Nitrogen is one of the most important factors. This is shown by the results of NRP 82 - Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. But there is also good news, at least for local #biodiversity. Current studies show that the triumphant advance of nitrogen-loving plants in #Switzerland is now in slight decline. "It seems that regional measures such as the reduction of artificial fertilisers are having an impact here," explains ecologist Jürgen Dengler. 📌And one result was rather surprising: "Vegetation reacts much more slowly to temperature increases than we would have predicted," says Dengler. The native species have not yet been significantly displaced by heat-loving plants from southern countries or other continents. 🔬 A solid gel that becomes liquid when it is shaken. Or when chance discoveries in chemistry hold enormous industrial potential. 🪵 Scientists from Empa who collaborated with the Weidmann Group – which at the time was active in electrical and medical technologies – discovered this property by working with cellulose-derived waste. A curious finding that led to a first joint research project in 2016, followed by the creation of Weidmann Fiber Technology three years later. 📅 Today, the SNSF’s Grant Offices Day brought together representatives from the Grant Offices of higher education institutions across Switzerland, as well as several speakers from the #SNSF. This annual meeting helps to maintain and reinforce our close cooperation. 🤝 The programme offered insights into a variety of current topics, including: 🔹 the reform of career funding schemes 🔹 the development of the SNSF Portal 🔹 ‘demand management’ measures in Project Funding A big thank you to all the participants and speakers who contribute to this important exchange, helping to provide the best possible support for researchers and their projects. 🚀 :::::: 📅 Aujourd’hui, le Grant Offices Day a réuni les représentant·es des Grant Offices des hautes écoles de toute la Suisse ainsi que plusieurs intervenant·es du Secrétariat du FNS. Müller (University and Children's Hospital Basel) want to improve the treatment of cleft palates in children. 📚 🇨🇭 Damir Skenderovic (University of Fribourg) and Christian Koller (Swiss Social Archives) are shedding light on the history of fascism in Switzerland. These are three of the 345 projects that the SNSF is funding with a total of 324 million Swiss francs as part of its Project #Funding scheme.
