Basket Hilt Sword Handle - Cleveland Museum of Art 10-15-2016

It is pretty easy to understand how this style of sword got its name. The Cleveland Museum of Art has several of these on display in the Armor Court.

I believe this particular style of sword is a Schiavona, a cut and thrust sword from Venice and the other minor Italian states. It is very well known for its complex basket hilt :D

According to the sign, they have the Schiavona and the classic Scottish highland versions on display. I defer to your superior knowledge of the subject to identify it as a Schiavona.

I love this style of sword, it reminds me so much of the tails of the musketeers and other swashbuckling stories heh!
