Having read the story - and incidentally, very impressive Lovecraftian prose and elaborately developed mythic sense of place, etc. - I think that you would probably very much enjoy a novel called "The Fisherman" by John Langan.

One reviewer delightfully described it as 'A river runs through it... and straight to hell.'
