one thing i will never understand (and refuse to try to understand) is the type of person who destroys another person's enthusiasm or passion for something. the type of person who insists on disempowering others, right at the moment when they could be empowered & experiencing joy. i see it often and don't get it. and the people i am thinking of are the same weird white liberal types who think they don't have issues but somehow can't feel happy for another person's growth and don't know how to spend time with a person who is different from them. sad and embarrassing and just all kinds of counterintuitive.

our neighborhood in arizona smells like jasmine this time of year. reminds me of my dad because he always loved the smell when we went on walks. it's nice being home and not having to cook iftars each night, though i enjoyed cooking in philly after work, too. (i felt accomplished lol.)
tonight my mom will cook eggs and sujuk (sausages). last night we had mula7 and ta3miyya, which is better known as falafel, but ta3miyya is superior imho because we add dill to it and it has a lighter texture generally speaking. mula7 is hard to describe. it comes in many different forms and is a highlight of iftars in sudan. it's made by preserving minced meat and finely minced okra powder, i think over a long span of time, and then cooking it into a stew of sorts (not the best word to describe mula7) and serving it with kisra (which is somewhat similar to injera but not as thick and not gluten-free) or 3seeda (which kinda looks like mashed potatoes but isn't; made of wheat). i eat mula7 with rice usually, which isn't the norm but i don't eat gluten. i think it would pair well with teff injera too, though my mom may disagree. a lot of mula7 contains meat, but there are a few vegetarian versions that are made with yogurt. one is called ni3miyya.
speaking of yogurt, we also had salatat rob (yogurt salad) last night, another common feature in sudani iftars. i recently learned that they have a similar dish in kazakhstan, which i had in philly once. not exactly the same thing but very similar.
i think i might be ovulating, or was ovulating.

iftar log to come, which includes egg omelet the way mom makes it, lentil soup last week, shake shack this week, and a big plate of spaghetti tonight.

mtv used to have this show called "diary" where musicians, entertainers, and other celebrities would talk about their "lives." they would frequently say something along the lines of "you think you know, but you have no idea," which was funny to me because i don't remember learning anything profound on that show. all of the celebs said that phrase, either during the intro or in the moment before they went to commercials (or both). there was an acoustic guitar playing in the background when they said it. kinda corny now that i think about it.
i like the phrase outside of this context but after mtv diary turned it into their catchphrase it felt too rehearsed and played out. if i could adapt it into something more interesting i'd suggest that only one celebrity is allowed to say something that deals with this idea of knowing versus not knowing things. and rather than posing it to the viewer (who of course would not know much, especially in the early aughts), they would imply that they themselves may or may not "know" things, but they aren't allowed to show that they know, so over time, "knowledge" becomes an abstract and nebulous thing that's kinda buried and suppressed and appropriated when it suits certain people. which is applicable to more than just celebrity and entertainment, don't you think?

feels strange having to explain to people that i am not their property.
