30.Icon tutorial

A good long while ago,the lovely kayable and liesmiths asked for a coloring guide on animanga from my Ask The Maker thread.I thought it was about time I do it,or else I'd completely forget.
So let's get down to business.The business of bad tips and lazy tricks.

excuse the messy and hideous banner.I was really sleepy.

I picked a random image from my folder, and bless bc it's a perfect image;there're so many ways you can choose to color it. Giving it a simple & boring center crop, now I'll share a few of my favorite ways to color.

Soft Light.

When you feel the original image's colors are already sufficient and only needs a little bit of saturation and contrast, I suggest Duplicating the base and setting it on Soft Light. It's quite a basic move but the colors are much livelier now.

Boost up the Vibrancy.

What was life before I learned of the Vibrancy tool?It enhances all the colors, but unlike Saturation, it doesn't give you as much of a rainbow vomit if you accidentally go too far. Work both Vibrancy and Saturation together right and you get the best colors.I honestly use Vibrancy in as much layers of an icon as possible, and it's always one of my finishing steps.

Gradient maps

Gradient map is a 2-in-1 magic wonder. Not only does it add color, it also adds lighting.Personally my gradient map is always a combo of light + dark color, with setting on Soft Light, but that's definitely not the only way to work gradient map! You are encouraged to try different settings and color combos to fit with your own iconing methods!

Tone down the Vibrancy.

Pumping the colors to max isn't the only way to use Vibrancy. Sometimes less is more. Try going the opposite direction in Vibrancy to achieve a faded and muted look. In case it turns out to be too flat, gives the icon a boost with some gradient maps.

Selective Coloring.

You never know what you truly like until you've tried them all!And Selective Coloring allows you to do that.Lean the icon towards blue, purple, green... whatever you fancy, and see how it looks. Selective coloring also lets you bring out specific colors only instead of the whole thing, so if the icon has areas that are too vibrant or flat, you can fix it here.

Monochrome.

If you know me you know I love a good monochrome icon. Just add a gradient map on Normal with a color combo of your choice. The challenge of monochrome is to not make the whole icon fall flat, and you can do that with a combination of the tools above, or slap on a few life-saving textures!

I didn't go in-depth or show step-by-step to achieve a coloring because I want you to play and experiment with these methods on your own, so you can learn your own preferences and ways to color. I hope this post hasn't been as useless as I feared, and has given you some actual tips.

applepips16 has requested 2 icon tutorials from my thread @ Ask the Maker,so tonight I'm sitting my butt down and getting the first one done!

I started out with this gorgeous picture of Cara Delevingne.I added a little topaz to it,but it's optional and actually doesn't make a big difference.Some sharpening would give you the same results in this case.

1.
I chose a close crop to bring all focus on Cara's beautiful face.

I'll be recreating this icon from the natural base for users who don't have Topaz.

2.
The black outlines on the sides of her face bothered me,so I just used a small white Hard round brush and painted over them (same w/ Topaz-ed version)

The image is a little washed-out,and I want the details of Cara's face to be more sharp and clear,so let's do that first.
Duplicate base.Set on Multiply 25%.Filter->Sharpen->Sharpen,then Edit->Fade Sharpen to 60%.
Add a Vibrancy layer and boost it up 'til you're happy.I pulled this to +35.

3.
*Since this icon was for a Teen Wolf gender swap set,I colored the jacket's neck red to represent the Beacon High school colors.But that's irrelevant here so I'll just skip over that step.*

Daniel Sharman has gorgeous blue eyes,and I wanted to bring that out in this icon.Add a New layer.Use a Hard round brush with #4772dc blue to color over the eyes,then set to Soft Light 60%.

4.
Any textures would only be distracting to the main subject in such a close cropped icon,so I chose a plain yellow background as to complement the blue eyes and make the icon pop.
Paint over the background with #fe5a1e orange, set to Hard Light 60%.Why not just use yellow you ask? I honestly have no idea lol I just like doing things the hard way I guess.I might have considered using an orange background at first,but then saw it on yellow hard light was more fitting.IDK IDK moving on.

5.
Having to re-locate the textures I used is my least favorite step in making tutorials /SOBS/ my folder is a huge disorganized mess.
Set this texture by fuuurs (with Saturation reduced to 60% and Contrast -35) on Soft Light 60%

6.
Add a Brightness/Contrast Layer and amp up the contrast by 10.
Add a Vibrance Layer with +75 Vibrancy

7.
Set a copper gradient layer on Soft Light to give the icon a right lighting source.

8.
Duplicate the gradient layer,but erase the majority of the top right corner so it wouldn't get washed out on that side, and add more shadow to the left.Set on Soft Light 40%

9.
Duplicate the copper gradient from step 7 and flip it horizontally.Erase most of the bottom left,set on Soft Light 50%

10.
I wanted just a little bit more of shadowing on the right side to bring out the smirk and the cheekbones before calling it good.So once again, I duplicate the copper gradient from the last step and erase most of it except for that area.Set on Soft Light 100%

AND WE'RE DONE.

January

the only 3 icons I made this month.I was trying to change from my old style,which consisted mainly of extraction and bright colors.I tried to be more simple and soft here.I clearly failed.

whoo I was finally back into PS and Livejournal!theiconquest howed up at this time,and at first I was a bit intimidated because I have never been in a landcomm,and haven't touched PS in so long.But I am really glad I joined anyway.The challenges and the other iconmakers provided so much inspiration for me.I have never made so many icons in a month!

I noticed I forgot my old way of iconing animanga,which happens every year after my hiatus.I also tried iconing more rl.This month was just a lot about experimenting and finding my new way of working with rl caps and animanga scans.

August

I placed myself into the Hero path a theiconquest,meaning I had to focus a lot on colors.To me that basically means lots of bright icons.While further experimenting with rl iconing,I discovered the amazing gradient maps,which I tried to apply on every Cara Delevingne images I had.

I also was able to participate i animan his month,which was a great experience!I had no idea what I was doing,but everything turned out pretty good imo.

September

more playing with gradient maps here.It doesn't seem like it,but the first icon here was made using pretty much just gradient maps!It totally made manga coloring a whole lot easier,srsly.The first guild battle a iq_fortress orced me to work with a lot of different caps,so I was forced to try many different techniques.Most of them turned out weird,but I was slowly grasping the concept of rl iconing.

school hiatus

November

rl iconing experience helped me a lot with animanga iconing.After a lot of Hero experiences a theiconquest, I was pretty confident with my coloring.Inspiration came and went,so on some icons I felt I really succeeded and turned out to be everything I envisioned it to be,while some fell short.

I finally found the way of lightning and coloring that I like for rl caps with those Teen Wolf icons.

December

Rushed entry just in time for the end of the year,whoo-hoo!

I have been itching to try the new textures I downloaded some time ago,and was desperate to try my hands on Game of Thrones caps.Have been recently obsessed with the movie Les Miserables too.I have never iconned something that has just come out in theatre,but I found some hq images on Google and thought I would give it a try.

I actually am quite satisfied with these.I just really love the colors ugh.The Loras icon totally exceeded my expectations of what I could actually do.It came out perfectly as I had imagined it to be!My icons have always been surprises,never turning out to be what I planned them to be in the first place.

Wow,there have been drastic changes since January!lol Although I was on hiatus for half the year,I don't think I have ever stayed an active iconmaker for that long.All the friends and fun activities made it so hard to resist.

My animanga icons have been decently consistent with their quality,I think,and I do believe I have made some progress on improving rl iconing!

I hope I'll be able to keep making icons in 2013 and get even better :)

pair 1. I used to have a thing for cool coloring.Lots of blue & green textures and using levels.Now I go for a brighter look,often time borderline blinding bright.

pair 2. Had a huge thing for old yellow grungy textures & frames back then.I still love grungy textures now,but definitely got enough of yellow and reddish tones.Learning to love green.

pair 3. Again with the yellow grungy textures.Also animanga subject,which used to be my main iconing fandom.Toning down,and experimenting on real people.

Discovered Cara Delevingne while on Tumblr and instantly saved 20+ pics and promptly made an icon batch the next night.She's so pretty,plus her face is strong so it was fun to work with.

Icon post was inspired by dashberlin @ amarylis (specifically this post).I've always admired her gorgeous style of coloring,how perfectly vibrant,soft and glowy they are,without needing much complexity.Half of these icons were actually made for my 2nd attempt at challenge 1,and I only noticed I was unconsciously using dashberlin as an inspiration halfway.Then challenge 2 was put up,and it was just perfect timing.So I easily finished the rest of the icons while keeping dashberlin's style in mind.Of course there are some differences,and they're definitely not as good as hers,but I'm still quite happy with these :)

Woahh I actually stuck to one series for a whole icon post.AND IT'S A RL FANDOM.AND I USED CAPS.like,woaaah.Never thought I'd ever be able to do any of those things.
Most of the caps came from "Hounds of Baskerville" episode.Credit to kaitiescaps for caps.They were hd quality so it was not a pain cleaning up and I didn't lose interest half-way :) Decided on Hero because I'm not creative with compositions when it comes to rl iconing,but didn't like the Rogue color palette.I needed variety in colors,not just shades of green :P

Hey guys!This comm has been on a hiatus for a while cuz of rl and school,I'm sorry, and just a quick thank you to all the members and watchers!Last time I checked(few months ago) I remembered I had only 24..?But now it's 34!idk if I totally remembered that wrong and I had 34 all along,but whateverrrrr.Still thankful for every each of you and I hope time will fly by so I can get back to iconing!My skills had gone downhill drastically ;A; I suddenly got the urge to icon today,but I played around with new textures and adjustments.and failed.

01.I usually don't do crazy icons,so this was fun!The egg manip can look kinda odd,but I think it somehow fits...IDK,this is just a very different & wacky icon & I had fun making it.
02.Lack of creativity & inspiration got me People's choice.WTH.The only thing I like about this icon is the coloring.Imo the text shapes looks really out of place,but since people liked it,I guess it works.
03.I worked a bit harder this challenge to make up for how lazy I was last week.Extracting that image was absolutely tiring and painful,& had a love/hate relationship with that texture the whole time.The text was really fun to do though.
04.These 2 images were just too pretty for me not to use.I don't even know if they're 2 different characters or 1.Since they have different hair colors,I blended both sky & nature textures in to go with the hair colors & emphasize that difference.
05.coloredpastels's upside down icon for ff20in20 stood out to me,so when I picked the lyrics "Sayin I'm insane",I went for the upside down idea also to make the icon a bit different.Text composition didn't turn out as good as I hoped but it's ok.I was cautious with the background,since I did not want it to be an oversaturated,blinding yellow.I'm glad people liked it :)

01.Probably my fave icon from this whole lims.I just really how the coloring lol the "reflection" could've been done a lot better,but whatever.
02.Nothing to say about this,really.It was an easy & simple icon.
03.A weird mess I don't even wanna talk about.
04.Flower hidden on top of her hair,pretty obvious.The color should've been a lot warmer,idk what I was thinking.
05.The original had her on a wooden horse,so I wanted to replace that with a My little Pony pony.But it looked incredibly out of place,so I switched in a microphone cuz it's a fast & easy fix.
06.I actually really like the saturated colors of this icon.The white line could be distracting,but I still like it as it is.
07.Was on vacation & forgot about this until the last minute.Made an icon,then had to change it cuz I had to use main characters.Then had to change it again cuz it wasn't dominantly white /facepalm.Basically,another old PSD with a white background.

01.I originally planned to go with the Joker card.Then uhhhh idk what happened but I ended up using Jack instead.~~But he's holding Ace of spades,wtf ;A;~~The spade is placed pretty randomly,but whatever >_>
02.There's not that much to say about this icon besides the fact that I debated forever on which color I wanted the background to be...since it could work with pretty much any colors.
03.Had to use lyrics from Panda Bear's Slow Motion.I picked the apple line with no hesitation cuz I wanted something random.Then struggled forever.Manipulated an apple in his hands.I had a hard time choosing & arranging the font &is still not very happy with the results.
04.LOL'ED forever at those who gave crits saying how perfectly messy this was.I had no inspiration this week.Used another icon's PSD,extracted this image then slapped in all the challenge requirements & called it done.
SetI WANTED TO ICON REIKO SHIMIZU REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE FINAL THEME MAY BE.I'm glad I made the lyrics fit the images I liked (cut off Yui's fingers in extraction so he'd only be holding up 3 fingers :P) & I'm not sure how I got the texture like that,but I loved it & used the PSD a lot for the Chiho Saito's otp set lol
