KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

‘Man I’m bored,’ I thought as my chemistry teacher went over a PowerPoint presentation of the fundamental laws of science. Everyone was in the same boat as I was, even the young Calico that taught it looked uninterested.

Mrs. Red was trying to run the clock as she stayed on each slide for over 10 minutes and her eyes  were constantly turning to the clock above the door.

“Finally, thought it would never end” I muttered in relief as I slung my bag over my shoulders and met the others by the door.

“Glad your first day’s over mate?”

“You have no idea…I guess I’ll see y’all tomorrow.”

“Wait, give me your number and maybe we could call you and all of us could hang out.”

“Sure thing” I gave Ryan my number and he promised to give me a call sometime.

“Sorry Buck, we can’t be late for the bus again.”

“No problem, see y’all later” I said before we parted ways.

“Morning boss” I greeted the elderly looking human male known as Doctor Allen Brewer. He looked back at me in acknowledgement and went back to doing whatever he does here. Thanks to my dad, I was able to land a position at the local lab where me and many other scientists search for ways to improve people’s lives.

I entered the main lab and clocked into my station that sat smack dab in the middle of the room. I sat at the desk and started to let my mind wander, going back to thinking about the 3 furs that were nice enough to help me acclimate to the new environment.

‘I wonder why they even went through the trouble of trying to be friends with me while everyone else pretty much ignored me. Did they really want to be my friends or were they trying to get something out of it.’ I’ve had people attempt to be my friends so they could use me. They know how far I would go to help if they got me to like them.

‘Don’t stress yourself out over this Buck’ I shoved the thought to the back of my mind as I focused on the computer sitting in front of me. I have been researching the possibility of harnessing nuclear fusion to power the world.

Nuclear fusion on Earth was initially thought impossible; the necessary temperature of 400 million Kelvin could not be reached. The Sun‘s core is a nuclear fusion reactor and produces over 100 million units of power, but the payoff for achieving it could be a surplus of energy for every man, woman, and child on the planet.

“How can this even be possible, we would need more energy to power the plant than it could produce, we don’t even have materials that can stand that much heat?” I asked myself while leaning back in my chair and letting out a sigh.

“You shouldn’t talk to yourself, it’s not healthy” a female fox told me as she poked her head into my cubicle.

“Only way to keep myself sane Lacy” I laughed out as I turned to her. I never told anyone but I kind of have a crush on the vixen, who wouldn’t, she was utterly gorgeous.

“You lost that battle with your physique a long time ago” she joked as she stepped into my station.

“Perhaps…or maybe I was just born crazy.”

“That seems to be the most logical explanation” I felt one of her black furred fingers poke my nose softly.

‘You wanted to do this for a long time Buck, just do it’ I smiled nervously.

“I have to get back to work, see you later Buck.” Lacy said a she turned to leave.

“Lacy wait.” She turned back to me.

“Yes”

‘Here goes nothing’ I looked down at the floor and cleared my throat nervously.

“I was wondering if, maybe, you would like to have dinner with me tonight.”

“Sure”

“Really” I lifted my head to look at her and the toothy smile on her muzzle.

“Of course, I was wondering if you would ever ask me.” She said amused.

“Great, then I guess I’ll pick you up at eight.” That gives me just enough time to get ready.

“Sure thing, see you then” She said as she left my workstation and left since her shift was over.

I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding and went back to my research. I looked to the clock on the corner of my monitor and read 4:15.

‘Two more hours Buck’ I thought and went back to typing on my computer.
