The class was hard at work, each student at their PC working on their algorithms. A friendly, chill buzz of chatter settled in the background as Maria White walked from desk to desk, checking on her students.
The classroom door was shoved open and a couple more people hustled in and went straight to Maria as she hovered over one of the girls. They were out of breath, like they had been running for some time.
“There's a dragon flying over the university," said one of the newcomers urgently. “Another one! It's looping round. We were hoping you'd see what it wants."
“Me?" asked Maria. “Not the police?"
Well, I mean I could and probably should go and check it out, she thought. But I'm just a human teacher, doing human teacher things.
“The campus police got us to look for Lilac. So here we are."
They were both looking at her. Maria, flustered, looked down at herself just to check she wasn't a big lavender coloured dragon. Not currently.
“Could you fly up and see what he wants?"
“I-I don't know what you mean," she stammered
Ginny looked up from her computer.
“We all know, Maria," she said.
“I… what?" said Maria, stepping backwards. “I'm not Lilac!"
Her teeth had become pointed and carnivorous, something that happened from time to time. Since Lilac had appeared two months ago, Maria had grown several inches and looked more muscled and athletic. She now had different, less human mannerisms - they were more like Lilac's. She smelled differently - like Lilac.
One of the newcomer students blushed. “Sorry Lilac, I didn't know you were still trying to keep it a secret."
“No! I mean, I don't know what you're talking about!"
She looked around the room, at all the students who were now looking back at her.
Maria was a math teacher. Lilac was a strange little naked lizard the students found in a closet, who then had public sex with a wyvern. Lilac turned into a dragon, a friendly monster who the students adored, but who also now had two of them under her power as minions. Maria wasn't ready to be known of as Lilac.
But ready or not, here we are.
Hang on. Another dragon… is this my fault?
“Is the dragon charcoal grey?"
“Pretty much, yes."
“Oh," said Maria, with a slight fond smile.
“Didn't you say you were looking forward to meeting someone tonight?" asked Ginny with a grin.
“No! I mean yes!" responded Maria, flustered again.
“Oh that's so sweet!" gushed the girl at her computer.
“I, umm, sorry everyone, I have to duck out. Please keep working."
She paced to the door and left. Half the class followed her, the rest ran to the windows.
Maria strode through the campus courtyard. People were looking up nervously. She saw the distant dark grey dot in the sky, circling, moving at breathtaking speed.
“Do you think she'll poof transform, or American Werewolf transform?" Maria overheard one student saying to another.
She felt dozens of eyes upon her. Most of them looked relieved she was there. So most of them knew. Maria wondered if this is what super heroes feel like.
Onis, you big goof…
Deprived of anywhere private to change, Maria sighed, closed her eyes and suddenly grew. She erupted out of her clothes and stood at triple her height and several times her original size. Her skin turned lavender and segmented into scales. She barely swayed as her legs reshaped, her new talons dug into the soil and her reptilian tail sprouted from her rump.
“Err, Ginny, could you keep all my stuff safe?" asked Maria through a lengthening maw and sharpening teeth to the student, pointing a claw at her shredded clothes on the floor.
“Uhhh, sure!" replied Ginny with a squeak. Maria's transformation was a lot to take in, and it was weird to hear Lilac talking at all, let alone speaking with the voice of Maria. And she had never seen the creature so big before.
Maria's transformation finished in seconds and left her as a huge, alluringly shaped, reptilian giant. She beat her vast wings and lifted into the air, blushing at the applause she received.
Wow, thought Ginny.
Humans rightly feared the huge, mysterious region called the Migration. It appeared as a blur on cameras. It fooled any scientific readings. Any technology that went in disintegrated, so humans who intruded were essentially just apes armed with sticks. Sometimes the Migration spat out monsters, and sometimes those monsters were very unfriendly.
Today it had hit the jackpot of fear inspiration and produced a dragon. But now the university had one of its own, and people terrified that they would get eaten or transformed into horrible monsters, now hoped they'd see the two getting romantic in mid air.
Ginny grinned as she looked up and saw the people were going to get what they wanted.
