When Venghze first signed up for the armed forces he - like many other young men of his age - had grandeur dreams of honour and glory. He could see himself leading men in battle, inspiring morale and giving commands, charging in the frontline with a sword in his paw.
... basic training quickly bashed some cooling sense over his hot head and he quickly learned that he had to start at the very bottom and work his way up. But even then, he had at least hoped to stand in the vanguard in heavy armour, ready to do his duties. Now instead he found himself as an airforce wingman, helping ready up bombs for the mighty ferals to carry into battle. Every muscle in Ven's body tensed up as he heaved the next bomb up to arm it. But as he turned the handle on it, this one gave out a loud and worrying clonking sound. His proud whiskers drooped down and he swallowed hard.
"Please, don't explode just yet..." he whispered to it as pearls of sweat pushed up between his scales.
The mighty feral who was supposed to take it hesitated, looking at the spiked monsterball that Ven was holding, and then over at Ven with a "are you sure" glance.
"Wingman... are you sure this will work?"
Ven looked back up at him and gave an insecure shrug:
"I have no idea!"
The feral frowned and reluctantly let Ven strap the bomb to him, and Ven patted his flank as he turned to jump down.
They were all brethren now. Cogs in a machinery. But it wasn't fun anymore.
