Raid (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot

Giggles exploded from the shadows in the corner of the store. “Sugar sugar!” The words were uttered in awe by several guttural voices. They had burrowed up from below after the child returned to the surface, visions of promised treasures filling their heads. Packages were ripped open, and the insides slurped between teeth and tusks. Domed, sparely haired grey-skinned goblin heads pressed together as their bounty was consumed.

“Light, light is rising,” the lookout hissed from the clear wall.

Stuffing many more treats into their sacks, they dove back underground and refilled the hole, guttural giggles fading with their escape.

Impossible expectations (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Sandra Crook

She stood and stared through the window at the growing dark. He wouldn’t make it home in time. Their guests were already here, in the outer room, mingling and chattering like the chimes of dozens of stainless-steel forks against fine delicate china. She straightened her shoulders and fluttered her wings. Her reflection in the glass showed only perfect makeup, human-styled hair and a stunning dress. I’ve got this, she told herself. As the first fae family living on this human street she would not disappoint the hungry crowd. Time to make an impression. They would love her. She was perfect.

Going home (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Fleur Lind

Wings fluttering, she watched the old man sigh and place his teacup onto the chipped wrought iron table. He leaned back and closed his eyes. She couldn’t touch the table. The iron would burn but she wanted to go to him and let him know it would be okay. Many years had passed since she last saw his face. His wrinkles sagged, tight skin now loose. Once bright sapphire eyes now milky and red-rimmed. He’d given up everything for his wife and now Wendy was gone.

Wings fluttering, she waited. He’d be ready soon and she would bring him home.

Dear Diary (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

Fury built inside her chest and in her mind until it exploded with a force that could not be contained, splintering the sky and turning the land around her into ash the way her dreams had been torn asunder and scattered in the ripped and torn pages of her diary. She felt exposed, violated, aghast at his knowing her deepest hopes and darkest fears.

“Darling, you must contain yourself.”

“You contain yourself. He dies tonight.”

She stormed from the room in a swirl of material, destruction dancing on her tongue. “Oh brother of mine, I have a surprise for you!”

They will come (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

It was a place to stop and eat and most importantly breathe. He peered up at the ceiling as they stepped inside. “Jeez, what is with these humans. Why do they just keep dead things as display items?”

“Hush, Jonik. We just need food and rest before we move on. Do not draw attention to us again, please.”

“Very well, Mestir.”

They sat, ordered a meal and sipped the water brought to the table. “You’re sure the glamours will hold?”

“Provided you don’t cause trouble. Yes.”

“And our plan for tomorrow.”

“Keep moving. Our people will come. Trust in me.”

Don’t let them catch you (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Brenda Cox

He glanced nervously over his shoulder at the crossroad. No sign of his pursuers. Buses and cars and bikes flew past. He shuffled back a few steps. It would be all too easy for the ones after him to shove him into traffic. Splat. That would be the end of him. Sounds were muffled, his vision blurred. The pounding in his chest urged him forward, but the red light said no. He clutched his chest, eyes darting in all directions.

“Dad! There you are. How did you get out. Come on back home with me.”

Foiled. He hung his head.

A war to end all war (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Alicia Jamtaas

The disguises were perfect. Tiny lights hidden in decorations. The humans did not notice even tinier eyes, sharp pincers, miniscule but incredibly pointed teeth. They were the front guard, and were spread throughout every house on every block all over the world. They infiltrated with the change in seasons, within celebrations and parties. The inhabitants were none-the-wiser for the evil lurking in their midst.

I and my brethren wait. The war will begin soon. The humans have allies they don’t even know about. We are disguised as humans and join their parties. When the death beetles attack we will launch.

Be careful what you wish for (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Liz Young

“I don’t think it’s safe.”
“You don’t have an option. Look, I’m your fairy godparent. My magic will keep us safe.”
“Why don’t you just fly me out of here yourself?”
“Long story. Get in. We don’t have time to chat about this.”
“Um… should the seat be just a—”
“Hold on.”
Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
“Hey, someone’s following us!”
“Snozzle-sticks… Right so, hold on. We’re nearly at the portal.”
“That will get us home?”
“Um… sure! Of course.”
“Ouch, what was that?”
“They’re shooting at us. Magic bullets. Duck.”
WOOOOSH
“Are we good? Fairy godparent? Where did you go? Oh no!”

Another one bites the dust (Friday Fictioneers)

“What’s it made from?”

“Elven wood.”

“Elven? No such thing.”

“Oooo I assure you, it is. Listen.” The shop keep plucked the instrument down from the pegs and strummed a few chords. Sound swelled and filled the small room. It flooded the girl’s senses and spread through her body bringing tingles in it’s wake.

“Wow.”

“Do you want it?”

“How much, I don’t have a lot of money.” (She didn’t have any.)

The shop keep’s eyes twinkled. “For you, dear. It’s free.”

One touch and she was gone.

He pushed it back up onto the pegs and stroked the strings.
