Gary, Indiana undertook a number of initiatives to earn their SolSmart Bronze designation, including upgrading zoning requirements and making information more accessible to the public. The city also supported a Solarize Gary campaign to make solar energy more accessible to residents, conducted an analysis of potential sites for solar PV installations across the city, and more.
- Created an online permitting checklist, increasing transparency for community members and solar installers
- Reviewed local zoning codes and identified restrictions that intentionally or unintentionally prohibit solar development
I’m proud to announce that the City of Gary has achieved the prestigious Bronze SolSmart Designation. This program will help empower Gary’s residents and businesses to embrace solar energy.
To reach this goal, our dedicated team has worked hard to streamline the process for solar installations. Now, residents and businesses seeking solar approval benefit from a simplified permitting process. To start, Gary is embracing an open-minded approach—we are encouraging solar installations on rooftops, in garages, and even backyards to maximize accessibility. We also have educational materials available that help dispel common myths associated with solar.
I thank Brenda Scott-Henry, Director of the Office of Sustainability & Environmental Affairs, for her leadership in turning this vision into a reality for our city.
