saturn return
have you heard of it?
Have you heard of it?
If not, and you have absolutely zero understanding of Astrology, I would liken it to the narrator of that car-racing arcade game.
“Checkpoint!” she exclaims with enthusiasm and momentum, affirming your passage through an edge-of-your-seat obstacle.
So, yes, in a nutshell, a Saturn Return is a checkpoint. If we’re lucky, we get three of them in our lifetimes. From ages 27-30, 56-60, and 84-90.
It’s an energetic moment asking whether we are truly in alignment with the life we want to be living.
As an aside, most people are never aware of this when I am in conversation with them, but I am always discreetly collecting data. Especially with the folks I know are non-believers.
It is posed as a very innocent, “What was happening for you when you were nearing the end of your twenties?”
A generic, vague question, yes. But how peculiar + fascinating to consistently hear that some sort of life-altering circumstance tinted the years between 27 and 30.
“I became a parent.”
“I quit my job and completely changed my career path.”
“I realized I married someone I wasn’t in love with.”
A lot of folks dread the Saturn Return. Is this the result of modern pop astrology twenty-second YouTube / TikTok videos?
In other words, the dread is derived from a paradigm that finds pleasure + fulfillment in spaces where three minutes is the maximum attention span? (And that’s pushing it.)
It is a paradigm so zoomed in and focused on a mote speck of time that it forgets the picture in its totality. Like a bunch of teenagers that are unable to see past Friday night and their local football game.
So what happens when we zoom out?
What is the purpose of the Saturn Return in that regard?
Well, first, let’s talk about Saturn.
Saturn is the planet of structure, stability, time, karma. Saturn is the foundation, the bones, the support system. It moves very slowly – it’s orbit time approximately thirty years, spending roughly 2.5 years in each Zodiac sign.
(PS – I just used an em dash in that sentence and, sheesh, in this one too. I’ve tried to refrain from using it because of the suspicion of AI use, but I promise – I just like it a lot.)
(And humans had it first.)
Back to Saturn. It is dense, heavy. Archetypally speaking, it corresponds to the father. The hand of discipline. It can raise you up with pride or slap you across the face, depending on how your own being approves / disapproves of the choices you’re making.
Saturn is going to take its time and work with tenacity + diligence. It is the ruling planet of Capricorn, a sign known for its determination to get the job done. And incredibly well at that.
So when Saturn returns to its natal placement in one’s chart, it’s really pressuring us to become very serious about something. Of course, there are hints as to what this might be.
Looking at the house placement and sign it falls in is a great first step as to receiving such clues.
Interestingly, I’ve never really put too much thought into the sign my Saturn falls in, just the house placement.
Because mine makes me giddy and lit up.
Eager.
Curious.
My natal Saturn is in Aries in the 9th House.
Aries is the cosmic ignition point. Cardinal fire. The ram. Aries is going to blaze the trail without looking back to see who is following. It’s just going to go.
The shadow side of this is selfishness, stubbornness, inconsideration, impulsivity, and impatience.
The refined expression is ambition, optimism, leadership, honesty, and serving as a visionary.
The 9th House carries themes of travel, wisdom, higher knowledge, spirituality, and expansion. This house corresponds to Sagittarius – also a fire sign.
Beyond these immediate observations, we can take a look at what planets are aspecting Saturn – whether conjunct, trine, oppose, or sextile.
In my chart, I notice Saturn is quite near – but not quite conjunct – my South Node.
So what do we do with all this information?
Is it to predict our future?
Is it to make decisions in the present moment?
Is it to laugh and mock such a ‘silly little hobby’?
Everyone’s going to have a different answer to that question.
For me, it is to be aware. To feel some semblance of comfort in a data point that validates the energetic wave I’m riding.
Could I be constructing a narrative to fit the data?
Absolutely.
Regardless, the more data I observe + collect – not just mine, but others’ as well – it is simply undeniable. It only becomes more acutely accurate the deeper I investigate.
Which is really what brings me to writing this article right now.
(PS – I’ve been hesitating to publish some things because I don’t feel like they fit into the ‘category’ of whatever identity I’m trying to establish for myself right now. I’m learning that the point isn’t to fit into some box I’ve constructed for myself and cater to the expectations of people that may or may not be reading. I’m just writing because it is a cathartic process. To share it – even more so.)
Taking stock of my life over the last few months, I’m scratching my head thinking:
Why?
Why all this intensity? This bold assertion? This impulsive necessity to speak the truth?
Revisiting my chart today, sitting more with this energy of Aries…
Ding ding ding!
Ah, makes sense.
It has only become more amplified with the Sun also transiting Aries at this time.
You know who else is in the Aries picture at present?
Eris.
Classified as a dwarf planet, she is known as Mars’ sister, the feminine warrior. No bullshit. Just radical truth.
She has the audacity to speak for what she believes in; she has the courage to move toward what she desires.
Though we might not all be in a Saturn Return, Saturn is transiting Aries in each one of our individual charts. Same with Eris. That looks different for us all.
In your 7th House? Most likely a time in which you are committing yourself to a business/intimate partnership and/or realizing it must crumble.
10th House? Same, but on the topic of your career.
Etc. etc. House 1 - House 12. You get it.
Dichotomous energy for sure.
Fire and Earth.
Blaze and bone.
Impulsivity and methodology.
Certainly a weaving to behold.
In self-reflection of what has been presenting itself in my world, I’ve been practicing taming my anger. When the heat of injustice sizzles my blood, the primal urge to breathe fire is incredibly alive.
But how cruel to incinerate the instigator.
Better to let it heat the prima materia. Let it steam and cool. Separate, and reintegrate with clearer understanding.
Let it transform with purity and intention.
Let truth be known with love.

I have Aries in the ninth house too 🤗 have you even heard of the feminine archetype for Saturn? The Bone Mother. Cailleach. While Saturn absolutely represents the father, and in many ways the patriarchy, it rules Capricorn, which is a Yin earth sign. The Bone Mother navigates deep winter, teaching hard lessons not as obstacles to goals in a power-over culture, but with kindness, if severity, for survival.
