"Susan is a young girl out of high school aged 19, looking for a man to marry. Endlessly optimistic and upbeat, Susan never loses hope she’ll find the man of her dreams. Figuring it to be a good way to become acquainted with the town of Povey’s men, she began working as a waitress at the local diner, Richard’s, using the money she earned to pay for the small home she rented, and various gardening supplies which she uses to modestly decorate the home’s exterior. She had just moved into town after a year of vagabonding about, in search of a new place to put down roots.
Susan left her original home of Pont Jumeaux, Louisiana, following the disappearance and presumed death of her fiancé, Gilbert (pronounced Jill-bare) Pelletier, a badger.
Susan lead a surprisingly different life before her departure, having been the oldest daughter of a wealthy family, and being a prized Cajun Queen. Naturally, being the best of her sisters, she was arranged a marriage from age 12 with Gilbert, the first son of another wealthy family. Their love blossomed forth, and as they progressed through their teens they became infatuated with each other. Gilbert was a proud and caring individual, had a vast interest in the military, and planes particularly. Because of this he was placed in a military academy and learned everything about being an Air Force sergeant. Susan loved hearing his stories from the academy, and learning about what he did there. She even learned English from Gilbert, who picked it up before enrolling. When he wasn’t at the academy, Gilbert spent all his time with his future wife. They would spend whole days taking trips to beaches, parks, theaters and the like. But one of their most favorite activities was sitting on the widow’s walk of Susan’s mansion home and talking about the future, the stars gleaming in the southern night sky. At the age of 18, Gilbert was able to become a member of the U.S. Air Force. He regularly wrote letters to Susan, keeping her updated on everything he was doing and when he would be home next. Concern began to arise when he stopped writing however. After a month without response, what everyone had feared became reality. Gilbert was killed in an incident while doing a routine checkup on one of the planes when it became activate and the propeller spun quickly out of control, striking him in the head with enough force to put him in a comatose state for several weeks before his eventual death. The families receipt of this information was delayed for some unknown reason, but when Susan caught wind of it, she was panic stricken. She sequestered herself off in her room, surrounded with letters and photographs which had just been created a month before. People didn’t see her the same after hearing about Gilbert, as before they looked at her with envy, she was looked at in pity. For all Susan knew her life was over. Instead of giving up though, she went to start anew, searching for a new town to live and start over in, with the only indicator of her guilty leave-taking being a letter she left on her dresser. A year later in 1955, she settled on Povey, Indiana, after meeting a nice Robin named Rosa Lee, who sympathized with her rather than taking pity, and let her stay the night at her house. A strong friendship was formed, and from there Susan became confident again, and more outgoing. The tragedy she endured still deeply affected her, however, now she was able to look past it, and march forward to a better tomorrow. She was now determined she wouldn’t spend her days alone, and was set on finding someone to grow old with no matter what happened, or who got in the way; Even a certain greaser and her gang...
