Back in the "Renaissance" they did. Nowadays it's not an academically sound term, but mostly used to refer to the early middle ages, which did not have large, stone castles like in my drawing, but even then wasn't that bad, since the earl middle ages saw the development of the heavy plough, which could harvest from the heavy soils of northern Europe much better than Roman light ploughs and, combined with a global warming era at the time, making food grow more, the early middle ages was a time when the population and living standards of Europe saw a large upward growth. Other inventions of the era includes the horseshoe, liquid soap, central heating through underfloor channels, European production of silk, grindstones, universities, spread of watermills and the production of better steel, instead of the endless folding technique. There's more but all my books are in storage since I'm moving, and the period wasn't anywhere near as sophisticated as the later medieval period, but it laid the groundwork for modern western civilization.
