING instead of chew the fat with Reva.

- Didn't I observe the moon in 4th grade? 7th grade? Why do I have to do it again as a Sophomore in college? The madness must stop. It's beyond cold outside when the moon finally decides to show.

EDIT: As of 10:55am my time .. the icons have disappeared. :( I'm not sure what to do now, since I don't know if I have the $$ to upgrade my account. I'm very, very sorry.

MERRY MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! And Happy Holidays, period. I am so excited! Christmas Eve! *squee* Since I still have many little siblings running around, Santa still comes to my house and the feeling in the air of anticipation and excitement is positively high-inducing. Hee. I love this time of year so much. And after having a warm, yummy dinner and hearing the Christmas music playing and realizing that tommorrow I get to give and receive (LOL) I have butteflies in my tummy. I am still one of those people who can hardly sleep a wink on the night before Christmas. ♥ I wish all of you the merriest, safest, and truly jolly of Christmases and many hugs!
