Yes, the Harp was a predecessor, sort of, it was fairly close to the main idea(striking strings to get the desired sound) but the clavichord was the first to incorporate a keyboard, iirc. :P
I'd never heard of it, but after reading up on it, yes indeed it seems like a sufficiently expressive tool for composition, certainly moreso than the harpsichord. What an interesting keyboard instrument; thanks for mentioning it.
