What we lost (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

She used to sit right there, in the shadows, hoping desperately to be seen. There used to be more people. People to chat to, people to visit with, people collecting packages, walking dogs, or taking children to the park. Before the algorithm there used to be a lot of things. Before the implants there had been free thought. She didn’t have a phone anymore. Had been allergic to the chip. Thank God. All connection to the internet was lost and she saw what they had become. Now there was no one left to warn. She walked on. Alone but alive.

Accidental imprisonment (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

She pushed her shell home to the side, using all of her strength and peered out, blinking under a harsh strange sun. Where am I? She fluttered her wings. “Kiki? Lob? Beka?” There was no answer. She stumbled over the shells to the almost invisible wall. What is this place? Thunder rumbled in regular beats, the ground rocked and a sharp-pitched squeal echoed in the space.

“Look mum, a fairy!”

“Yes dear, come and eat your dinner.”

“But mum!”

“Now.”

“Yes mum.”

She peered up. A round hole to freedom. She aimed, breathed deep and launched up.

“Mum, look.”

“Oh!”

Moving while standing still (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot

You know those times you are moving at speed but don’t feel as though you’re getting anywhere? Yeah, that’s me. The lies, the fights, the family squabbles. Odd behavior that makes you think some of them have joined a cult, or worse, are just terrible people and somehow you missed the moment it happened. That’s the thing about secrets. They never end well. Is it any wonder that when the call came to join the next ship off world I jumped at the chance? I told no one. I knew how they’d react. This holiday dinner is gonna be spectacular.

Breather (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOPTO PROMPT © Ronda Del Boccio

She ransacked the safehouse’s cupboards for first aid kit. “Damn it, it’s gotta be … Aha! Here we go.” She grabbed it and raced back out. “Hey, sit down, ya fool. You’ll bleed out.”

Her partner slumped down. Concussion, she thought, eyeing his pale face and fixed eyes. Blood streaked his cheek. She applied rudimentary aid. “Gonna have to wait for the doc, bud.”

He grumbled. She flicked on the old style TV. Aliens and ships everywhere. She collapsed beside him. “Not sure we’re getting out of this one.”

“Negative-nancy. They’ll succeed, captain. Bit of rest is all we need.”

He chose his path (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Sandra Crook

The cobble-stone path brought back memories best forgotten. She traversed them quickly, remaining careful not to twist an ankle. Ahead lay the tavern. She must hurry. Her time window to jump home would appear in less than an hour. She pushed the door and found a figure slumped at the counter. Empty glass in hand. “John.”

“You found me.”

“You must come with me.”

“And if I refuse?”

She flashed her disruptor weapon.

He sighed and stood. She followed him from the tavern and stepped right into his weapon’s path. The last words she heard were his. “I’ll not return.”

Asimov’s Laws (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

The scrubber did its best, but what could it really do? The viscous nature of the remains couldn’t be removed. Not without outside help. That would take a while. A long while. Deep claw marks riddled the wooden deck. The scrubber couldn’t work on that either. Long deep blacken-maroon stains showed where they had been dragged away. No investigation would take place. No one alive had come this way in weeks. All was silent and still. All but for scrubber’s whir. It would keep scrubbing until power was lost. Could be any day now. Until then… the scrubber kept scrubbing.

The last Witch (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Lisa Fox

She stared at the horizon. Glittering water beneath, blue sky above. But the line… the line… That was the answer. It had to be. Magic pulsed through her, too bright to contain. She was the last. The last witch.

I can’t stay.

When she stepped beyond it would all end. Her power kept the land alive. But what was the point of keeping it alive with no one alive to live on it.

In her hands she formed the last spell. The one that let it all go. Around her the world turned dark. The land died. She walked on.

A choice is made (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot

She stood on the deck staring down at the water churning a trail behind them billowing forth as the hull sliced through. She listened to the slap and splash of water. It was deep out here. The portal device in her hand was small – like one of the “modern” telephone devices they used here. With the device she held her ident chip, torn from her skin only an hour before. They would come after her. But she had a head start. The splash made no sound. The clock was ticking now but a pressure lifted from her shoulders. I’m free.
