Thanks! It's actually pretty simple once I figured it out. In Maya, every shader (which is what you use to apply textures to an object) has a variety of settings. I just made a transparent shader with the "glow" option turned on and fiddled with the color and brightness. It worked out a lot better than an older version where I rendered the textured character separately and tried to make him look transparent in Photoshop.
